I don't know whether to give this a thumbs up, for Higaonna Sensei, or a thumbs down, for the music that is drowning out the breathing of this great master's Kata...

Fortunately my first watch was on mute. How do I say this.... among all the Tensho videos I've seen, Sensei Morio's is the most "muscularly tense" I've ever seen, with constant and intense torso and limb pressure all throughout. He's a moving rock.

Kata Tensho is my favourite one, and I fidn the presentation of Grandmaster Morio Higaona as a refresh and more practical form of Kata. Thanks God, The master is OK, and may he live as long as possible. Paul, 68, retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate. Paul, 68

The roughly 19 people that gave this a thumbs down are not martial artists in my opinion. They have no respect for anything.. if you cannot accept the way another person does a Kata, then you are a person that should not train in Martial Arts of any kind!

Don't you have better things to do than counting thumbs down? We do have respect for videos well done, rather than ones spoiled by pointless background music. Something I don't respect though, is your opinion about who's a martial artist and who's not. You can shove this opinion of yours where the sun don't shine, granddad.

I remember when I was 17 years old. I was on a Kata Competition representing U.S.A.G.A. The Karate tournament was organized by the Shoto Kan Group... The first and second place on the Kata Competition were Shoto Kan students, also most of the judges. I was even on the third place with another Shoto Kan student. The judges never counted the clear points I made on the kumite that I had with another Shoto Kan, so he won(Yep, sure!🖕🖕🖕). But when they discovered that I was even on the third place in Kata's with another of the Shoto Kan student, they decided to do another match, obviously to eliminate me. The other guy repeated the very same kata that he did before. I did Taikyoku Empi Go as I was the only Goyu Ryu student of the division. But this time, on the second match, I asked for permission to change to 'Tensho Kata'... Everybody on the Sport Arena remained silenced staring at me while I was almost passing out for my tensed breathing out in effort to impress the judges and the audience. In just two minutes, I ended up breathing heavily with an accelerated heartbeat. My face was so red, my veins bumped and I was sweating like if I just get out of the shower. The audience started to clap and scream. Guess who got the trophy...! 💪💪💪 Then one of the judges, a female sensei who wasn't Shoto Kan came to congratulate me while saying: "If you have decided to do this Kata before, you might get the first place". The Goyu Ryu Grand Master and others Sensei were upset with the tournament organizers, but proud of me. That happened more than 30 years ago in Puerto Rico.

i thought Tensho(internal )Softwas the counter kata to Sanchin(external)Hard..... wheres the hard soft in Gojuryu if all the katas are hard which katas are soft katas in Gokuruu? thnx
@lightshadown
@lightshadown 6 жыл бұрын
i think the Ju (soft) part its more like, letting go all the tension on your body without softening your self, heres an example: when you kick, your leg has to be soft in order to move, but your tendons are in tension, and the more tension they have the faster you can move, BUT your muscles are completly soft (relax), thats why taichi or judo can move lighthing fast and have relative weak brute force, but high impact.

In Goju ryu karate do (IOGKF) Tensho and Sanchin are both Heishu kata (with the tanden closed). The other kata (Gekisai Dai Ichi and Ni, Saifa, Seiyunchin, Shisochin, Sanseru, Sepai, Kururunfa, Sesan and Suparinpei) are Kaishu kata (with the tanden open and closed).

I think the distinction is also about linear and circular. The hard ones teach linear movement (mostly for striking), while the soft ones focus on circular (for use in deflecting, grabbing a wrist, etc.)
@emory0
@emory0 Жыл бұрын
This IS "soft" in Goju. Hard usually has closed fists and fast, strength-based movements.

Since Qi Gong is really only mindful breath control, focusing mind through focused movements, then it is an adjunct principle of any and all martial arts forms--such as balance, control, awareness, centers of motion, center of gravity, structure, stability through mobility, rooting, etc...

- Improve your body condition - Improve your focus - Increase the volume capacity of your lungs - Oxygenate your blood stream - Oxygenate your muscles - Oxygenate your organs - Oxygenate your brain - Build strength - Build resistance - Toughen your core area ...and so on. To properly perform all these sequence of movements and rhythmical breathing you need years of practice and if you do this every morning (once or twice) you would understand what is the (magical) purpose of doing this. Stay well, 👊
@patricm.3718

Conditioning principles of rooting, connecting movements to base, and exceptional technical structure into your training. I challenge you to learn this form and practice it every morning for three months, and track the changes in your life. I'm serious. Try it. Keep a journal if you can get into that. See what happens.

To waste time in the name of doing martial art. Original white crane forms were supposed to be both hard and soft. Some karate styles in order to market themselves as macho styles have developed instructors with pumped up muscles just to attract students. Now this has become the norm.

@@patricm.3718 I'm getting back into karate and into shape after a 15 year hiatus. Performing Sanchin and Tensho at least once a day has been more beneficial to my return to form than I think everything else combined. I didn't appreciate these katas as a kid because they're not flashy, but my god are they an effective training tool.
@patricm.3718
@patricm.3718 2 жыл бұрын
@@notjux I recommend that you practice O Naihanshi, Enpi (make sure to do it on the other side as well), the Pinan Katas and Chum Kiu in addition to Tensho and Sanchin that you're already doing. So much of the core principles of Muay Thai, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Silat (and knife-fighting itself) are seeded into those forms. There's really no end to the study if you know what to look for, and treat the forms as compendiums in their own right, rather than as performance pieces. Just think of how many centuries of brilliant and pragmatic warriors' lifetimes' worth of insights are condensed into those movements. The forms themselves become teachers and tuners, if you keep them alive and moving in you.
