Kate Bush explained the song in an 1985 interview like this: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."

I feel like this could be expanded as a challenge to the traditional relationship of men as the breadwinners and women as the homemakers and the complications that arise with the unevenness of power in that dynamic. Regardless of whether that's applicable or not, I love this song and the meaning behind it. Thank you for sharing.

Consider the significance of a hill. The top of a hill had literally been important to people throughout pre-history and history, While seemingly symbolic - reaching the top - you know they used to ritually worship or even crown chieftains and kings up on top of hills, i.e. Cnoc na Teamhrach, Motte-and-bailey, etc ... a hill is more than an inspiring view. ... from a hill your sight is extended further outwards in all directions of your surrounding - it's clarity. Anyway, reminds me of "Climbing up on Solsbury Hill" ... Peter Gabriel understood.

It is a shame that Kate is not well known in America. But in the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon. She is a true original, there's just no one like her - a musical genius. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her in 1973 at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour. Hugely influential and highly respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1. First woman to have a Top 10 album in each of the last four decades. She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications) and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).

She’s known, just not that well received. She is part of a avant-garde progressive rock/pop music that is very niche. This song was pretty popular at the time.
@mvellis3863
@mvellis3863 2 жыл бұрын
@@strawman6085 I disagree that the "niche" you mentioned is not well received as Kate is up there with the greats of that style such as Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. And she is loved, respected, and well received the world-over. But in the U.S. she is not that well know by the general population. She did a few promotional visits in the 80's (and appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1978, when I first saw her) but she never toured here and was not properly promoted in the States by her label EMI. She was asked by Fleetwood Mac to open for their 1979 American tour but she declined as she was exhausted from her own European tour. She has an extremely low profile, is very private, and prefers to quietly make records in her home studio rather than be in the spotlight. She does have a fiercely loyal fan base in the U.S. though, and his highly respected by serious music lovers, musicians, and the music industry/ Her records are hard to find in the vinyl world of record stores and shows because they sell out quickly.

FYI for anyone confused with the reference to "The Ninth Wave" it's the 2nd half of "Hounds Of Love" starting with the song "And Dream Of Sheep", ia concept piece, a suite of linked songs. The quickest way to understand the concept is to watch Kate's music video of her singing live "And Dream Of Sheep" which Kate created for her 2014 concert residency performances, you will then have an idea of what the situation is, then you can listen to the entire "The Ninth Wave" as it features on the album. Alternatively you can just go directly to the album and watch the music video afterwards the choice is yours.

The incomparable Kate Bush. This song is about two people in love swapping places so they could experience the other person's point of view emotionally and physically. As in so many Kate Bush songs, there could also be hidden sexual references. I think she uses metaphors like running up buildings or running up hills to describe physical erections. In the climax to the album Aerial, after a day of wandering in the English countryside and swimming naked in the moonlit sea, the lovers return to their house and bed. where they go 'up on the roof' and watch the 'light climbing up the aerial'. In Running Up That Hill, she says 'See how deep the bullet lies', this could refer to emotional hurt done to the other person but it could also describe the sexual act; this would explain why she says 'It doesn't hurt me'. Hounds of Love is often considered her greatest album, but my personal favourite is Aerial; it's a masterpiece.

Finally Kate Bush! She is so creative and revolutionary. The Kate Bush rabbit hole is deeeep! One slight caution though. It often takes people a few listens to "get" her songs. That happened to me when first listening to the album, "The Dreaming". At first I was like "this is...odd". Now I think its pure genius and its one of my favorites.

Kate Bush is one of those artists that you have to watch the video. She is a composer, choreographer, dancer, musician, singer, and producer. Her product is all of it. I always thought of this song meaning as a struggle, to keep going, to communicate, to love and feel a relationship. Anyway, love the song! She does one called Ribberband Girl that kind of has the same message, but more fun and updeat.

She is considered very highly on the music scene and is the first woman to have eight albums in the Official Albums Chart at the same time. I get that chlorine feel. In the 80s, synths and digital drums were all 8bit, maybe 16, and so were digital recordings. Many embraced it in factory settings, which made for that Plastic Fantastic sound. Many hated and opposed it, they were old fashioned within a day. A very few really understood it and were able to play around with it. This particular example of the Fairlight wasn’t quite there yet, but hey. Everybody’s gotta learn somehow

In addition to her being a one-of-a-kind brilliant musician and artist, the other thing that endears me to Kate Bush is her personality. As a long time fan (I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978 and was mesmerized), I have watched, listened to, or read nearly every interview, documentary, and article done on her. She is a fearless performer, but off the stage she is a shy, intelligent, down-to-earth, normal person (who loves to do the housework and gardening), shuns the spotlight, and is still amazed at all the accolades she receives. It is a universal consensus from people who have met her and talked to her that she is an incredibly humble, gracious, sweet, kind, witty, generous, caring, and all around wonderful human being. There is an often repeated phrase that people say about her (fans, critics, fellow musicians, etc.): "everybody loves Kate."

Discovered by Pink Floyd Guitarist David Gilmore at age 15. Kate Bush released her first album in 1978 and it immediately got airplay and hit the charts. She was 19. A polymath, someone excellent in a number of specialties - she has been called a musical genius. Her singing is dramatic, emotional, and spiritual. Her subject matter is eclectic. Here is the lyrics to "Breathing" - which is a kind of apocolyptic horror end of the world love story. Outside Gets inside Through her skin. I've been out before But this time it's much safer in. Last night in the sky, Such a bright light. My radar send me danger But my instincts tell me to keep Breathing, ("Out, in, out, in, out, in...") Breathing, Breathing my mother in, Breathing my beloved in, Breathing, Breathing her nicotine, Breathing, Breathing the fall-out in, Out in, out in, out in, out in. We've lost our chance. We're the first and the last, ooh, After the blast. Chips of Plutonium Are twinkling in every lung. I love my Beloved, ooh, All and everywhere, Only the fools blew it. You and me Knew life itself is Breathing, ("Out, in, out, in, out...") Breathing, Breathing my mother in, Breathing my beloved in, Breathing, Breathing her nicotine, Breathing, Breathing the fall-out in, Out in, out in, out in, out in, Out in, out in, out in, out... ("Out!") "In point of fact it is possible to tell the ("Out!") difference between a small nuclear explosion and a large one by a very simple method. The calling card of a nuclear bomb is the blinding flash that is far more dazzling than any light on earth--brighter even than the sun itself--and it is by the duration of this flash that we are able to determine the size ("What are we going to do without?") of the weapon. After the flash a fireball can be seen to rise, sucking up under it the debris, dust and living things around the area of the explosion, and as this ascends, it soon becomes recognisable as the familiar "mushroom cloud". As a demonstration of the flash duration test let's try and count the number of seconds for the flash emitted by a very small bomb; then a more substantial, medium-sized bomb; and finally, one of our very powerful, "high-yield" bombs "What are we going to do without?" Ooh please! "What are we going to do without?" Let me breathe! "What are we going to do without?" Ooh, Quick! "We are all going to die without!" Breathe in deep! "What are we going to die without?" Leave me something to breathe! "We are all going to die without!" Oh, leave me something to breathe! "What are we going to do without?" Oh, God, please leave us something to breathe!" "We are all going to die without Oh, life is--Breathing.

Great reaction! 🔥 For Brad, a song that you can hone in on Kate's voice with the instrumentals being more complimentary rather than a distraction, I suggest "This Woman's Work" (1989); preferably the music video. This song depicts the unpredictable nature of childbirth through the eyes of the man. This song was famously covered by R & B singer Maxwell (also a good song albeit in a different interpretation). Kate Bush is definitely in a league of her own who inspired many artists who came after her (Tori Amos, Bjork, Lorde to name a few). Kate is every bit of a theatrical/visual performer/storyteller as she is a musical genius/writer/artist and her extensive/legendary discography proves it. Definitely an artist to react to in future installments
