How to Model Muddy Roads

Muddy roads are a common site and even tarmac (asphalt) roads may have muddy verges which can use the same techniques. Adding one to your diorama or layout is easy.
This video starts off using chinchilla dust as a base and in O scale it comes out at the right size for gravel. Layers of Woodland Scenics Talus (Fine) add some large rocks and grout adds some fine mud. Add some static grass and water and the muddy road or track is complete.
Materials
The Amazon links are all items I have either bought or bought something similar to myself. Clicking on any links to Amazon will give me a small affiliate income which I use to produce more videos. Every little helps!

I'm always baffled where all the dislikes come from. The model making community consists mostly of pricks, so someone takes the time and describes their steps, delivers amazing work and effort and still gets dislikes!?Oh social media.

Thanks for another good how to modeling video, though I thought you were pulling everyones chain (joking) about chinchilla dust. Didn't know it existed until I looked it up. I use kitty litter to stimulate small rocks. That static grass thing is one modeling tool I'll be buying as it makes grass look a lot more realistic. As to the dusting powder, I prefer chalk I've made into dust as I can have a much larger variety of colors.

Hi, thanks for the comment. I got my foam from panel systems - it's gone up a lot in price since I bought these though. www.panelsystems.co.uk/product/craftfoam-blue. Sometimes you can find house insulation but generally it doesn't cut with hot wire tools, you have to carve it instead.

Really helpful video. Couple of questions though. Why do you spray it with the isopropyl alcohol? Also where do you buy your grouting powder from? All I seem able to find is white.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 6 жыл бұрын
+Karl Flavell the isopropyl alcohol helps the glue mixture to flow otherwise it just balls in the surface. You can get tile grout at most diy stores but I got my last lot on Amazon.
@karlflavell968
@karlflavell968 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kathy. I'll try that with the alcohol as I've got a big bottle I use for restoring brushes (gets ancient acrylic out of them without disintegrating them lol). I'll have a look on Amazon for some tile grout. I never thought of looking on there. Really good videos which I'm working my way through. Very useful and you make it look achievable without any tricks.

+RMLectronics East Yorks Thanks a lot! I think Lucy's accent is a little more Home Counties than mine but we went to the same University at a similar time although our paths didn't cross.
@waldenhouse
@waldenhouse 7 жыл бұрын
Kathy Millatt Ah! I apologise for introducing a 'personal' comment but I do enjoy listening to accents (as well as the content!). It all started when I visited a place called Fort Steele in Canada where a chap who worked there could identify the areas of the UK visitors came from, by their accents - right down to their childhood. He was quite amazing. One thing he advised me was that, not only to listen to conversation but, wherever I could, listen carefully to the accent. It is quite remarkable yet disappearing fast as people travel a lot more than they ever did and the University issue means that many now 'adopt' an area and their accent begins to diminish. The strongest being Southern and Scottish (Mainland) as wherever these people move their accent stays the same, in most cases. Best wishes.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 жыл бұрын
+RMLectronics East Yorks I think a lot of accents that fade with time come back when reading. You can hear my Mum's Welsh lilt when she's reading but it's much harder to pick up the rest of the time. It would be nice if people could get at least the country right, never mind the county! I sound nothing like an Australian or a South African but the average American will generally plump for those options before British. I'm not sure why. I can spot a Canadian from an American a lot of the time, especially if they say "ey"! Accents are merging as you say and that is a shame.

Are there any alternatives to using alcohol at the start to set it?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 жыл бұрын
+Charles Smith You need something that will run through the material and plain water doesn't do that. You can add washing up liquid or something else that lowers the surface tension instead. The only problem I've had with washing up liquid is bubbles.

Sean Selley-West The technique is the same regardless of scale. You just do everything slightly smaller. I have successfully used this technique in HO but tend to do the wheel ruts with the back of an X-acto blade. Hope that helps.

Hi Kathy. This is a great tutorial 👍 How would you go about varying it to model the entrance to a farm field, the muddy area inside the gate which gradually blends into the field, where a Land Rover/trailer regularly comes and goes haphazardly, but isn't strictly a track? Also, for N gauge, would you dispense with the chinchilla dust as being too coarse and just use grout? (Try not to let your grout addition bias your viewpoint 😁) Thank you 🚂😊
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt Жыл бұрын
I’d start with photos for the farm track and look to see where the ground is shiny, matte, light, dark and where the grass starts.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt Жыл бұрын
I’d definitely not do chinchilla dust for N, it’s far too large. Tile grout is a great alternative though 😁😁😁
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt Жыл бұрын
On the track, I’d still use a tractor model or something similar to do the ruts.

The wheel ruts look great. The waterfall looks terrible. Or was this just for instruction on a failed old diorama?

What kind of foam board do you use?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 жыл бұрын
I just use the sheet stuff from Hobbycraft (UK hobby store) for foam board (the white card lined foam). The blue foam on this diorama is craft foam from here: www.panelsystems.co.uk/product/craftfoam-blue Not cheap! I use offcuts of insulation foam if I can find it but it's not that easy to find at certain points in the year and the Celotex brand does not cut with a hot knife and is really dusty when you use a normal knife. Hope that helps.

I've been working on miniatures for awhile now I've used mostly all natural items except for the glue and paints being natural I don't have to do much except seal it so it don't dry out and turn brown flower blossoms from grasses look like the full size flowers and I've found plants that resembles ferns and Ivy too it's amazing how many look alikes there are even orchids I've found seeds that look like pine cones and paw paw fruits too everything has a miniature duplicate I'm trying to have the four seasons oh I use fake snow I forgot and I'm using a frame to hold the grasses it's the fresh clay I make a hole and push the clay back around the plants I do want the static grass applicator it will help with the tall grasses and the field grass I'm looking for it now I even make maple and oak leaves out of full size ones I'll let you figure it out lol thanks for the videos oh ok I use a paper punch for the leaves I know too easy I even line up the veins in the leaves yes I'm OCD bad thanks for listening Rod Adams

Hi Rod, that’s fascinating. I’ve tried moss etc but they’ve browned over the years despite preserving with glycerin. Maybe I needed to soak for longer. Other than that, it’s an area I need to look more at. I tried a paper punch but I’ve struggled to find them small enough for most scales. I did borrow a brother scanncut which was excellent in larger scales. Good luck with your grass etc.

hmmm yeah drop the o scale kathy acting bit , comedy is a natural thing you can't force it :) but track looks good- you do seem to take many processes to complete it and later processes seemed to remove or hide previous ones, do you think you could shorten it and produce similar results? - thanks for vid tho always good to see how others do stuff
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 жыл бұрын
+Hazed 100 I think you can shorten it but I keep trying new layers to see what it looks like... sometimes I wish I hadn't put that last layer on! It's a judgement call but I guess it's practice as well.

That makes more sense, thanks. I have used IPA + water before. It is excellent as long as the items to be clean are not water reactive (the stuff I was cleaning reactive violently with water but luckily was not something the public would have contact with).
