Hi all! So after 9 and a bit months, I've finished my sketchbook! Come watch and draw with me as I fill my Royal Talens sketchbook. I draw some wintery scenes of Prague using a different colour palette to normal and in a few different styles. I definitely feel proud seeing all my work in here, and I'll be filming a sketchbook tour so that'll be up next week! See you then! Katie

Hi Katie! As I’m watching this tonight, I can’t help but wonder what does your mind see that allows you to create a “drawing” without sketching it out first? It’s almost as if you work in reverse, though I know I’m not saying it right. It seems almost an impossible task to work the way you do, yet it’s obviously the most natural way for you create your art. You know I greatly admire your creativity and art! My mind just doesn’t understand how you do it and am always amazed!! These two pages are lovely, I especially love your people ❤, and you of course!🥰

Thank you, dear Kathy! 🥰 So I've had a good think about this to see what I 'see' before I start. When I look at the reference and start to put down my marks, I have absolutely no end in sight! I don't have a plan or an idea about how the final art will look - I just find it along the way! It's probably the only aspect of my life where I don't plan ahead 😅 I find it's better for me to go with it and adapt as the drawing develops, which helps keep me loose and keeps it fun! I mostly think about the shapes and line when I build up the drawing rather than the end piece if that makes sense 😊 Thank you for your lovely words and all your support this year 💕

Good morning Katie! You answered my question, I think your mind skips the “ where do I begin and how to” process. I think you just let your brain guide your hand and then the magic happens! You don’t think about it, you just do it. And you ask on instinct. The opposite of me, unfortunately for me 😍. Thank you for your reply Katie ❤

@@kathymckinstry1649 Morning Kathy! That is definitely true, with art I definitely don't think and just do! (If only I could apply it to other areas of life as I am a chronic over thinker 😂). I think a lot of it is just practice though and doing my daily art challenge last year really helped me to worry less with the artistic outcome! I didn't have time to think 🤣

Stunning. I really adore this very wintery color palette you have (the blues with the pinks and the browns? Beautiful.) and I love the way you stylize and simplify things. It feels very illustrative and fun but at the same time there is a real sense of light. It feels very bright and fresh.

Thank you very much for your video! I am enjoying watching your process very much, and you are pushing me out of my “comfort zone”. I have many of the Neocolors, but really have only used them with water, very much like watercolor. I like how you just “color” with them. I’m just getting back into my art after a long hiatus. Happy creating!

Katie i absolutely LOVE your colour palette for the winter themed paintings!! I too own the blue/grey Posca pen - it's one of my FAVES, just because of the somber mood it emits. I love how you combined it with that electric like blue 💙. Such rich wintery feels your pieces give off - makes me want to take out a cup of hot chocolate.. lol. When I headed out to work this morning after watching your video, I picked out pretty much the same colours , markers pastels so I'm set to create a wintery scene on my break here at work!! Thank you SOO much for the inspiration for my today's piece!! Have a super week Katie and looking forward to seeing you next week!!💫✨

Hello Katie, I really like your art! He is very inspiring. In particular the color harmonies and the simplification of the design which allow to obtain an elegant and poetic result. I just have one question: do you have a model, a postcard, a photo that inspires you for each drawing or not? Thank you for sharing so much. Sab
@KatieMoody
@KatieMoody 6 ай бұрын
Hi Sab, thank you so much! I used a reference for each of these drawings (photos I took in Prague) - I don't often work from my imagination and prefer to have a reference to begin with. I usually just use the photo and work from that rather than finding other sources of inspiration! 😊

As always an inspiring video, i really love your work. I got the same sketchbook thanks to your recommendation. Sometimes I struggle with what can I draw, I like to draw birds from a book, I was thinking also maybe printing some photos of landscapes and use them to loose my hand a little.

Yay, a new video! Spotted you on the S'Dyer call this evening, will you be sharing your drawings in Patreon? Mine were terrible, but it was great to take part. And the last two spreads in your sketchbook are gorgeous, really love your color palette Katie! 😍 Also, when it comes to Tombows, do you know anything / worry about their lightfastness? I'd heard that they're not at al, so I've been looking at increasing my collection of Faber Castell watercolor markers instead, but the color range of the Tombows is much better...
@tarabooartarmy3654
@tarabooartarmy3654 6 ай бұрын
Lightfastness is generally only an issue if you’re creating art someone might display, because the UV light from the sun is what generally causes most of the issues with fading. If you’re just using them in a sketchbook, you probably don’t have to worry too much about it because the exposure to the sun will be limited to times when you’re working on a piece and when you’re flipping through the sketchbook later. 😊
@EveAshford
@EveAshford 6 ай бұрын
@@tarabooartarmy3654 yeah, I get this. But I also heard someone talk about how they still faded in a closed sketchbook. And I want to be able to look back in 20 years time to see how I did something / progressed, and not see a page where some colours have completely disappeared. 😆😘
@tarabooartarmy3654
@tarabooartarmy3654 6 ай бұрын
@@EveAshford I haven’t been doing art for 20 years (at least, not traditional), but I do have Tombow drawings in my sketchbooks that are 5-7 years old that haven’t faded at all. I’m not sure if some colors might be fugitive, and others not, but I can definitely say that I’ve never experienced it so far. It could also be the paper used. I wonder if using acid-free paper would make a difference.
@EveAshford
@EveAshford 6 ай бұрын
@@tarabooartarmy3654 oh, perhaps I’m worrying unnecessarily then. I’ll keep on as I have been, and I guess I can always scan in particular pages that I love to look back on. Thank you! 😘

Hey Evie! I’ll probably share on Instagram stories when I’ve finished them as I couldn’t watch the whole call - loved being a part of it. I can see that TaraBoo has shared their thoughts on the lightfastness and I echo what they've said! I don’t worry so much about it in my sketchbook - they may fade a little but that’s the nature of the medium! For me I’d only be concerned if it was a commission (and don’t use Tombows for them for that reason). I tend to see my sketchbook as a working experiment so I’m less precious about it, but I think the idea of scanning in a digital archiving pieces you absolutely love is the best idea! That way you’ll always have a copy no matter what happens! (Also I hope that the Faber Castell watercolour range expands too as I’ve loved using the few I have!)

Katie would you please share what Posca colors you have in your tool kit. Is this info somewhere on your Patreon page? Do you prefer them to Liquitex markers?
@KatieMoody
@KatieMoody 6 ай бұрын
Hi Nancy Jane, of course! I actually only have four with two definite favourites. I have the brown and ivory, and then the slate grey and beige which are the ones I used in this video and get used the most! All are the 8mm nib size. I do prefer them to Liquitex as they dry completely matt and are really opaque - I just wish they came in more colours at that size!
@sandrarahimi5688
@sandrarahimi5688 6 ай бұрын
I echo all the other posts about how lovely your two color palettes are. What color Tombow did you use for the buildings in the second spread and what color was the luminance pencil you used to draw the horizontal lines on the building in the first square of the second spread (I hope you can figure out which I mean in that convoluted description lol) It matched rosy beige Tombow so well. Also you discussed how difficult it is to use pencil over Neocolors, but I was wondering if you found that using your tombows over the neocolor sometimes activated the neocolor? It seems that you don’t always wait to use the neocolors last? Also, I have noticed that you usually use the neocolors like crayons without specifically activating them with water. Do you find that later you have transfer of the neocolors from one page to the opposite page in your sketchbook?
@KatieMoody
@KatieMoody 6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! I used the 942 Tombow for the buildings, and if I’m understanding correctly which part you mean I think that’s the Burnt Ochre 077 luminance pencil! If that doesn’t seem right then maybe let me know a timestamp on the video and I can confirm 😊 Yes I have found that before! Sometimes it’s handy for softening out the edges of neocolors - because they are water soluble I find a lot of brush pens can pick up the pigment. You’re right - I don’t always wait til the end to use neocolors as I pick up whatever colour or material I need at the time 😆 I’d say 90% of the time I use them dry like that, but I still prefer them to the Neocolor Is! They do transfer a bit, so I just put scraps of paper in between my pages as I work. It doesn’t combat the issue entirely but I also accept that I can’t keep my sketchbook spreads super clean and neat with the mediums I use 😊
