I have been away from model railroading for 30 years and have decided to get back into the hobby. My previous layout was made with Atlas snap track and I had many problems with derailing at turnouts. I am planning a Kato Amherst 2005 layout which you have convinced me to use Kato track to build. I am not crazy about gluing track versus nailing but I guess I will have to get used to it. Your video on Kato track convinced me to go with Kato.

I've been an active model railroader my whole life. I've built layouts with flex track and sectional track for well over 50 years. This Kato Unitrack system is just outstanding for all the reasons you mention. I'm spoiled now. It's amazing stuff and looks great right out of the box. I gave it a try after watching your dispatches and I'll never use anything else again. Thanks Roy!

I went with Kato Unitrack (and similar track in other scales, like Rokuhan for Z Scale) a few years ago. The main reason was it did not need to be soldered together like old flex track. I have very painful arthritis in my hands. Can no longer hold soldering tools steady enough to use flex track any more. I also liked Unitrack as the wiring is super simple and again did not require any soldering either. If it was not for this type of track, I wouldn’t been able to do any track work myself anymore. Thanks to your videos Roy, I seen ways to make Unitrack look good and more realistic by painting and ballasting it. Seeing how you did that was very helpful in making the move to Unitrack also.

Thanks, Obleo. You are so right: Kato track is so simple and easy to use. The convenience of Kato track has become more and more important to me with each passing year. All that flexing and all that soldering -- I don't need it anymore. I really do believe that Kato track looks as good as any other track, once you paint and ballast it. ...Roy

Hi Roy! I'm like you. I love Kato Unitrack and use it exclusively. Although I haven't built my layout yet, I can still enjoy running my N scale trains whenever I want just by temporarily setting up my Kato Unitrack on the dining room table and then putting it away when I'm done. When I eventually build my layout, I will use Kato Unitrack just like how you've done. I agree with you about it being practically "bulletproof" in its reliability. I use Kato's #4 turnout as well as its wye turnout (which has same radius as #4 turnout), both without problems of any kind. Thanks for bring up this topic. It's an excellent one. -from Tom Pilling

Thanks, Tom. I think that was one of the original ideas behind the creation of Kato track: to put it together temporarily and take it apart to store it when finished. It seems to be built for that. I was interested to read your comments about #4 turnouts. I stayed away from them, after hearing about the problems other people were having. I'm delighted to learn that they are working well for you. ...Roy

My layout is completely Kato track with # 6 turnouts on the main and I have 3 # 4's for some tight industries which are working fine as only one or two cars travel thru this. I wouldn't recommend for yard ladders as I tried one in another layout and it was derailment central when pushing cars thru it, stay with # 6. Thanks to Mike Fifer for showing how to make Kato Flex track, it comes in handy in places. I love this track and recommend it highly, also you can cut your own length if need be, thanks to Mike showing how.

Thanks, Mike. I used Atlas flex track and Peco turnouts back in the mid-1980's, and they worked very well for me. Right now, I have a friend who uses Atlas track and Peco turnouts on his entire layout except his staging yard, where he says he'd prefer to use Kato track. At my age, using Kato track is mostly a matter of convenience. For example, I don't have to do any soldering with it. ...Roy

Roy.......Just discovered your videos yesterday. So enjoy and appreciate you sharing your experiences. You have a great layout. I'm on the same journey as you, just years behind you. Your insights and guidance are so helpful. My layout includes a lot of super-elevated track, and is based on the Clinchfield, Southern, and ET&WNC Railroads (Johnson City TN). My table work is very similar to yours with double deck staging yards about 8" vertically apart. Within a few weeks, I'll have the staging yards operational. One of the mainline loops is already operating with a run of 140 feet. And.....a train ran miraculously with only one power feed across all 140 feet, albeit with the outlying section being slower. I've been amazed at the quality of Kato N Unitrack. I'm experimenting with some #4 switches in my staging yards, so will keep you updated on how it is working, or not working. Since I also am modeling a coal region, I'm also using coalporters for my CSX/NS trains when I'm operating in the 1990s mode, and have the same experience with the first car derailing and coupling. Otherwise, they are superb. I hope to some day to return the favor and share a new insight or idea with you. Thank you!

I am new to the hobby - 3 months - and have decided on being exclusive to UniTrack. Running DC only at the moment. For me it's the flexibility of revising track designs on the fly. Also, I don't have the patience to learn wiring techniques associated with DCC I use #2 (wye) and #6 turnouts exclusively. Reason:heard too much about #4 issues. Taking that by faith. My niche is designing 36x48 layouts that have have both operational and running interest. I have found many variations that work very well and don't believe that I'll have irritating limitations to deal with. Cost is a slight issue but there are occasional sales both retail and estate that have provided low cost material. Appreciate the Evanston videos that have given me excellent guidance and ideas. Now it's on to learning the MRR lingo.

Welcome to the world's greatest hobby, Mark. I think you're going to really enjoy it. I also think you're going to enjoy using Unitrack. It's so easy and convenient to use, and you don't have to do any soldering. I also avoided the #4 Kato turnouts. As for DCC wiring, I have found it to be easy, too. In fact, I think it's actually easier than DC wiring, because you don't have to divide your layout up into blocks, each requiring independent wiring. It's just a matter of running a set of bus wires the length of your layout and dropping feeders from the track down to the bus wires. In the case of my Kato track, I dropped a feeder down every 3 to 5 feet of track length. I really ought to do a video on how I wired my layout. ...Roy

Kato Unitrack looks like the way to go. I've been modeling in N scale since I was 5 (now 24) and have always planned layout with code 55 flex track, #6 and #8 turnouts as well but to he honest, after building so many layouts and then having to take then down, unitrack is starting to sound way to good. I've been spoiled by all the flex track and perfect looking stuff that I start to forget the point of all of it which is operation. Looks mean nothing when your operation isn't as good looking as the track itself. After spending months just laying cork roadbed, then laying track and soldering feeders, I'm honestly willing to overlook the uniform and toy like shape of the roadbed. When all you have to do is snap it together l, lay it down and hook it up, it cant get much better then that.

Hello. I am a Japanese model railway enthusiast. I recently had the opportunity to review some of your older videos in order. I also use KATO's UNITRACK. In fact, when KATO was founded, it received OEM supply from Atlas for railway tracks and sold them in Japan, then switched to in-house production and eventually developed the Unitrack. It is said that this is why the standard for a straight line is 124 cm (5 inches). The spacing between double tracks is also derived from the width of Atlas STANDARD SWITCHE. Sorry for the automatic translation. I look forward to seeing many of your videos in the future.

Roy thanks for yet another great video. Usually I agree with you and your observations, but not this time. I find that Kato Unitrack appears to me to be toy like and suffers from a somewhat limited application. Which is why I use Peco flex track and points. It allows me complete freedom in the design of my layout and provided you have reasonable skills in laying the track I find it is very reliable. The other factor for me is the cost associated with the track and accessories that are needed and also the availability of the full range of Unitrack. I do appreciate the work Roy that you have put into your layout and agree that you have done a very good job with Unitrack but it just isn't for me.Thanks again Neil W.

Thanks, Neil. Kato track does have its limitations, as you say, and like any track, does need to be painted or weathered and ballasted to look good. Back in the 1980's, I used Atlas flex track and Peco turnouts on a layout I built back then and was quite happy with those products. At my current age, though, I need something that is a little easier and convenient, hence Kato track. Absolutely, Kato track isn't for everybody, and the good thing is that we have a number of options to choose from. I'm not trying to sell anyone on Kato track as such, only to describe my experience with it. ...Roy

Great video, Roy. However, anyone considering using Kato Unitrack should look first at Tomix Finetrack. Tomix is also a Japanese manufacturer, but unfortunately their products are not so widely available outside Japan, unlike Kato. In many ways the Tomix track is preferable. By having a lower ballast profile, it looks better in my opinion. There is a much wider range of turnouts, such as double slips, three-way points, curved points, and of course a scissors crossover. Like Kato, the turnouts have the switch machines embedded in the ballast depth, but with the added advantage over Kato of being able to slide out the machine (for maintenance or replacement) without disturbing the track. There is a wide selection of curve radii too. Availability is the issue here, although mail order from Japan is an option.

I am using both Kato for main lines and Tomix for my branch lines and yards, as the kato is wider and taller than Tomix finetrack so it seems like a more prototypical combination. the Kato #20-045 62mm (2 7/16") Snap-Track Conversion Track is actually made to attach Kato to Tomix finetrack

My good comments everyone. Roy, I am just now getting into the hobby. I owned a Tyco HO set (simple oval) many years ago, but did not do much with it. I just bought the N scale Kato M2, a Micro Trains N scale loco with a B unit and some rolling stock. Put all on two closer doors (Lol), and it all works really nice. We will be moving this summer, small two Bdrm apt., but I’d like to add more variety to my M2 ASAP. Please advise if and when you can, thanks for your video and clear explanations; especially since I don’t have much knowledge about electricity, etc.

It started with a train for the the tree,,,,,,,and now I have a Kato M1 with a V2 on the way, Needless ti say I am overwhelmed. Ive spent 4 days in a track plan but I just cant do it. Is there anyway you can help me with an L shaped table top HCD track plan? Ive got kato and using the Anyrail s/w. I just cant seem to make an L. So I was thinking reverse loop...but thats a little outta my scope too lol. Any help would be great

If you do the math, you'll see Kato Unitrack is not much more expensive than flex track with cork roadbed, and as you stated, Kato does not need the added expense of solder, flux, and soldering gun. The elimination of soldering is worth the slight price jump to some people. Rivet counters will not like the Japanese tie spacing, and that's fine for perfectionists. Nothing wrong with that at all. By the way, the people at Model Railroader Magazine call it "CAH-to", and I would imagine they have spoken with the Japanese people who make it, so I would trust their pronunciation. Nice video. You explained it well. Oh, one more thing: I agree. You gotta love those under-track switch machines and the plug-n-play wiring.

Hey Roy, Great video!! I'm not a fan of KATO track. I used cork roadbed and atlas flextrack on the first layout I put together. However, now I seem to be teetering on the choice between using PECO flex track,,or going with fastracks and hand laying track and constructing turnouts myself. I can do either and I will choose. I can't really put my finger on as to why I am not a fan of it but, Your layout looks great, and if You are happy with KATO, then I am happy for You!!!

I understand completely, Ralph. Lots of people don't like Kato track for various reasons. I can appreciate Atlas flex track, Peco turnouts, and cork roadbed, having used them back in the 1980's. But Kato track offers me a certain amount of convenience now that I'm older. I have no experience with Fastracks and would love to know how it works out for you, if you decide to go that way. ...Roy

A 30 year gap for me also Roy! I returned to the hobby only in January this year and I only have room for a 4 x 3 ft layout. I had read about Kato track but initially I stuck to what I used before i.e. Peco code 80. I soon became dissatisfied with it and changed to Kato. I'd like to pick up on a point you made in the video about people complaining that Kato is expensive. My layout using Peco was basically a double oval with a couple of sidings and a long branch line that ran around the perimeter to a tiny second station at the end of the branch. It incorporated 6 points (turnouts). In changing to Kato I replicated the layout as nearly as possible, since I was happy with the operational possibilities it gave me. My Kato layout incorporates 4 number 6 points and the double crossover. I Spent roughly £250 on the Kato track and controller. The Peco track was around £130 plus £70 for a Smartswitch and power supply with its ability to operate 4 of the points (leaving me to change the other 2 manually). So, for my extra £50 I've got all my longer and more gently curving turnouts all under control. I also have locomotives that seem happier running on the larger radius 282 and 315mm curves. I've adjusted the layout a couple of times in minor ways, since I was able to do so easily, whereas I was avoiding altering details on the Peco track because of the aggravation involved in doing so. It seems there is a 50 percent wiring reduction under the baseboard too! And by the way....not a drop of solder in sight!!! Neither are there any track pins or glue holding the track down. I have about half a dozen strategically placed one inch pieces of double sided tape holding the track in vunerable places. I'm sure that laying ballast and grass around the edges will 100 percent secure it. I'm using the Kato controller only to operate the turnouts. I have an NCE Powercab for running my locomotives under DCC. If I may, I'll finish with a known fact about the double crossover. When I got mine, I thought it was faulty. Three of the four blades would flip open or close but the fourth would sometimes stop part way. The trick is to move the turnout switch deliberately slowly. Don't ask me why it works, it just does! The single switch is in effect operating 4 point motors at the same time. Best regards....Alec.....A Kato convert!

Wow! Welcome back to model railroading, Alec! It seems like once a model railroader, always a model railroader, despite those years away from the hobby. Yes, less track and no soldering! That's two good things. Kato track is a whole lot easier to use than other brands, and yes, I'm sure than ballasting is the only thing you need to do to secure the track. Like you, I use an NCE PowerCab and am very happy with it. I have two double cross-overs on my layout, and recently, one of the 4 sides on one of them has started to stick a little. I'm not sure why it does this, but I just give it a little nudge and then it moves. Kato track is the only kind of track that I would want to use. ...Roy

Try the little trick of moving the turnout switch slowly Roy. On mine if I hold the switch about mid way for a moment I can see the 4th blade move about a second after the other three. I think its something to do with the switch trying to move the equivalent of 4 turnouts in one go. I'm no expert on electrical theory, but probably the delay with the fourth blade wouldn't occur if the voltage was a little higher.

interesting video Roy. I am in HO scale but before I built my current layout I had picked up a bunch of HO Kato Unitrack during a closeout at a local hobby shop. I found the HO verson to be about the nicest sectional track around. In HO they use Code 83 rail and it doesn't look bad (especially with painting, weathering and ballasting. There are a few problems with HO Unitrak. First is the cost, second is the limited line, HO scale Unitrak has only about 50% of the selection available in N Scale. That is because Kato's corporate sales effort is in N Scale. The US HO scale market is an after thought to Kato (but they DO make some nice items). The last issue is the fixed radii, but that is common to all sectional track systems. I like to use transitions in my curves, and sometimes like the "flow" you can get with flex track. That's just one person's preferences though. Overall, if Kato made more HO scale items, I would be sorely tempted to use that on a full layout..

I have started using this track system and have a problem with the fit between rails with double main lines tracks. My engines will stop dead as it hits the joined pieces as there is a tiny lip up between the joined rails. That lip catches the front steps on Scale Trains engines and or Kato engines. All the joiners are on correctly on the double track. I can see I will have to go around the layout feeling for these lips and I guess I'll have to grind the lip away so it is a smooth transition between the track pieces. have you had this problem and how did you solve it?

Yes, I have 2 double-crossovers on my layout, and they both work very well. They have been especially useful in crossing back and forth on my double-track mainline. Some in the hobby say they're not as prototypical looking as single crossovers, and that may be true. But they fit better in a limited space. I think you will not regret your decision to use Kato track. ...Roy

Roy, First let me say how much I enjoy your videos. You have been an inspiration to me as I am in the planning stages of my N-Scale layout. I have watched many videos and reviews of all the brands of track that are available, and Kato seems to be the choice of many serious modelers. I have a question though. In looking at the various components that Kato offers, specifically track and electrical connections, is there any literature that you know exists that addresses what connection goes to a specific Kato component ? It seems that Kato has many components that are connection specific. Also, Kato seems to offer its electrical connections typically in 35" lengths. How did you manage to run power on your layout to components greater than the lengths Kato provides? I have not seen any extensions offered by Kato that would power layout components at 50" lets say. Not being too handy in the electrical side of things, I do no want to get in the habit of splicing wires and removing Kato connections in order to increase the distance of a particular connection but if that is my only option, o well.

Kato track is so reliable because it related to the way of Japanese playing the model railroad. Since the living space in Japan (same as most of the Asian countries), most of the Japanese will plug the tracks together when they play the model railroad in every single time and dismantle it afterward. Therefore, they have same joiner design in Unitrack of Kato and Fine Track of Tomix.

Yes, GlitterGirl, you can run Kato trains on E-Z track, although as you may have already guessed, I’m a big believer in Kato track. Sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge to couple locos and cars with couplers by different manufacturers, For example, I sometimes find it slightly difficult to couple my freight cars with Micro-Trains couplers (which I really like) up to my diesels with Kato couplers (whose couplers I don’t rspecially like). Kato or flex tracks are one of those questions without a right answer. I used a lot of it for hidden staging when building a very large commercial layout. It saved a lot of time by avoiding installing switch machines for the numerous turnouts. Because of space limitations it was preferable to have surface mounted switch machines and the design and reliability of the Kato turnouts were an obvious choice. Because of the complexity of the visible layout a number of changes were made in staging and it was easy to try a variety of solutions with Unitrack. All of that said, I chose to use flex track for visible track on that layout as I have for all other layouts I've built. Budget is an important reason. Track appearance is important to me. For that reason I use code 55 track. Kato is not available in code 55. Even though there is a variety of sizes and radii available I find it can be tedious trying to come up with track sections which fit and they start dictating the track planning rather than the other way around. And although weathering and other techniques can minimize the cosmetic limitations of Unitrack, the difference is apparent to me. I've just begun my first TTrak module and of course am using Unitrack for the module. I will experiment there with applying the ballast and weathering techniques practiced by you and Mike Fifer.

Thanks, Jerry. You are right: Kato Unitrack does has some limitations, but at my age, I need to use track that is convenient and reliable. I need to avoid all of that bending, cutting, and soldering that seem to be a necessary part of using flex track. I know of others in the hobby who have used Kato Unitrack in their staging areas and flex track on the visible parts of their layouts. It makes sense. In my staging area, I have 12 Kato #6 turnouts. They are easy to reach for throwing manually, but the problem is: it's difficult to see which way they are thrown. So I'm going to install NCE Switchkats to control them. I really like the appearance and realism of code 55 track, and it's unfortunately that Kato doesn't make code 55 track. There's one other thing I wish Kato would make, and that is curved turnouts. ...Roy

Just as a point of information, I'm 76 years old and wear biforcals. Flex track does present challenges. Atlas now makes a code 55 snap track with molded ballast similar to Kato. The variety of pieces is very limited, however. It is preferable to avoid the use of curved turnouts because they may be less reliable. However, in a few situations they are useful.

Good Morning Roy... again, another really great video. This particular conversation is very insightful. I too am on the fence. I've built two N scale layouts and both have been completely Atlas flex with Atlas turnouts. I am considering a third and probably my last in the somewhat near future in a room 12x20'.. I am also considering going double deck. I like what you and others have done with the staging on a lower level. The more I see Kato..the better I like it. I have written Mike Fifer in the past for his take on using it and was very pleased with his comments as I was your's in this current video. For me it seems the big hang up may be the price.. I have two questions for you. Do you have a ball park figure on what you have spent so far in track on your layout? And two..and I don't remember if I asked Mike this or not..I'm thinking not because I certainly don't remember getting an answer.. Do you know why Kato does not manufacture longer straight sections..say even 18"..let alone longer as you easily find in flex track? thank you for your video's Roy.. always a pleasure .. Tom

Hi Tom! I'm glad you found this video to be insightful. I plan to do more, using this format. I used Atlas flex track in the past and like it. But at my current age, I need to use a track that is more convenient and requires less work (as in no soldering, for example). Kato track provides me that convenience, albeit at a higher price. I'm glad you contacted Mike Fifer about Kato track, because obviously he uses it, and he has been a big inspiration for me. Actually, I don't know how much I've spent so far on Kato track, but I know it's a lot. I keep a notebook in which I write down all of my layout expenditures, but so far, I haven't added it up. Thousands and thousands spent on my small layout so far. It's an expensive hobby, but I love it. That's a good question about longer straight sections. That would mean less track joints on our layouts. I wonder if Kato has ever considered making 3-foot sections of flex track. ...Roy

Hi Roy .I discover your videos this week and I like to see it ; I'm French and i appreciate you speak slowly, that i can understand easily i've a question about your superelevated track on helix ; which radius did you use (481/447 or 414/381,? ) i 've seen you regreat your helix but are you happy with superelevated track (visual of course but about derailment ?) thanks
@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569

Hi Snoopy! Thanks for your comment. I used the super-elevated track on the helix because it comes as double track, making it easier to install on the helix. Regular single track sections would've been much more challenging to install. It's possible that the super-elevated track may have contributed to derailments and unwanted uncouplings in the helix, but I don't really know if this is the case or not. ...Roy

One limitation with Kato Unitrack is the limited number of lengths (of straight sections) and angles (of curved sections), however it's possible to remove a piece of molded roadbed from the middle of a section, then slide one of the remaining pieces of roadbed to touch the other remaining piece, and then trim the rails to create a custom section. After leaving the hobby for 15 years, I'm experimenting with HO Unitrack for a shelf layout, but as of 2024, HO still only has one crossing angle available (90 degrees), which is annoying.

Kato track is rugged and reliable. It also simplifies some tasks. I used it for large hidden staging yards on a public display layout because reliability was a top priority. It is possible to achieve realistic flowing track with Kato.. I have found, however, that some modelers either fail to notice or attempt to fudge a little on alignment and force connections which leads to derailments. But I feel Kato track is too expensive for a medium to large layout. I find it is easy to make modifications to flex track so long as it hasn't been ballasted. I'm also more concerned with matters of appearance. I see the rail and molded roadbed as very out of scale. The solution is to disguise the track in an attempt to divert any attention from the track. To me, rails are an important part of railroads. So I use weathered Railcraft code 55 track. I do use Atlas code 55 turnouts because I feel they have more rugged construction and are simpler to wire.

Thanks, Jerry, I appreciate your comment. It's good to hear about your experience. One of the best things about model railroading is sharing our experience. I have friend who uses Atlas flex track and a combination of Atlas and Peco turnouts everywhere on his layout, except in his staging yard where he uses Kato track for whatever reason. As you suggest, we have to avoid kinks in laying our track, whether using flex track or sectional track, because they lead to frustrating derailments. I have visited an N-scale club layout in Orlando that uses Atlas code 55 track, and I think it looks fabulous, compared to Kato track which is code 80. ...Roy

Honestly, Kato track is one of the best things to happen for model railroading ever. The only place I will use flex is in situations where i want unballasted, somewhat neglected looking track, such as on industrial spurs, around coal mines, and so on, or where I have no option but to handlay a turnout due to some limitation.

I used Atlas #6 switches one time, and flex track and cork roadbed. The work on the track was tedious and never looked right to me. KATO Locomotives are more reasonably priced then most! Personally I Love Fox Valley and Broadway because of the fine detail packet included with FV and the better brighter looking paint scheme's from both companies. The PRR M1A Steamer from Brodayway Limited was about $240 when I bought mine. It came with DCC and the Paragon 2 sound system which I think is awesome. BLI Now has the new Paragon 3 sound system and the Diesels are running about 140-150 right now. Bachmann Steam isn't so bad either so long as you get their newest versions. I have a 2-10-2 and a 4-8-2 by Bachmann and they have run flawlessly for about 2 years now. I've seen all types of KATO Diesels offered from Model Train Stuff for just under 80.00. Not sure if you have looked at their online store or not but they have some decent prices and they are pretty quick on delivery. Anyways, I have bought 3 Fox Valley GE ES unit's and 3 of their SD-70ACe's for right around $85.00 each. Please consider looking at Model Train Stuffs website if you haven't all ready.

I've been considering using a combination of Kato Unitrack (in Swamp/Marsh Areas, and where the Track needs to raised more), and Peco Set Track & Streamline: I'm using CODE 80. There are parts where I'll need to use Flex Track, due to the design of those parts. After watching this Video, you may have convinced me to use more KAT than I had planned to use: I plan to use a mix of Wooden & Concrete Ties, but I wasn't aware until now, that KATO Unitrack was available with Concrete Ties. I guess I could carve out the Base Foam where I don't want the track to be that high (although that would be a bit awkward to obtain a smooth surface, unless I placed a thin layer of fine ballast as a bed for the track) ... Or I could just Build Up the Ground Cover (Soil/Gravel) slightly.
