that they basically learn to flop summarizes it well from what i'm aware. saw one guy say that he's careful to do those drops, so that each limb and body part hits the ground sequentially rather than a belly flop (note the knee landing first) - he then demonstrated this with a surprisingly quiet death drop. i've seen at least 2 videos where there's people vaguely familiar with vogueing, yet they go full send with a death drop. and that's how some rando slams into the ground and gets concussed.
