I've heard Katahdin Barbados blackbelly cross are the perfect homestead sheep? I don't know, but I'm gonna find out. I'm definitely with you on the goats! I do like the Oberhasli milk, but I've also been told the crossed sheep milk is great? Never had sheep milk?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm considering getting 3 Katahdin wethers on 5 acres of steep land in Colorado covered with grass, weeds, and pine trees and pine needles. I want to build a mobile sheep tractor on wheels and move it each day. I need to learn how to protect them in the winter (how to make a mobile shelter that is not too heavy and will not fall down the hill). If I have 3 wethers, if I made the sheep tractor 8x16 feet will that be big enough? Anything bigger than that will be too heavy; that might even be too heavy. Also I wonder for this purpose if I got rescue sheep if that would work? Also need to protect them from coyotes and maybe foxes.

Can you do a video how you secured that field fencing onto your metal gates? I need a how to video. I used some chain link ties to attach some goat and sheep wire and it just looks absolutely terrible. Yours looks a lot tidier.

Can you milk the Katahdin ewes ?

I know you said they eat weeds, which mine love ragweed and goldenrod, but what grass varieties do you have in your pastures??? Did I see Bermuda or was that crab grass seed heads? Mine won’t touch Bermuda or Bahia.

Yeah, goats are tough. There's gotta be food and there's gotta be entertainment. We ended up putting like this fake hill gym thing in the middle of the pen put it on wheels, also gives some shade when we put the shade silts out with cloth over head in the middle of summer. Grazing them in silvo/developing silvo/overgrown woods. Also, takes years of breeding and selection to get a good group going. Simply getting rid of the problems even if it's breeding is good. Them seeing one do it causes the others to wonder. Same for poor cows who like to wander. No entertainment the busy mind of a goat is the worst. But also the best because in those brush areas they work so hard when busy. Also, you can setup ladders in the brush areas and they will climb those ladders for the brush. Again, training and time. A good herd of goats is the work of a lifetime and the fool always breaks up a solid well train herd when you die LOL. It's the problem with farming right now and grass finish. It's a work of a lifetime to get breeding and training. Then someone else comes along and doesn't realize the gold mine their looking at. We have these goat burgers that are really popular. Goat bacon that we sell on top of beef burgers for our football, baseball, basketball games. we also do a mutton/goat bacon breakfast taco we do as well at the market. mostly mutton on it though and breakfast burrito. If you are low on labor though I'd not f with goats. It takes some labor and some though for goats. They are so tough but the market for goats halal is huge. legit, sold out once the ball rolls down hill on it. it's very big for ethinic weddings as well if you can get a line on it.
