Vintage tailors hams were apparently filled with hardwood sawdust/shavings, for those curious. If you have access, you may want to try that as a filling instead :)
@theinkyspoon
@theinkyspoon Жыл бұрын
yes! not only vintage ones though. the wood shavings/dust is actually important as you are pressing on the ham, theres steam and moisture and those fillings absorb it better and dont get moldy like fabrics can (also they are less likely to become lumpy and bumpy)

modern ones should be filled with sawdust too. it is firmer and less likely to mold. i bought sawdust ones without trouble, and not very expensive where i live either.

I'm really pleased to see how you make the tailors hams. I've recently moved house and now I only have a small sewing room so I'll have to make do with my fold up ironing board, however I'll certainly make the hams that you have shown. Fortunately I have a few wool blankets that I can cut up for the hams. I remember when I was a little girl (I'm almost 70 y.o.), folding ironing boards always came with a separate folding piece underneath the ironing board so that when you opened the ironing board, there was another part that could be lifted up for ironing the shoulders on sleeves, cuffs, ruffles, etc. I'm so often surprised when I hear people who not only don't iron anything, but they don't even know how to iron! It's a shame that some of these things that we just used to take for granted, have now just become a thing of the past. I was only telling a young lass today that when you bought purses or handbags, they were always manufactured with a coin sewn into the inside because it was considered unlucky to give a purse or handbag without a coin inside it. I also remember that females, including children, were also expected to wear hats and gloves for church and Sunday school, as well as school uniforms. I find myself telling younger people some of these things that have disappeared nowadays, but there are other things that are celebrated nowadays such as Halloween and Valentines day. I live in Australia. I realise that this isn't sewing related, but I'd love to know in what country you live and if you have noticed any changes in your country. I love that thanks to the internet, we are able to extend our knowledge on certain subjects, such as sewing related information here, but it's also given us the opportunit learn about the various cultures and countries around the world. Back to your excellent and very informative sewing related video. I'd be really grateful if you would please put the measurements for the hams in the area below as it's difficult to see the measurements on the screen because of size and colour of the font of the measurements on the screen, and also the contrast of measurements on the screen and the size and colour against the background colour. I'd be really grateful to you if you would be kind enough to do this for me please. I'd also like to suggest something to make it easier to turn the fabric from the inside out. If you sew a piece of thread doubled over at the opposite end of the opening, so that where the loop is doubled over at the top part, it's caught under a couple of the stitches when sewing (around the end opposite the opening), ensuring that the thread is long enough to hold onto to pull it at the opening end. When turning the piece through to the right side, it makes it so much easier to turn back from the inside out. This is especially handy for turning thick fabric through, or narrow pieces such as for straps, etc. The thickness of the thread required will depend upon the thickness of the fabric that needs to be turned, and the amount of tension that's required to pull through. If you don't want to double over the thread, then a piece of nylon ribbon also works well because it will be strong enough to pull on, and it will catch over a few sewing stitches so no need for a loop to double it over. I'm sorry if I haven't described this very well as it's probably easier to show on a video than describe it with words, however I'm happy to expand on my explanation if you would like.

Hello Wendy! Thank you so very much for your time and your kind words! I was loving to read about your experiences. The trick to turning out the fabric from the inside out was great (it's very well explained) and never hear about the coin in a purse and ... I'll try both soon!! 😍 You can find patterns and more detailed instructions on my blog 👉 blog.katiaolivera.com/how-to-make-pincushions. Please be safe and have a fantastic day! 😊

Good idea to use an old wool blanket as padding for your pressing board! 👌🏻Turning an old speaker into a magnetic pin cushion was also so creative. I have made most of these items as well - but I have yet to make those jars with pincushions on top and I think that will be really helpful to store my pins in. 😊

These are great ideas. Luckily, I've been able to find tailor's hams and a wrist pin holder (magnetic) in thrift stores along with other nice sewing tools. I just found a mechanical sewing machine for less than $20 that works great. Shop around--bargains are out there. Happy sewing!

I love this! My grandfather was a professional tailor who made custom suits for both men and women back in the day. I’ve visited his shops many times while I was younger though he didn’t let me touch client’s garments. Lol. I sewed around him when I was 7 he let me touch Singer manual sewing machine. My mom is also a very good seamstress and made all of my dresses for piano recitals and concerts! Now I’m into making quilts (though I’m not American I’m in Japan!) and making all kinds of stuff, and I love to make my own sewing tools like this! I already made pincushions and needle books that hold tons of needles that don’t take spaces and can carry in my purse if I wanted. I was shopping for tailors hem and what we call sleeve pressing cake (the long one), and I was surprised they can be quite expensive! I love that I can make these things easily! I have old wool blankets (100% felted wool) that I don’t use as it’s super heavy lol. Yes it’s warm but so heavy in a queen size 😂Now I know how to upcycle them. 😊 Thanks for the inspiration! This is wonderful! Just subscribed!

Pin Cushions are some of the things I have been wanting to make (for gifts and for use at home). I love your pin cushions on top of jars idea; and, the one on top of the sewing machine. The jars may be used to hold spools of threads, snips, buttons and other items in plain sight. Wonderful. Back in Public School my sewing teachers told me that Tailor's Hams and rolls were filled with sawdust. I don't know how I would ever completely fill a Tailor's Ham or Roll with sawdust (or what kind of wood saw dust to use). Your way of making those very useful tools looks like something I should be able to do by myself. These are wonderful ways to use up all those scrap pieces of fabric and threads. Thank you for this video.
@katiaolivera
@katiaolivera 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Arvetta! I prefer to use fabric scraps to fill the cushions because the sawdust could create a lot of dust when used as a filler. In addition, it could also stain the fabric when it is in contact with the heat and steam of the iron. BTW, It's a lovely idea, that you make these pincushions for gifts 🥰.

What a relaxing and inspiring video, your pin cushions jars are so cute! If you do a lot of notching in your projects it is worth investing in pinking shears to save yourself cutting each notch individually. It also helps to prevent fraying.

Wonderful video-thank you! I’ve been needing a tailor’s ham and sausage press for a while, but I just couldn’t bring myself to spend $14 for just the ham at the craft store. And goodness knows I have oodles of fabric around. Thank you for the clear measurements! I’ll be making these very soon :3

Great ideas! Although I wonder how the wood will handle the moisture from ironing with steam over time. I also made my own tailor ham and sausage. Its super affordable

Wow! Such a fantastic video! Loving your channel! Not sure I've ever subscribed quicker than I did to yours after seeing this one. I was wondering if you would ever be interested in selling your patterns for these? For those of us who are lacking in the area of drawing and layout of such designs. Those who can do, those who can't, buy the pattern lol
