The Kathirimalai is a mountain situated in between the Western and the Eastern Ghats of Erode District, Tamilnadu.It is an underdeveloped hill station of about only 1100 mt altitude!The temple or the village on top of this mountain can only be reached by trekking. If someone wants to go back to the past, they can visit such hilltops where people live in peace without the effect of modern technology.However, technology is slowly touching them as the construction of pathways is being done nowadays.Still, it is a worthy place for both pilgrimage and a getaway spot.You can have an overhead view of the 1000+ sq km of green mat kinda forest the Western Ghats from the Eastern Ghats.You will be seeing monkey on the way and if you are lucky, you might spot tuskers!.A project called Punnagai (smile) that connects Kathirimalai remote hamlet with long-range Wi-Fi network and provides telemedicine facilities for the tribal people and tele-education services to the children was inaugurated here on Saturday.The hamlet, with 80 tribal families, is nested at an elevation of 1,200 metres inside the Chennampatti forest range in Erode Forest Division and comes under Bargur Panchayat Union in Anthiyur Taluk. The hamlet could be reached by traversing the rough terrain for 9 k.m. on foot from the foothills at Kathiripatti at Kolathur in Salem district. Solar panels light up the households while 32 students are studying at the Government Tribal Residential Middle School on the hilltop. Transportation during medical emergencies and lack of internet connectivity continue to be a major concern for the people and students respectively who are demanding road and network connectivity.The district administration has arranged a bus for transporting residents of Kathirimalai, a remote tribal settlement in Anthiyur taluk, to the nearest polling booth located 30km away.The villagers would be required to trek for 7km on the Anthiyur forest.People of Kathirimalai remote hamlet have a reason to smile as instead of traversing the rough terrain for 9 km on foot to reach the foothills, they could soon use a motorable road.Official sources said the hamlet in Bargur Panchayat Union in Anthiyur taluk is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres inside the reserve forest of Chennampatti forest range in Erode Forest Division.A customised solar-powered flour grinding machine, installed at a cost of ₹1.96 lakh at Kathirimalai remote hamlet in Anthiyur Taluk, will enable 75 tribal families to make value-added products from millets and improve their livelihood.The hamlet is located at an elevation of 3,600 feet inside the reserve forest of Chennampatti forest range in Erode Forest Division that could be reached after trekking on foot for four hours from the foothills at Kathiripatti that come under Salem district. In the absence of road connectivity, people, all belonging to the Solaga community, have to reach Kathiripatti and proceed towards Kolathur in Salem district to purchase essential commodities. Also, the hamlet has no power connection and only solar panels light up the households.With the completion of road formation works to Kathirimalai tribal hamlet in Bargur Panchayat Union, work began to lay single layer water bound macadam (WBM) road for 8.1 km to reach the hilltop.Two habitations, Madhampatti and Malayampatti, with 76 families comprising 289 persons are located at an elevation of 1,060 metres (3,500 feet) inside the reserve forest of Chennampatti forest range in Erode Forest Division and can be reached only on foot by traversing for four hours.Residents of Kathirimalai tribal hamlet in Anthiyur Taluk will soon see improvements in their socio-economic conditions as the district administration has come out with a comprehensive livelihood project that will be implemented by various government departments.As many as 80 families comprising 294 members belonging to Solaga community reside in the hamlet inside the reserve forest area of Chennampatti Forest Range in Erode Forest Division. The hamlet in Bargur Panchayat Union can be reached only on foot by traversing the rough terrain for nine km from Kathiripatti at Kolathur in Salem district. Solar panels light up the households, while pregnant women and patients are still carried in cloth cradles to the hospital in Kolathur.
