I love that Katherine Hepburn said she had no idea who Phil Donahue was, at least she said she didn't. Either way, it must have been a terrible blow to his ego. He asked some terribly personal and intrusive questions and really put her on the spot. The fact that she never lost her composure was a treat to see. I also loved that she called him egotistical in the banter at the end of the interview, because he was.

"Strong and persistent"? He was obsessed about her affair and her attitudes about death and abortion. It's a shame that the Catholic Donahue brought his morals into the interview.

@@rah62 He was crude, rude, and disrespectful in my opinion. He is vulgar and so lucky that the closest she allowed herself down to his levei was to merely call him out as being "childish ".What a generous euphemism . She truly showed her New England roots when she calmly answered yet one more rude interrogitive with the classic, "I rose above it , " Of course, Phil the Philistine was completely incapable of having the dimmest glimpse of understanding in such a statement.

@@ericcaravag4614 It's worth noting that Hepburn did not agree to a television interview until The Dick Cavett Show in 1973. That accounts for a good twenty to twenty-five years of mistrust and distaste for it...all through the 50s and 60s. It's not such a stretch then to imagine that her continued lack of interest in watching television (particularly of Donahue's level) would mean Donahue himself would be equally off her radar in the 90s too. As it is, Donahue's ego wasn't dented here at all. It gave him a chance to utilise his dry humour and pull her leg about it.

Thank you for posting this. I've been a fan of Katharine Hepburn for 40 years. I saw this when it aired, but I haven't seen it since then. I like Phil Donahue, but I think he did an awful job with this interview with her. I am surprised her patience with his questions lasted as long as it did. I like interviews with her done by hosts who are star struck with her and treat her with a lot more respect concerning the questions they asked her. This was more like a Nancy Grace interview with a murder suspect. She is normally very funny in her interviews, but in this one she was too uncomfortable to relax.

@@Omnicient. The notion that everyone has narcissism renders the definition of narcissism so wide and thin as to lose meaning in semantic mush. @@Omnicient. Completely illogical / non sequitur analogy. The point you tried to make, that everyone “ has it” is simply not true, while “ everyone eats” is true( except for a tiny set who don’t eat). The spectrum of narcissism is very wide , stretching from mild, benign narcissism to Narcissistic Personality Disorder and malignant narcissism, which manifests as a personal and social danger and deliberate harm to others.Your false claim shows you don’t understand narcissism at all and there is therefore no point in discussing it with you. For me, end of discussion.

This is best interview I've ever seen Donahue give. I usually didn't like his interviews, all the interruptions. But here I think the flow is good. Clearly they're enjoying one another, the banter, the faux offenses. They're both absolutely adorable here.

@John JACOBS Right, quite the opposite. Listen to her at the end, she's quite taken with him and offers to work for him.

@@damianop100 Agreed. Sometimes the most challenging interviewers are the best at bringing out interesting colours and shades; there certainly is a difference between an antagonistic and a challenging interviewer.

@John JACOBS She was a tough cookie throughout her life. Notoriously so. Stood up to the executives. Donahue's just a kid to her.

He is so fucking rude and condescending. I’m surprised she didn’t ask him to leave.

For all his phony piousness, Donahue shows his true colors with the name thing. The only interview to beat this one was Ayn Rand’s imo. She really checked him multiple times in both segments.

She's out of his League - in fact, he embodies all the egotistical qualities of "Hollywood" she shunned - Phil should have done his Homework & left his "clever Showbiz Tricks" at home. He's right up there with Dr. Phil - bleeech!!

I dont think his questions were impolite, on the contrary they are logical but his character , his style and the way he says things is very insulting, and irritating no wonder she snapped and felt threatened . You see thats what makes a difference between a bad interviewer and a legendary one, between just plain stupid and sharp wit ,the way you put words together accompanied by a perfect attitude.

I've watched several Hepburn interviews in the last few days, and I enjoyed this one the most. Ms. Hepburn seems to have enjoyed this one the most, as well. (Clive James annoyed me with interruptions and dismissiveness here and there due to his lack of appreciation for subtlety and his own ears.) Donahue was, by far, the most natural and the most interesting, i.e. it was wonderful to learn that she was staunchly pro choice.

1:24 he says he would cover his bets (Pascal's wager). Do he and other people that make the same argument know that there are numerous religions, and they each say that they and only they have the correct ways of going to hell or heaven.

20:25 ... i wonder if she knew how pathetic the interviewer would be, same time I wonder if he knows how pathetic and ordinary the common audience is when it comes to partnerships, so that he formed his point of view according to a general public being attached to a broad opinion what is "normal".... it's so strange to attend this interview with Katharine Hep being so cool and down to the ground even with facing the most stubborn questions.....
