Hey bud I have a high speed hotdog critique. The dog deflected quite a bit because there was no internal skeletal structure. Also it was right on the tip, allowing it to whip back faster. I think a more reasonable test would be to slip a wooden chopstick through a dog and then go full speed a bit farther down, like maybe an inch or two. The chopstick is about the same strangth as a finger bone. CHEERS!

Well if everything goes accordingly nobody will have their hands or fingers chopped off, main reason the accident happens is because one's hand slipped and pushed their fingers or hands into the saw or their clothing got caught and pulled their hand or fingers into the saw... if you are chopping off your fingers or hands while it's moving at super slow speed towards the saw, you probably better off without those limbs since you obviously can't feel anything u dumb fck!

I can still see the scar and it did do nerve damage. So what does that mean? If I think about it, especially when I type, I can tell it happened. Very similar to what a callus feels like on your palm of foot. So no big deal. I'll be glad to email a photo if any geeks want to see. FYI, I stopped using a table saw for about 15 years. Having seen this, I think it may not be a perfect system, but it’s certainly something I’d rather have and not need than need and not have. That having been said, I still think that prevention is still the best safety measure here, and would do my best to train myself to always be careful around equipment like this. Granted, it’s possible to become complacent over time as you get used to working with such tools, but I like to think that this could potentially be somewhat mitigated through mindfulness.
@korycassel5197 Жыл бұрын
It's just a matter of time no matter how careful you are that something outside of your control or you simply slip up because people are not perfect performers at anything, and there WILL be an accident if you are doing something dangerous like feeding wood into a circular blade spinning 4k rpm. Just a matter of time. Hopefully people go their whole lives without ever having that accident, but remember the beginning of the video, over 60,000 table saw accidents per year. Yeah, this sawstop tech is a very good thing IMO and I won't ever have a tablesaw of my own without this tech.
@alansmithee4194 жыл бұрын
3:50 "Yeah but they go so slow with the hotdogs" Which is how fast your hand will be moving, if you're cutting a piece of wood on a sawblade. Unless you're practicing your karate on active circular saws, you have no reason to complain.
@Midnight-wh2bs4 жыл бұрын
As others have said, sure when using the tool you wont be moving that fast, but what if someone trips or something? Edit: Because some people cant read beyond this comment, I'm just explaining why others complain about the demonstrations going slow, this is not my own opinion.
@MisterTsumi4 жыл бұрын
@@Midnight-wh2bs I love this logic. "Oh, in this VERY specific circumstance, you'd still be badly hurt by it! CHECKMATE!" Okay, first, Jonathan kind of proves that even at VERY fast speed, it DOES stop the blade. Yeah, you're not slapping a band-aid on it and calling it good, but you're not losing the fingers either. But more importantly, considering what a table saw WITHOUT this tech would do to your hand in that same circumstance, ANYTHING would be better than nothing, even IF it didn't perform as well as it does in Jonathan's demonstration. To me this is like complaining that a seat belt won't save your life if you crash into a concrete barrier at 100mph, so it's not "worth it". That is probably true (not in the Saw Stop case, but let's go with it for now), but how many times do you actually expect that to happen versus the kinds of incidents it IS designed to save you from? PS I'm not saying YOU'RE making the argument against the Saw Stop, just that the complainers who do are kinda stupid.

Just as a clarification, dados are not illegal in Europe. Saws have a requirement to be able to stop in a very short time after power off (something like 1.5 seconds if I recall correctly). Hence they need to have a brake, and manufacturers shorten their arbors so you cannot put a dado stack on your saw because it would then fail the braking requirement (more mass, more inertia, longer stopping time). So they're not really illegal, and you can still buy them here from a few rare suppliers, but they're just not possible to use with the vast amount of saws available. . Beyond that, holy bejeezus those are some cool shots! I'm getting a newfound respect for Sawstop for sure, especially with the dado stop.

This is one of those videos you watch at 3am after a bunch others that you had no idea what you were watch but got interested anyway, or it's one of those random videos you get recommended and it makes no sense but you watch anyway because it looked captivating because you want to see someone lose a finger/tip of a hotdog after putting it through a sawstop
@MusingsFromTheJohn00 Жыл бұрын
Wow! Looks like magic, but seeing the engineering I understand it. What a great safety mechanism.

The dado teeth coming off wasn't breaking of the brazing, but because the outside blades have more inertia than the inner blades, and would have rotated against the inner blades and the teeth collided. Regardless, super impressive and I would love to have this sort of safety on every tool in the workshop
@MasonKramer Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can clearly see in the video that an outer blade is spinning faster than the blade next to it, causing its teeth to contact the back side of the inner blade's teeth and break off.

I think one major conclusion that you missed in this video is that having a 'safe' SawStop saw IS NEVER an excuse to follow unsafe practices. EVER! Yes it worked the 9 times you tired it, but that doesn't mean it is guaranteed to work the one time it's a finger hitting the blade and not a hot dog. The saw is super cool, but technology is only a compliment to carefulness, never a substitute.
@joeshmoe79674 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the makers ever do demos using there actual fingers... 100% agree with your comment. Safety mechanisms of any sort...rocket ship, table saw, automobile are just an addition TO, never a substitution FOR proper safety procedures.

Wrong the conclusion is that it's safer to hold your lumber with hot dogs
@billm16514 жыл бұрын
The phrase "no sh*t Sherlock" comes to mind. People keep making this argument but I have to meet a sawstop owner that doesn't practice the same level of safety. I think the ones who keep saying this don't own one. I have one and have no desire to test the brake.
@calvinmartens5354 жыл бұрын
$100 to $150 to replace the blade and brake system is still a fairly significant penalty for not following regular safety rules... It's just not as significant as having multiple fingers cut off.

My construction teacher was giving a demonstration of the facilities for funding in the shop. All the suits and investors weren't really listening to him, ignoring his demonstration and talking among themselves, until the sawstop made a loud 'BANG' as he pressed a hotdog to it. Great funding that year lol
