Not to mention that The King in Touch My Katamari looks absolutely fucking cursed.

One thing I love about katamari's art style is that you literally cannot tell footage of a handheld game apart from footage of an HD console game

Seeing how a simple PS2 game could be recycled again and again without much evolution changes a lot of the perspective of of what it means for a series to be "milked." Persona similarly had a (relatively) cheap, new entry with Persona 3, and while the series has had this success capitalized on, it only got 3 "mainline" entries over the course of about decade. It has spin offs and adaptations, but at least they go out to entirely different genres and provide a unique perspective of the source material. Katamari feels like it was viewed from a "if it's broke don't fix it" even though the attempts to replicate it didn't hit the mark and there was room for improvement upon what was laid down.

So it’s up to you, The Prince, to make a katamari that you can turn into planets, stars, quasars, nebulas, and galaxies to make your universe the best it can be!

20:26 The game actually only lets you roll up the sun after clearing at least one mode of every stage (so you do have to do School ALAP abut not School AFAP, for example). Even if you clear every mode of almost every stage but don't play Cowbear, the game isn't gonna let you roll it up.

I do respect your opinion on Beautiful Katamari but I thought the game was actually pretty good despite the DLC. A lot of the levels in this game are really well-designed. The soundtrack is really good in this game. And I know it does play like the other katamari games but it is kind of hard to make new ones with new gimmicks and trying to keep it where it still.feels like Katamari

Say what you will about Beautiful Katamari, but I absolutely LOVE that in the final stage, you can seamlessly roll all the way into space after rolling up all the continents. That was my favourite part of the game and I think any future Katamari game should have that! The worst thing Beautiful Katamari does is failing to give the Cowbear level an Eternal mode, where you're able to roll up as many cows and bears as you want.

This is a great video! The amount of effort that I know went into this is so impressive. I've only played the first Katamari because of Reroll, so I'm really excited for We Love Katamari's remaster. Not 100% sure if I want to play the other games, but rolling up entire continents and planets does look amazing.

even if i'm months late, watching someone talk about katamari is always a treat. i played damacy ages ago and have a few fuzzy memories of forever, but i finally picked up we love reroll while it was on sale the other day. never would've guessed such an amazing sequel was only made because the other option was a christmas themed reskin. great video!

To be honest the only complaint I have of the reroll/remakes is the design changes on the faces. I loved the seed like eyes and angular mouths of the cousins much more.

My idea for a Katamari sequel: "Katamari of The Stars", take the stretching gimmick from Touch My Katamari and apply it to the analog sticks. While pushing forward, angle the sticks slightly toward each other to get tall, skinny, and fast, do the opposite to get wide, flat, and slow, both have their advantages, and the stretching and squashing is gradual, you can mediate toward each end point as incrementally as you want, completely seamlessly. Jumping is back too, and to add to that, stretching now affects how you fall, going skinny makes you jump REALLY high and fall REALLY fast, piercing through the air all aerodynamic and stuff, while going flat makes you _glide_ through the air, like all the glider items from the Zelda series. Level design accounts for this by having some traditional home grown platforming to get to different areas, a good number of birds and balloons also float along the air above now too. The Prince has become the new king, all the cousins are grown up too, and they give you the levels, giving you different tasks and stuff, Nik wanting you to get food, Foomin wanting twins, etc, you could get real creative here, and they would have multiple levels each too. You play as the new Prince, and your father gives you the traditional get BIG levels. The main narrative goal is to prepare for Grandpap's birthday, IE the king we're familiar with from the old games, so all that food you get for Nik goes toward making some Cosmic Cuisine made out of food stars and planets. End game twist: real fucking sad. Turns out it's actually all for Grandpap's funeral, The Prince and his generation of cousins were kept in the dark, final level is a sendoff to the old king, as a sort of viking funeral where he gets rolled up to be turned into a brilliant burning star, something foreshadowed by the fact that a star for Papa is already present in the cosmos viewer. The final level features a combination of Lonely Rolling Star and Katamari of Love as the final song, when you finish and send the katamari up into the sky (this time on your own, your dad and the adult cousins don't throw it up for you like with the others) it's named: LONELY ROLLING STAR.

very nice video!!! ive been trying to learn about the katamari series and all of its lore and this video surprisingly gave me some insight, and even though ive done some research myself i had no idea about kings pretty unfortunate backstory :( i know the lore isnt really the main focus of the video and im just a nerd when it comes to that type of stuff, but nonetheless this seems like a video you worked hard on, so kudos to you!! i hope this video gets a lot more recognition ^_^ (its 4 AM writing this i should really get some sleep)

I really love this video! im actually surprised this hasnt gotten more attention. before, i just kinda brushed off the sequels past we love and just didnt consider them at ALL but hearing what you said about katamari forever makes me sad that it couldve been even better. even though i still consider them all cashgrabs, i was glad to hear about katamari forever's attempt at uniqueness. it made me feel a little better, and made me want to atleast look into it a bit further. that feels like something mediocre, but i guess that meant enough to me that i wanted to say thank you for doing that, for making me want to check it out. the video in general was also entertaining, its the first video of yours ive seen and i think its great! i can tell you had fun making it, so i hope you have fun making more. 👍

I have been a huge fan of this game series ever since I was a toddler and I am currently in my early 20s. Yet I still had never heard of Namco's plan to release an Xmas version of the first game. Interestingly there is an unfinished early version of the snowman level from WLK in the game's files so I feel like that could have influenced them to do that

My first game of this series was We love Katamari, and, I loved it. It's one of the greatest games that I have ever played, and every now and then, I replay it just for the joy of it. A decade later, I played the original katamari, and it is nice, but i still think we love katamari is better. I never played the other ones, and I don't plan to hahaha.

Funnily enough, the psp does actually have an official av adapter and you can get adapters for it to hdmi that you can wire into a capcard. It’s too much work when it’s the easiest console to emulate, but it is actually an option.

A shame you missed out on Touch My Katamari's DLC, to be honest it's the only thing I really care about in it. There's some cool ideas there! And sorry about the We Love Katamari remake's additional levels... Disappointment incarnite. Eitherway it was nice seeing a video analyze the series and its unfortunate downfall. To be honest I don't really want a return for the series. I enjoy Beautiful and Forever but I feel like if the series ended after We Love it coulda gone down as a legendary gamer duology.

I think Me & My Katamari DESPERATELY needs a Reroll. I love the stages, I love the characters, I love everything about it. It's just the controls that hold it back from greatness. If you're interested in playing the game similar to how you would in Katamari Damacy or the later entries, run it in PPSSPP, and follow these instructions: Go into the control settings, bind the d-pad to the d-pad itself and the left stick. Then do the same for the face buttons. It sucks that you have to jump through hoops to play a katamari game LIKE a katamari game, but hopefully the success of the Reroll games will inspire them to remake it.

I'm not really sure what you mean about the whole gimmick stage VS size stage thing. Like... why can't they coexist? I don't think any Katamari game needs to focus more on one than the other. I like playing a size stage one minute and a gimmick stage the next. I think they complement each other.

Me And My Katamari should never have been made. They should have done the DS game they were planning. How much more fun would have that been? Seriously, it's a game that makes more sense with touch control! "Oh but the DS isn't as powerful as the PSP" who gives a fart, it doesn't have to look pretty, it just has to be fun to play. I was a big fan of Beautiful Katamari, and it would be the only reason for me to get an Xbox 360. I know it's short and Katamari Forever has "all the levels" but I like it as it is. I even paid for the DLC even though I was only using the 360 at my old office.

I bought the OG iOS game and bought all of the dlc and then it got delisted. I’m still pissy about it lol it wasn’t the best game but for a mobile game it was wayyyy ahead of its time. It’s not like it was live service so why they pulled it idk.. prolly so people would be more apt to get the auto rolling one..

NGL- just came to check to hear the “Beautiful Katamari is the same shit & boring” speech again (since I’m just a masochist for liking BK IG /lh) but I’m glad someone addressed the Framrate issues. I noticed they’re arguably worse on the Xbox One- as I have a physical disc I played on my 360 time and time again to only slight frame drops when hitting a target size, and then never again for the rest of the level. But on next Gen it just seemed to have a lag spike or jitter every few so seconds, sometimes from getting bigger, sometimes for a reason I don’t even know. It could be because my Xbox One is older, but it baffles me how it runs worse on somehow “stronger” hardware (I am no engineer idk how they really differ in their specific ways). I’m not one to talk abt framerate really though since it never was a huge issue to me. Just have no clue why it somehow suddenly became laggy when playing it on the next Gen. We’ll be watching the video, I’ll be enjoying the rest of it over breakfast and wanting to see your takes on the other games. Edit: The quality and clear love of the series in this is insane. Genuinely adored all the work you poured into everything. As always. I still respect the opinion of “Katamari games feeling the same after a while” but to me it just goes to show how simple and enjoyable of a gameplay loop it is. To me there was enough to spice it up with the balancing act of “regular” sizing stages and the other minigame like stages reminding me much of PVZ. I got to play Forever at a friend’s eons ago and the Drive Stages legit should just be a staple, memorizing map and item locations is like one of my favorite parts of Katamari and having it as an excuse to admire the visual work and music as it culminates into what is essentially a playable musical or art project, the same reason I love the SC5 games or Rain On Your Parade so much (and Lumines as it basically is just that). But being used to a lot of series I like “trying something new” and missing very hard with it, even if they had fun ideas having it not work in execution (COUGHS. IM A SONIC FAN BTW). Knowing that even though BK was my introduction to the series, knowing I could play almost any game in the series and receive the same or just similar enough experience: The comforting yet stressful, the absurd yet just so contagiously bursting with personality you can’t knock it down for being so “different.” Because there is no other game like Katamari. The satisfaction from beating a level I struggled with then and getting insanely high scores for now. Memorizing the maps, item locations, points in the level-specific song to remind me to check my size and see if I’m at a good enough target to make that high score. And getting a high score so I can unwind in Eternal, basking in an achievement- though mild, was so incredible to me. Knowing I could go back to older titles and get that kind of experience? It’s like coming home to something familiar and warm. Something that even when you leave, they’ll always be waiting there. That’s what Katamari’s consistency is to me. Jumping to learn Forever from BK and trying We Love at a cousins’s place? It still always clicked. It never changed much. While playing it safe is detrimental in the long run for many games, Katamari never was for me. It was constant. Just something fun I can get back to at any point no matter what changes. I don’t think anyone else shares that sediment though. But I just wanted to give my word on it. Thanks for crafting such an enjoyable experience to watch, I love it when people are this joyful and passionate about something they hold close to them- both what they like and dislike. (Although. Deadass. PS Controllers suck the hell do you mean by ‘L1/L2’ those little shits are the left trigger and left bumper. /lh and joking)
