"This is art....this is ART!" You're 100% correct. My family bought a new stereo in the mid-80s and whilst listening to the radio one lazy Saturday morning, this song came on for the first time and I dropped whatever I'd been doing and just sat in front of the speakers, absolutely spell-bound. It became a childhood core memory for me and I'm so happy she's being recognised for it again. Great reaction!

It's called "interpretational modern dance"..1985 the song come out.. What's interesting is that when this song came out in 1985 MTV rarely played it, they only played it late at night as they considered it "alternative music", as Kate was not that popular on MTV at all, so late at night was the only time they played most of Kate's songs and videos. So I remember setting up my VCR taping Running up that hill video when I went to bed, so I could fast forward to Kate's "Running up that hill" so I could watch it whenever I wanted to. The first time it came out on MTV and I heard the song and video I went straight to the record store and they were like "Kate who"?. They looked and said "Sorry we don't have Hounds of Love album by Kate Bush but we can order it for you", so I ordered it, it took a week and once I had it I never stopped listening to it. Again it was not played often on MTV at all. Sad but true. Right now I would Kate's song "Running up that hill" and the album "Hounds of Love" is more popular in the US NOW than it was way back then....sad but true but also so happy for so many young people to get into Kate Bush. She deserves it!

EMI signed Kate up when she was sixteen after hearing a demo tape that David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) paid for her to have professionally recorded and produced. It would be more than two years before Kate recorded her first album and she spent the interim period developing her craft, and taking lessons in dance and mime. She learned mime from Lindsay Kemp, who also taught David Bowie. The type of dance you saw in the video is usually referred to as interpretive dancing, and can include elements of many different dance styles, including ballet.

Kate Bush is regarded as the most influential female artist of the last three decades...no shit. She was signed to EMI at the age of 16 and by then she had written over 200 songs!! She was immediately given 100 per cent creative control. Her debut album The Kick Inside came out in early 1978 and Wuthering Heights raced up the charts to number one in the UK and all over Europe. 'The Man with the Child in His Eyes' reached no 3 on the British charts and won a British literary award for best song lyrics..she wrote it when she was 11 years old!!! Kate was the first female British artist to land a number 1 hit and a number one album of songs written and performed, she was also to become a few years later, the first self-produced female artist. She was the first artist to pioneer the headset microphone for her heavily choreographed live production in 1979. The first version was made from a coat-hanger!! She was the first solo artist to utilize digital sample technology in her writing and production. This is a woman who can ask Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd if they would like to be guests on her album, and the answer is 'Yes please", before they even hear a single note of it. Kate's status is huge and always has been, it's just that America was a little bit slow and came a bit late to the party!

This is my second favourite song of Kate Bush, Babooshka being my favourite. Even though she's a talented dancer, (I call her style of dance "expressionist") when she left school she tried to get into dance school but nobody would accept her as she had no qualifications in ballet - then she met British dancer Lindsay Kemp who gave her lessons in movement and the rest, as they say, is history 😊 I hope you will react to Babooshka soon, you'd love it.

I’m old enough to remember her debut on Top Of The Pops: the weekly chart run down show, when Wuthering Heights was released. That got to number one in the UK. She had plenty of hot singles between that and this in 1985, but there was something about the Hounds Of Love album that made her even bigger. I remember when the tv show Miami Vice used another song from the album, Hello Earth. It was very impactful. She’s just a phenomenal artist. Always doing things her way and always innovating. This song was a number 3 hit when first released. So it was already a huge song, but now of course it’s even bigger. I’m so happy for her! But yeah, this whole album deserves the respect of a full review. In fact, she released a live album called Before The Dawn, which took the whole second side of the album and made it into a piece of theatre. Well worth a listen too.

Kate Bush is highly respected as a unique artist in both music and dance, she trained under Lindsay Kemp, the same choreographer who taught Bowie to mime. The Hounds of Love was the second album Kate had full artistic control over, the first was "The Dreaming" from 1982 & often referred to as her "she's gone mad" album because of the densely lat Yered soundscapes she created on her Fairlight synthesiser which was fairly new at the time. The only other artists I can think of for comparison are Bowie & possibly Tori Amos

Great reaction 🔥 I was quite young when I first saw/heard Kate Bush. It was a DVD compilation of 80's music videos The song was "Cloudbusting" (1985) off her "Hounds of Love" album (same one that has "Running up that Hill (A Deal with God" on it). From then on became one of my favorite artists. Kate is definitely in a league of her own who inspired many artists who came after her (Tori Amos, Bjork, Lorde to name a few). Kate is every bit of a theatrical/visual performer/storyteller as she is a musical genius/writer/artist and her extensive/legendary discography proves it. Check out Kate's song/music video "This Woman's Work" (1989) about the uncertainty of childbirth through the eyes of the man. The R & B artist Maxwell famously covered it in the late-1990s

It's kind of wild finding these Kate Bush reactions after seeing all your Ren reactions. I saw that because I see a lot of parallels between her and Ren in terms of being extremely creattve independent UK artists who also have a penchant for making their own videos. (Kate wasn't originally independent; after producing a couple of albums for EMI, she used her blockbuster success to finance her own studio and publishing and management companies for self-producing her later albums independently.) I've been a fan of Kate Bush since first seeing her video for "Cloudbusting" (from her album Hounds of Love) in the mid-80s. "Running Up That Hill" was also a big hit in the 80s. And yes, she was also interested in dance as seen in many of her videos.

Bush said the lyrics address the inability of men and women to understand each other. She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding. The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries. The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)". The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu. The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance." The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.

You heard her before as a teenager doing Wurthering Heights and wasn't impressed. Amazing voice all her own songwriting too. Did get a leg up by David Gilmore of Pink Floyd and spent her first cheque on dancing lessons.

She did study Ballet but she learnt dance/mime from the fabulous Lindsay Kemp....who's other famous student was the EPIC David Bowie.
