She actually recorded her vocal as she floated in the water. Amazing! The Hounds of Love is a masterpiece and you should really listien to rest of the suite of which this is the first track. The whole thing is amazing. Was so lucky to get a ticket to see her live in 2014 and her voice was stunning.

It was recorded to be played live in her 2014 concert in a segment of 'The Ninth Wave'. The Ninth wave is the second part of her Hounds of Love album. It's a concept piece about a woman lost at sea and the various psychological states she encounters. You should react to the whole of the Ninth Wave...it's a masterpiece! During the live show this part was meant to represent the woman in the here and now and what was happening on stage her subconscious.

I always heard the lyric as Buoy not Boy. I imagined that the racing of white horses was the racing white of the crashing waves. That way, if she was racing along with the waves, she couldn’t be mistaken as an anchored buoy 🤔

I listen this song and album nith wave over and over again in a time I was very sick, my grandmother died and I was in deep depression . No album and song could better express how I felt at this time. Even this was almost 30 years ago - hearing this, brings me back to this time with a fingersnip

Ok, you're spot on about how terrifying it would be to be alone adrift at night trying to keep awake because you know if you fall asleep, you will very likely roll over and drown. This was the initial idea that led to a linked suite of songs on the 2nd side of Kate's iconic "Hounds Of Love" collectively titled "The Ninth Wave" and "And Dream Of Sheep" is the 1st track of the suite. The ninth wave is a concept piece, whereas the 1st side of the album contains more commercial tracks such as "Running Up That Hill" and others. The "Hounds Of Love" album is the perfect blend of the commercial (1st side), and the more experimental "The Ninth Wave" concept piece. As for this video, Kate made an announcement that she would be performing live in 2014, a concert residency which ultimately consisted of 22 dates called "Before The Dawn." NOTE: When the tickets eventually went on sale, they sold out in under 15 minutes. The concert was broken into a nunber of acts. One was devoted to some of her popular songs, but the concert also included live performances of two concept pieces - one was the 2nd of her double album Aerial called a "Sky Of Honey" and other was a live performance of "The Ninth Wave", which started with this video being projected on a large screen above the stage. Kate did end up suffering for her art, having to float in a large tank of ice cold water for a considerable amount of time, which resulted in Kate ending up with a mild case of hypothermia. As for concerts, people travelled from all over the world to see Kate perform live on stage, many world famous pop stars were also in attendance to see not just a concert but a ground breaking experience unlike any concert before. In the same way that Kate had redefined what a pop concert was, with her 1979 "Tour Of Life" concerts and her use of a headset mic, Kate did it again with the "Before The Dawn" concerts. I can confirm that people did indeed travel from all over the place to see Kate, because I talked to a few of them, while I was queuing up to go into one of the concerts. 😀

Hi and thanks for this. "And Dream Of Sheep" is one of the Kate Bush songs that I especially love; it is so delicate and her voice is just perfect for it. It is of course the doorway to 'The Ninth Wave' which is a 26 1/2 minute long concept piece or cycle or suite of 7 songs that all unite to tell the story of a woman lost at sea and how battle to stay awake and stay alive as she waits and hopes for rescue. The songs tell of her hallucinations and nightmares: - she imagines herself talking with her future self, being a woman at a witch trial, buried under the water, floating above the earth and looking down at it, being a ghost haunting her own house and family but being unable to contact them. In doing so she draws upon old witch trials, the poetry of Lord Tennyson, the 'Wizard of Oz,' 'Nosferatu the Vampire,' ancient British/Celtic myths etc. It has often been considered by other recording artists and music journalists as being among the most perfect recordings in the whole Rock/Pop genre. And it is truly outstanding. A few people doing reaction videos have managed to react to the entire piece without it being blocked, and it really is a ride. Thanks again.

So you must be a fan by now.... Just so you know... You really miss out by not doing the entire suite. She set the album up as one side pop and the other as a suite for a reason. It's a big part of why it is so cool. "The Ninth Wave" is still just an amazing piece of art pop.
