Nepo was making the thing that all good players are doing to win any game - he created complications for his oponents, made them to have a complicated position with many bifurcations whereas he had a solid one. Its the thing that amateur players create with a gambit but Nepo didnt give up even 50 centipawns in position and still made something for the oponent to worry about :)

I have circa a thousand Elo points less than Alireza and I would _never_ play a single bullet or any game at all between two rounds, nor stream like Nakamura. And winning 2 candidates in a row, winning many of these rapid and blitz tournaments around, you can't do that on luck alone.

I hope Ian rethinks his mental before the WC this time (unless by some insane event Ian tilts, loses two straight, Hikaru wins two straight, and wins on tiebreaks). Ian on his A game is a beast, and we saw that quite a bit in the world championship, particularly in game 6 where he reached time control in a -1.something position iirc. I honestly do think that he poses the largest threat to Carlsen if he finds form during the WC, granted undoubtedly Magnus is still the best in the world by a large margin, and the odds are VERY VERY much in his favor.
@agsystems8220
@agsystems8220 Жыл бұрын
It is his fitness he really needs to work on I think. I don't think he tilted as much as got exhausted and was in a position where he needed to take risks. When you hear about Magnus spending his rest days playing football it is easy to think he is not taking things seriously, but in a match as brutal as that last world championship physical fitness does come into it, and I think it was the difference maker.

What sets magnus apart is the way he wins. Even when magnus wants to win, he won't be overzealous and attempt to do what Alireza and Rapport did against Nepo. Magnus will play good chess, until he gets a small advantage, and then grind it out. You don't have to make mistakes to lose to magnus. @@shakezpere "right now the priorities of his life maybe different when he was young" - he's 31, come on. that's the same age as Karpov in 1982, for example. "And he already get 5 times World Champion" - two of these titles were decided on rapid tiebreaks, with a mere 1 win and 1 loss in the classical part : ) (Karjakin + Caruana, since the Caruana one was nothng but draws). for comparison, Kasparov's 1985 WC match consisted of 24 games (twice as long as the 12 games format used in all but the last of Carlsen's matches), and he won 5 games in that match alone. modern format is not Carlsen's fault - sure - but it's a fact nevertheless, and has an impact on the weight of these victories. they're not of the same proportion. of course i'm just some dude on the internet, but Karpov is of similar opinion: ""one clear win and already tired of winning?" what Carlsen is fighting for right now is not another WC title, but his place in chess history. his claim to the GOAT status. when current century is over, will he be remembered as one of the best players of the century? will he go down in history as Kasparov or Fischer of the 21st century? or "only" as Botvinnik of the 21st century (with all due respect to Botvinnik, who also had 5 WC wins, and who's certainly remembered, but let's face it, not a legend of the same dimension), overshadowed by other players that are still to come and aren't born yet. i believe he's capable of the former - there's a chance that the "top 3" lists of people in year 2100 will commonly include "[Someone from, say, 2062], Carlsen, Kasparov". but in order for this to happen, he would have to reign longer still, and demonstrate he can also beat the next up and coming generation before his retirement

They should go back to having candidate matches as that helps the Challenger get used to playing in a match prior to taking on the champion winning a tournament is not the same as winning a match

Nepo has great winning chances and should be considered a favorite in a rematch vs Carlsen. He demolished 7 super-grandmasters in the candidates and is mentally prepared to take it against the world champion. The first match with Carlsen a year ago was very close until a demanding game 6, the longest in the chess world championship history. After that Nepo tried to retaliate but rushed and lost again, and the remaining games played half-strength.

Nepo hasn't lost a game this tournament so there's no good way to judge how he would take a loss in the WC. It's very hard to change your mindset about that type of thing in less than a year. Not saying it's impossible, he may surprise us all, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I hope for a great match regardless
