Kasparov is too deep for Stockfish

Featured is the game between Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik from the 1994 Novgorod Tournament. Starting from a Sicilian Sveshnikov, the players eventually reach an opposite sides castles position, where Kasparov launches an attack on Kramnik's kingside. The winning tactical combination executed by Kasparov is particularly aesthetic, rendering Stockfish unable to fully appreciate its depth. The engine used to produce the graph at the end of the video is Stockfish 15.1.

hi Jerry. Great video! Always lovely to see some Kasparov swashbuckling. I have a content request. Yesterday you crushed me while streaming on twitch with the e6 Sicilian. I think the e6 Sicilian is really hard to play against for someone of my level (~1700 fide). Would you consider covering a game in this opening where you go over some of these lines? I always appreciate the little side lessons you sprinkle into your analysis videos, such as looking briefly at the 12...Bg5 line in this video.

Wesley So is like Bobby Fischer in a good way. Magnus is like Bobby Fischer in a bad way. SAYNOTO2900 GODBLESSAMERICA Bobby Fischer would agree with me. Bobby Fischer would agree with me. Bobby Fischer would agree with me. We both are mentally unwell (I have ADHD-PH), hate chess & have many friends in the Philippines. Eugene Torre accepted my friend request. Wesley So would be Bobby's favourite. 31-MtiHrehk 31-MtiHrehk 31-MtiHrehk Why are Magnus and Garry compared to Bobby Fischer? Can you be valedictorian if you cheated in school? - Garry Kasparov cheated Judit Polgar in the 1994 Linares. - Magnus Carlsen cheated Alireza Firouzja (2019 blitz WCC), Danya Naroditsky (2021 & 2022 lichess) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2021 WCC). Wesley So is like Bobby Fischer in a good way: W1 - Each 'is a prodigy, had a rather dark childhood and is American', but they have great moms. (This also applies Beth Harmon and Hans Niemann.) W2 - Betrayed by their home country, they got citizenship elsewhere. W3 - 1st American world champions: Bobby was 1st American-born WCC. Wesley So is 1st WC (and played for the US at the time but wasn't citizen until 1.5 years later). W4 - Unjustifiably lose their world titles 3 years after gaining them because FIDE was favouring a European over them. W5 - Hate chess and love 9LX. W6 - Have a lot of friends from the Philippines including Eugene Torre and Lotis Key. W7 - Met a corrupt president in the Philippines. Bobby met Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Wesley So met NCFP president Prospero Pichay Jr. W8 - Correctly accuse Tigran Petrosian of cheating. Magnus is like Bobby Fischer in a bad way: M1 - Ra()st against Americans & Jews (source: ZS4ZPF ) - M1.1 - (Bobby is kinda like Sergey Karjakin though: Has the 'right' to discriminate in the sense that they're born the nationality they're discriminating against. What's Magnus' 'right'? Magnus can discriminate only against Norwegians and maybe gentiles.) M2 - Likes 9LX but never really played it M3 - Is mentally unhealthy M4 - Unrelated: European citizens of Nordic countries. Beat a Russian in their last WCC which was controversial: Magnus cheated Nepo, and Bobby resigned a game. . . . P.S. Please help get Wesley So on Lex Fridman's podcast. Got curious so I checked with Nibbler on my laptop: Stockfish 15.1 evaluates Rd6 as '99.9% winning rate' instantly. Leela v0.29.0 (running on a pretty strong GPU) does have trouble with the position. It initially evaluates it as 50%, steadily rising to 90% after thinking for 90 seconds.

@@williammillar2892I agree. The OP’s analogy is too good. I’d like to use that analogy too. Garry, for me, is still the GOAT. These games were in the 90s. Explosive, yet so calculated. When he wins, he is significantly ahead of his opponent. Garry goes for the head. You only see these games on blitz and bullet nowadays, except that they’re intuitive, sceambled, and dubious. When he checkmates it’s like looking at the fireworks go still. When he goes for a winning endgame, you’re watching, you’re watching the falling debris of fireworks fall.

@moistnar

The default computer on Lichess only calculates lines to a fixed depth. At the point white plays Rd6, the engine needs to see not only to the restoration of the material, but then that the endgame is winning (which requires too much depth when it's that far away). Thus the engine just sees that it's an endgame with equal material and judges it to be ~equal--however, if it was given more time to calculate deeper, it would eventually come to the same conclusion that Kasparov did, that Rd6 is winning. Kasparov didn't need to calculate the endgame as intensely because as a human he could intuit that his pieces were better coordinated and positioned for the endgame, along with having a guaranteed free passer on the kingside
