I still think the classic cut is best. The other are just powerful but do not sound colorful. The gold lipplate was not impressive at all. I think you sound way better on your flute, though :-). Pls try FMC flutes or Levit flutes. They are gorgeous.

Fellow flute nerd here 😄 I liked the plain ole V cut I think the sound popped out a lot more with that. I find it absolutely fascinating how different each headjoint sounds as well as how different it can be player to player. Even though we play the same instrument each flute player has their own unique sound. So cool!!

This is my dream flute with V-cut headjoint and 14k gold riser along with offset G, split-E mechanism, and C-sharp trill key. I'm a classically trained pianist who plays and teaches for a living. Flute is my serious hobby. That said, the C-foot model with the aforementioned specs is good enough for me. Thank you for your review of this lovely instrument.

Closing my eyes, I liked the V cut the best. The V+Gold was very very close, but it was a tiny bit too "loud" for me. V in silver seems to be a little smoother, especially on longer notes. I love that you played Etude 39 from Rubank. I'm still trying to learn that piece!

Really!? Idt you’re looking at enough HJ’s. That steep lip plate especially, and even a similar cut to the V isn’t all that uncommon when you’re checking out the expensive stuff carefully. Maybe it looked more drastic in the video. The best HJ I currently own has the square cut and steep lip plate, but not so much of the V. 🥳have fun!

Thank you for putting together this wonderful and efficient review clearly showing how different the varying cuts can be! If you are continuing with the Altus lineup, would you consider comparing the 1607 (95.8Ag), 1707 (99.7Ag), and 1807 (94.6Ag) models? Although personally I would be VERY interested in a comparison of Nagahara Full Concert and Standard Models! It seems rather difficult to find any info on the FC model besides the Nagahara website..

I loved you with the Z cut on the Azumi, but on this one I think the classic cut it seems like with the Z cut on the Altus flute you had a lot of air escaping. That said you are amazing and every single one sounded FANTASTIC

@davidkang6433 3 жыл бұрын
From here on the other side of the screen, I agreed with your preferences of the headjoints. The V cut+14k lip plate and riser sounded the most vibrant. But between the Z and V cuts, I liked the sound of the V just a little more but it sounded like the Z was responding a bit better. Also, a recommendation for a flute to try is Paula Robison's flute! (Brannen #32 if I remember correctly)

@@danielandforok lol that’s usually the first ask looking for judgement validation. Well, I was a player and he’s correct in putting it that way. The Altus is a nice flute and could be good for even some of the best players, but at some point over 5k or 10k it becomes up to the player, his/her budget, and they’re own professional considerations. Of course, there are reasons why you would choose a 30k model over a 10k model. If that wasn’t the case, the pricey custom models couldn’t survive lol that said, almost anybody could and should be able to play the heck out of a 5k or 10k flute and be happy. If not, the flute either sucks, needs work, or not a fit for that player… Usually the latter.. 👨🏻

Hi Katie and Everyone Last year I bought an Altus 807 Flute. That is the entry-level for the hand-made Flutes. Silver lip plate and riser. Silver plated body. I then bought a Miguel Arista solid silver head joint. In a few years time, I'd like to get a full solid silver tube Flute, like the 1107, or Murumatsu GX. It would be really interesting to try out the differences in the various Altus head joints next time. Plus, try out the Murumatsu flutes. ❤️❤️❤️

Oh Darn I messed up but too excited to care, I am that elderly on my 60's , was in concert and marching band and orchestra in High School, and I don't play except for fun' but have always had a hand me down , ( like from the 1960's, Not that I didn't very much appreciate it), well today my husband told me to go on Amazon and order a new flute, ok, now super excited, not even stopping to look to see what I can get then same one from FCNY, but ordered my new flute, looking at my order tonight , ha ha guess who I bought it from and never even noticed that it was from FCNY, but its ok I am so super excited. I feel bad because I know you get a perk from them too, I promise to order some sheet music and use your code so you don't miss out entirely. ive watched your vids for a while and really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and encouragement, oh I ordered the Gemeinhardt 30 SHB cant wait!

I’d say it’s probably a tie between the V cut and the Z cut. I prefer the V with the gold and would have love to hear the Z cut with the gold also. I once tried a Classic Cut with gold riser. The gold definitely made an impact in the sound. It had a gorgeous, pure, delicate, ethereal sound. Though yes, a bit narrow. I wish I had tried the others, though am very happy with my Muramatsu GX. I would love to see you review that flute (both wall thicknesses) as well as other Japanese flutes such as the Miyasawa 402, 602 and Sankyo 301. Those also come with an assortment of HJ cut choices. Also…Yamaha 677 and 777. Among the Boston Flutes - Powell Signature and Haynes Q2 and 3. These are all gorgeous instruments and the more wonderful review videos out there, the better. 😊🎶

I have this flute with the classic cut. My embouchure is different than Katie's, I have frowny corners/slightly larger aperture. I agree the classic is stuffy/delicate, it's hard to get quick articulation response in the lower register compared to other head joints. I did not try other heads when I bought mine 18 years ago. I'm upgrading my flute and have it mostly narrowed down to the Altus 1707, Nagahara handmade or full concert, or Sankyo 9k. I wish I had upgraded my head sooner, this is a great model you can play to the professional level.

V+14k I liked best, mainly for tone. 2nd place clearly the Z cut, again mostly for tone. My guess is Z+14k would hands down be my top pick. V cut had some airiness in places but seemed nicely responsive. Thanks for doing this-- quite illuminating.

Katie, you seemed to be most comfy on the Z cut and on the V cut with 14k gold lip plate and riser, and it came across in your playing… Idk which Muramatsu or HJ you normally use, but it you were going to go for one of these 1107’s, my opinion is that maybe you have more room to grow with the gold V cut over the Z cut, as I felt your playing on the Z cut beat out the V cut, BUT there was a certain sonority with the V cut definitely worth exploring more long term. Hope this helps… GL 🥳👨🏻

Would it be possible to make a review/comparison of professional flutes for players on a budget? I mean the cheapest flutes that would still be entirely acceptable in a professional environment such as a professional orchestra or for soloists, meaning they'd have to sound good and not hold the player back in any way (or make the other players lift their eyebrows at your tone). Thank you.
