On October 14, 2023, I went to Yoiyama of Kawagoe Festival.
Kawagoe Festival is the biggest event in Kawagoe, covering Honkawagoe Station on the Seibu Line, Kawagoe Station on the JR and Tojo Lines, and Kawagoe City Station. Once a year, the entire city comes alive with the Kawagoe Festival!
We arrived at Kawagoe Station on the Tojo Line around 5:00 in the evening. The station was already filled with many people including foreigners. First, we walked through the Kawagoe Clare Mall to Fudanotsuji in about 25 minutes, and then walked along the warehouse streets toward Honkawagoe.
The float pulling started at 7:00 p.m., but even before 7:00 p.m., some of the floats were still playing music and dancing to enliven the atmosphere.
The Kawagoe Festival is known as "Koedo Kawagoe," and the charm of the festival is the sight of the floats being pulled through the streets of warehouses.
The highlight of the festival is the "Hikkawase" a festival in which floats are pulled along the streets of the city!
As the floats are pulled along, when they meet at a street or a street, they turn to face each other and start a musical performance, which attracts the audience with comical dancers. As for food and drink, there are special food stall villages set up in front of Honkawagoe Station and several other locations, as well as a warehouse shopping district, the Clare Mall, and street stalls, where you can enjoy a variety of food and drink unique to Kawagoe.
The Kawagoe Festival is said to have originated in 1648, when Matsudaira Izumori Nobutsuna, then lord of the Kawagoe domain, donated a portable shrine, lion's head and drums to the Hikawa Shrine, and recommended the festival. In 2005, the Kawagoe Hikawa Festival's float event was designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and in 2016, the Kawagoe Hikawa Festival's float event was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, In 2016, the Kawagoe Hikawa Festival was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
