Ryan loves his katana 50, but does he love it more with a different speaker? In this video the stock katana speaker is compared to the Celestion Blue and Celestion greenback on the clean, crunch and brown channels.

That Blue has some character but a $300 speaker in a $200 amp is something I can't justify in this lifetime.

I've never understood this way of thinking. If someone likes an amp and is mostly satisfied with it but wants to upgrade it to get it even better,...what difference does it genuinely and tangibly make how much the amp cost you ? Isn't the end result all that matters ? Isn't it actually better if you dont have a lot of money invested in something that you are finding the need to upgrade and sink even more money in it ?

@@joelmiddaugh8229 I understand. And my point is that you would come much nearer to affording an expensive speaker in an inexpensive but good amp. But your comment expressed the idea that a 300 dollar speaker in a 200 dollar amp isn't "justified" So you are clearly of the idea that there is something wrong with putting an expensive (good) speaker in an inexpensive (good) amp. If your finances that you've shifted towards were your meaning, you would have simply said that I can't afford or justify spending 300 dollars on a speaker. An inexpensive amp is more likely to benefit with such an upgrade than an expensive amp and you are more likely to be able to justify and afford it after not having spent 700 - 1,500 dollars on the amp.

@@stricknine8623 I'm certainly not against speaker upgrades, I have a Celestion g10 in my Fender Mustang 1. The 8" speaker in there just couldnt handle the bass. I'm not sure I would ever go with an alnico speaker just because of the cost and because so many good recordings have been made without them. Doesnt seem neccessary, but I am always curious about the differences between alnico and ceramic, solid state vs tube, etc. Its just so much cheaper to tweak your guitar than your amp sometimes, and easier to predict the results. I know how to make a guitar better, I really dont know what I'm doing with amps so much. One of the best things I have ever done to improve tone is simply maintain my frets, for example. That's done more than anything for playing enjoyment, having a buzz free guitar.

Absolutely. I love greenbacks with just about every tube amp. But I must say that the Katana is a solid state amp, and it’s speaker was custom designed for it. I don’t think it takes to other traditional guitar speakers as well as it’s own.

I'm no expert, but each speaker are in a different cab, and I was under the impression that the actual cab construction is an important factor in how the speakers will respond. I think that the result of your tests would be different if all 3 speakers were installed in the same cab. I’m also curious about the two other cab that you are using, are they open back or closed back? Thank you for the info.
@kites4121
@kites4121 Жыл бұрын
Open vs closed back is a huge difference. Otherwise, the baffle size size difference between two guitar cabinets is going to make a negligible difference. In an open baffle speaker cabinet, the size of the baffle determine the frequency at which the sound is able to defract around the cabinet. Below that frequency, the cabinet will have no bass response. I’m not sure what the slope of the bass roll off is. Maybe someone else can say if it 6db/oct, 12db/oct, or higher. I forget the fraction of the wavelength at which the sound will begin to bend around the baffle. An open back guitar cab with a huge baffle will have more bass, but the size differences between the cabs he is using is relatively small and not likely to make a DISCERNIBLE difference. I think the bass roll off of open back cabs are a big advantage. IMO that leaves more room for the bass player. I can’t stand closed back cabinets but that’s just my subjective opinion. They sound fine mic’s but I’m not a fan of the dispersion characters in the kind of clubs that I play. Peace.

The Blue convinced me to try an alnico speaker in my Katana. I went with the Avatar Hellatone A50 Alnico and could not be happier. It is a great fairly flat EQ speaker that I find is better than the Blue or Gold which have an overly bright upper mid that gets a bit annoying over time. The Hellatone A50 (alnico) and the C50 (ceramic) don't have any annoying high-end spikes or weird mids. A great speaker for the Katana and less expensive than the Blue or Gold. The Hellatone 50 ceramics are great in the Katana as well but the alnico gives more "air" and shimmer that I feel the Katana needs. The Katana can be very one-dimensional and the alnico gives some 3D swirl that keeps me interested. You can hear it in the demo of the Blue. Both Hellatones are very much full range with the ceramic having a bit more bottom and attack over the alnico. This was an outstanding demo of what the Katana can be with a great alnico speaker to give it some real character.

Just traded for a Katana 50 yesterday. Played my three guitars thru it with the panel controls and was pleased. Today I've played my new pickup's Squire...my jamming partner know's what I like and is in the pickup industry, and I've played it on and off all day. Still with just the panel setting's and some reverb. Switching Amp's and maybe touching the drive but I am blown away. I envision great knowledge and advancement with this amp. As to the video we're watching. After watching this video and having had the amp only one day....I will say I will utilize some other speaker's I have stored. I do really like the brightness of the stock speaker but then again it's not broken in. Great comparison video and keep up the great job.

Hi Ryan, thank you for the video, I´ve been thinking about a speaker swap for my Katana 50, maybe with a Eminence GB128 (Greenback style). I have a suggestion for your videos...you always talk about so different is the recorded audio compare to sound of the amps in the room. It´s maybe because of the different mic placement. In this case, the Katana 50 has the speaker placed way to the front left (it´s not centered like most amps), so you are micing it on the edge of the speaker, that´s make it warmer than really is in the room. Then, the mic placement of the custom cab is on the center, which gives to the recording more treble and high-mids and less low end. Thank you! We love your channel, cheers from Spain.

I just thought the blue was a little punchier asside from the fuller volume. Even with the stock speaker in a bigger and simply different cab it would sound --> different. That's how it works. Steve, no one is "using a calibrated torque wrench". There're just methods, that make a neutral comprison possible. That's not how it's done.

Thanks for the effort it takes to do these - the instant switching is one key factor in determining speakers differences, but can be dangerous to your amp. Was this the start of how you later accidentally fried the Katana? The Blue is more articulate. It had better be since it costs more than the amp. I usually like Greenbacks but in this case I'd prefer the stock speaker. This is also the exact reason I have more amp heads than combos - cabinet and speaker variety.

You've got to consider speaker impedance and efficiency. The stock speaker in the K50 is 8 Ohms, so the amp only sent ~25 watts to your 16 Ohm Greenback. It seemed about as loud, suggesting the Celestion is more efficient. If the Blue is 8 ohm, it would partially explain the volume difference.

As a fan of the greenback I must say I'm a bit surprised. I felt that the stock Katana speaker blew the Celestion out of the water in every tonal aspect and channel setting. The greenback sounded flubby, inarticulate, and muddy to me. The Katana sounded more sparkly and crisp. It would have been interesting though to hear what the different speakers sounded like through some good humbuckers. I have a feeling that would have increased the overall sound quality with the Celestion, don't ask me why but...

Good vid. I would like to hear humbuckers as well, especially on the crunch and brown channels. Also, it would be cool to hear some effects added such as reverb and maybe delay just to hear what effects they would have. I am pleasantly surprised by the katana though. I'm like you and considering the amp has so many options I am sure you could eq or use effects to get the tone you want with each channel. That Katana speaker like you said is probably built to sound as neutral as possible considering it is supposed to do all things for all people in all genre's of music being played thru it. What a great amp. Tube amps will die out soon. In the next 20 years they will be the minority I think because of solid state amps like the katana and because of digital multi effects like the Helix, etc where one can just play directly thru the FOH or PA..

It only makes sense that the Katana speaker wins - Boss does a LOT of research before they release products (hence the long reputation for quality). They no doubt did a crazy amount of speaker experimentation before putting out the combo. The WAZA speaker they developed sounds amazing in the Katana Artist version. They considered all the speaker design elements and tweaked all of them based on the amp characteristics. I think the Katana's are one of the few combo's out there that you don't need to waste time and money with speaker swaps. Unless you just can't leave anything alone....haha.

Eminence Swamp tHnag in the katana , I did it,. played several gigs with it, I had just as much full bassy tone as the other guitar player, when I walked out front in the middle.............. we sounded equal. ...Granted he probably didnt have his lows pumped up, maybe at 5 while mine was probably 8 or so with mids down 3-4 But we sounded almost the same & My katana didnt lose its lowend even at gig cvolume.

I have a BOSS Katana 50 MK1, can I use a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker at 8 ohms?

Boss didn't pull a random speaker off the shelf for the Katana, they designed it from scratch to complement all of the amps voicings. I'd keep it stock.

My vote goes to the Katana speaker, it seemed better all around from clean to lead channels. Putting a Green back in a Katana is like putting $4k worth or rims on a $500 beater...lol

The stock speaker is a good general purpose speaker. The blueback is dearer than the whole amp so not an economically viable upgrade. Personally I liked the greenback the best, it is a lot less expensive as an upgrade but I really don't think the difference is worth the outlay. I'm a huge vox fan and love my AC15 but I have a katana as well for convenience, no dragging pedals out for a quick 15 minute noodle, easy to move to another room if I need to. - every guitarist should have one and they neither need or are worth "upgrading".

Eminence has a hemp cone speaker called the "Guit-Fiddle" of all things... 8 ohm 100 watt rated... it was designed to cut down the highs a bit starting at 4k and is pretty balanced from 80hz to the 4K... it's job is to cut out the harsh bow sound of the violin.. they say it can be a solid guitar speaker if you need to smooth out your sound... what the hell.. ebay here I come!lol... it's only money and a few minutes of my time to swap it out :)

Ryan,the katana 50 is perfect. The 100 watt. Is too much. To loud. The 50 is perfect. I agree the stock speaker is perfect.

Both the blue and green has fuller sound. I prefer the Green. What's the wattage rating on the Greenback. I would like to install a green or blue in my Katana.

To be fair, an accurate comparison would have the speakers swapped in the combo itself...using its' cab. We are hearing what the Celestions sound like in other cabs (".)

Is there any chance the DSP in the katana compensates for it's own stock speakers to make them "neutral" ? then when its plugged into another speaker the compensation introduces some oddness?

Well, I prefer the Katana's stock speaker. Specially in Brown channel. It's way better then the others using this channel.

At the price level of the Katana I doubt it. Boss using their own propitiatory speakers is a cost cutting measure. note: I own a Kat100 and a Nextone Stage so I am hardly a Boss basher.. As it stands right now I intend to put a ScumBack M75 in my Nextone soon. I play the nextone all the time now over the Kat.

Ryan is exactly correct.. Sound is a subjective thing. One person's unicorn sound is anothers trash.. IMO the Katana is much too middie.. gives it a nasal sound which I don't care for. I like a little scoop which both the Celestions have , more so with the GreenBack. There's a reason why the GB has so many credits in it's history.. GreenBack for me..

The conclusion is weird. As you can read into the comments, most people prefer the stock speaker. However, other KZfaqrs had shown the Katana Artist is the same thing but with better speakers. To conclude: Artist speaker > Katana speaker > Celestion???
