When I was in basic, ALL I could think about was being back in West Virginia. I missed my friends, I missed my family, but for some reason; I missed being in the mountains more than anything.. Driving across the Highland Scenic Highway, feeling the breeze up on Spruce Knob, the sunlight glares off of the trees across all the hills and mountains, the slow constant sound of the waters, the fresh air up in Pocahontas and Pendleton county... I'm glad im back home tbh!

Thanks, Kathy. We West Virginians love you! You are a class act and make us proud.

I admire the tribute this song represents -- no doubt the feeling of all residents of this remarkable state, that must make anyone a native of the state homesick when they are living anywhere else. I can see why the West Virginians want to "go back home," whenever they have roamed to one of the several states bordering on the state, or beyond. This is truly the "State Anthem," and the beauty of Kathy Mattea's singing is full of "heart" and "love of home!!!"

Years ago I heard Hazel Dickens in concert with Ron Thomason. Hazel and Ron did a duet version this song using a much slower tempo. Most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Would love to hear a slowed down version with or without the duet.

West Virginia country roads are being blocked off by a billion dollar greedy cooperation. Old dirt roads (country roads) that are old country routes (on the maps) are being blocked by a cooperation that ownes thousands of acres all over West Virginia. West Virginian's (locals) all over the state are trying to fight with petitions, however, the billion dollar company is strong eneough that they are getting by with this. Roads are vanishing from online maps and residents all over the state are angry. It will take the outpouring of the public to demand these roads to stay open to everyone. This billion dollar company is breaking the law and they are not being stopped, help us stop the blocking of dirt roads (old country routes), in West Virginia. Contact our elected officials and tell them this is unexeceptable and that the public sees what they are allowing to happen to West Virginia. If not, soon, West Virginia will be the home of gated roads.
