Yes, not just Janeway but also the first female Chief Engineer in Trek in B'elanna, who is a criminally underrated Trek character in my opinion.

Kate gave me my female role model. I will always be thankful for that. She was there when I needed to know, that women can be tough and awesome. She defeated the Borg before Picard!

Kate made us both forget that Janeway is a female captain and reminded us that she is, in the best imaginable, most noble ways. She's the actress that gave the character more dimensions than most other Starfleet captains had and skillfully positioned it very precisely between authority, badass strength and humanness and added just the right amount of motherliness and vulnerability to become - lacking a better word here - authentic. Reviving the character for ST:Prodigy was a brilliant move to make the series apt for a younger audience, you can script much more daringly and exiting when you have a Janeway to make the audience of all ages feel safe. The level of acting in the ST universe is high and there are tons of brilliant actors to pick from out there but I think they couldn't have found a better Janeway than Kate Mulgrew. :)

She wasn't the 'first female captain, yesterday's enterprise saw a woman in command of the enterprise C in the shape of Captain Rachel Garrett, which clearly pre dates voyager by a long margin.

I think she means first female captain for a show, first female show runner. Creating a female captain in a one off episode is one thing, making the captain of an entire show a woman is a whole other barrel of fish. Especially in a series that, unless I'm mistaken, skewed more towards a male demographic.

@@luckymouse1988 Exactly, the captain in a Star Trek show is not just another character, but sets the tone for the whole show. Mulgrew filled that role with grace and poise (barring the infamous incidents with Jeri Ryan)
