I have no idea with swimming competitions, but doing long distance training, we really don't use kick. It's like her as well, more on arms. It's because the kick makes you tired more quickly, taking more muscle oxygen, and more effort. When in long distance, and you're doing 5-10KM, the kick will be so tiring. So we just use arms. And it's true! If you look down, as in look straight down and not just tilted, you become faster. Long distance also teaches to extend your arms as much as you can, really stretch your body to its thinnest mode. I'm glad a swimmer like this has this technique, it's pretty cool and actually makes sense for long distance.

I've always been a poor freestyler, compared to the other strokes, and today I had a great swimmer look at it underwater. He said 1. my hips were low and my head is a bit high like I'm swimming uphill and 2. I'm using arm strength instead of relying on hip rotation to generate power. I always thought I just needed to get stronger at pulling but I'm excited by the idea of using less arm power and more rotational drive. Hopefully that will make it easier to generate speed with less fatigue if I can make the changes.

Great video. The perfect follow up in my view would be to analyze Janet Evans. While Ledecky does everything “right”, Evans did everything “wrong”, but was a champion anyway. Do those champions with “bad form” have unique attributes which make the “mistakes”’correct for their body types? Or would they be even faster if their technique was “correct”? (Outside swimming, another example of this is the sprinter Michael Johnson).

Thanks for your support Matt, and great remarks! Different body types definitely cause different stroke techniques, but it all comes down to efficiency: reducing drag and increasing speed multiplied by effort!

I don't get this concept of 'paddle' / 'high-elbow'.. instead of using your back muscles, you only kind of lean on your forearm strength.

I am not seeing the same thing The above water shots show she is mot even close to having the body half way out of the water And being out of the water is not better and she knows it In fact the announcer even goes in and on about her staying under the water for 10 meters. As for the head going up and down that is intentional. She submerges the head on purpose Later he talks about the gallop. Part of the gallop IS the head going down. And then the buoyancy brings it up
