James Kalm started keeping track of the doings and happenings in Williamsburg Brooklyn in the mid 1990s. Over the next twenty years he's seen a scruffy band of DIY galleries and art networks rise to international prominence then, due to uncontrolled development, begin to sink back into obscurity. However, over that same period, a core group of artists and activists have continued to prosper and increase in influence and recognition. Kathy Bradford, is one of those artists, and she graciously acquiesces to a unscripted interview and makes a walking/talking tour of her latest show "Fear of Waves". She discusses with your correspondent her switch to acrylic paint, her friends and coterie in Brooklyn, abstraction vs. figuration and the challenges of being a single mother trying to establish a reputation in the New York art world. This program was recorded on January 30, 2016.

You see, great artists like Kathe are also authentic and strong human beings! It always shows through; anti-hierarchical, brave, and ceaselessly interested in everything around them. She is like fresh air! Thanks James!

Hi James, I no longer live in NY nor do I know Katherine but going on previous interviews that you've done with her I'd say she seems happier, in a better space and even cracked a few jokes. Never saw that from her before. I've always felt that her work was very uneven but this show is a very nice and cohesive body of Wonderful paintings, love the show, congratulations to Katherine! A while ago you did a rough cut of a Jan Muller show, big paintings with many white figures in them and you mentioned that they weren't really figures but abstract marks in the composition or something like that. I feel that the figures in Katherine's work operate at that same level. Thanks Katherine, thanks James and as always, thank you Kate. FYI, If you're going to live in Brooklyn you've to talk like you're from there. Thought is pronounced--- thawt.

Nice show, strong body of work. I feel she gets more out of colours and textures because she is coming from an oil painting background. She certainly avoids the flat and opaque tendency of acrylics. I agree that neon colours are very fresh and inspiring for new works. Wish we could hear the stories about gallery changes etc, but completely understandable why people can't go into that stuff. The Canada gallery seems to really becoming a force within the New York art scene. I wonder how the gallery fits into the general lost of mid-size galleries? They seem too big for an emerging gallery despite stable of young or new artists. Thanks James and Kate. Chris

I don't understand why you rush over the paintings so hurriedly, If you were to slow down some of your older viewers could apprehend them better. Will you be showing your own paintings soon? Thanks for all your work, and thanks Kate.

Kathy was also mentioned in the current issue of Art News with a paragraph about her show on page 123 and a photo of her men in a swimming pool "Fathers" on page 8. That's nice!

Thanks for the interview James. It's great to see Katherine Bradford speak about her work. I love the contrast of the neon-red flesh colors. I was lucky to have her as a teacher when I was in art school. danaburns.net

More than 30% water is not stable as the acrylic molecules won't be close enough to bond when the water evaporates. Long term flaking and lifting can occur. You can use an air brush medium instead which contains acrylic so the honeycomb formation can develop when it dries and forms a stable surface.

Terrible paintings. Its all in the politics. I've been contacting galleries for over a year with a series of paintings I worked really hard on and I can't get any favorable response. Maybe I should care less about my work and more of ass kissing. Sorry, just very frustrating. What do you do when you are reviewing work that y9u know is sub standard and not from the heart?
