This sword is attributed to Masamune, a master swordsmith toward the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), regarded as the completion of the Soshu tradition. Features of Masamune’s craft can be seen on the blade and flat area of the present sword. This prized sword was once owned by Emperor Komei, the father of Emperor Meiji. Masamune was born in Kamakura in 1263 as the son of the master swordsmith Tosaburo. In his career he perfected the Soshu tradition. In the sphere of Japanese swords, he is revered as the master who put new life to the Japanese tradition of sword making. You can appreciate the beauty of the martensite crystals of the Soshu tradition on the accompanying KZfaq video.
