I have a son in law in Iraq now and as a Vietnam vet I can relate to all songs of this kind. Too many Aussies, Brits, Canadians, New Zealanders, and Yanks have died in God forsaken places far from home. It's a beautiful song sung well.

This song breaks my heart for all the soldiers, sailors, and marines of all nations slain and maimed and most often for no good reason at all. :(

I can't stop crying. So many broken hearts. Seriously, I'm crying so hard you'd think I had lost my own fiance. I've got to clean myself up before people see and ask questions. This may have just become my new favorite song.

He's home safe and sound and is reunited with our daughter. The entire 32nd Infantry Brigade, Red Arrow, Wisconsin National Guard, came back safe and sound!!

I wish people would open their hearts to the suffering of others, there would be less war. Even if your enemies are dying in a war, it is a tragedy. Each individual who dies has an army of friends and relatives who will miss them and will be hurting for them to come back home. I wish people would see the more human side of things. There is always hope.

I always think this when watching things like the World Cup 2018.... most people just out enjoying themselves and having a great time together. Why do we allow a few egomaniacs to do so much damage to humankind?

Every so often one person arises and wants to shape the world in his image of the world; in furtherance of this he wants to occupy other countries to spread his influence. People quite rightly object and it may come to a point where force must be used to dissuade him from his course of action. Then starts a war which perhaps grows as allies help both sides for material/ideological reasons and Voila! Another big war. We allow it Andy Cap, because not enough people at the beginning are prepared to take the military action needed at the beginning!

Some years before I was born, my mother was a young woman during WWII. She courted disapproval, apparently, by pitying the German boys who were dying, as well as the British boys. And she said that German mothers suffered just as much as our mothers did when they lost a son. I'm glad I inherited her heart. I assume you're 21, Sara. Do keep your heart open until you're 101, won't you? We need you.

Actually, I think the title of the song is "My Bonny Light Horseman" - There's also a nice brief snatch by Katherine Kellgren as she narrates the book of that name, L.A. Meyer's My Bonny Light Horseman: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, in Love and War (Yes- series of novels set in the Napoleonic Era... starring a cross-dressing girl... and a ton of folk songs.)

@@danielquinn5359 The original song, that this is an adaptation of, is called "My Bonny Light Horseman". That is most likely what he was referring to. The artist most likely changed the name so that this version would be associated with her.

Brilliant song, I have the Sharpe CD and love all the songs on it. And so many of them can ring true for our boys out in Afghanistan today. Keep safe lads, we might all not support the government's decision to send you there, but rest assured i'm sure Britain is behind you. I know I am, and will be always :)

Are the lyrics of this version available? This is her significantly modified version of My Bonny Light Horseman. She sings this with deep feeling. I wish she would do an American tour.

I love Kate Rusby. But this version is very second rate. Sorry, but it just lacks heart and passion.

Nigel Parry I respect you being honest and you are right unlike some of her other songs this one doesn't have much passion but I still think it’s good in my opinion though

I prefer the version I heard years ago (maybe on BBC Radio's "Folk on Two") by Tony Rose - it has a better tune. Tony's lyrical voice really makes it perfect. I wonder what it would be like if Kate's angelic voice was backed by Tony's tune...
