Kawasaki FC420V Valve adjustment to fix hard cold starts.

My FC420V is really hard to crank when it's cold. Let's check the valves and see if that helps. (Spoiler Alert - It makes a huge difference) Just a minor valve adjustment makes the engine run better than it ever has.

Thanks for this video, I had enough of the hard starting and ripping out of my hands. It caused a couple of my fingers to swell up because of the grip I put on it. I concluded the 14hp engine is stronger than my hand! I will check this ASAP. I love my walk-behind but getting injured is starting it suck! :)

Yeah. That's a big motor to try and pull start. Made a world of difference on mine.

@@AverageJoes4u I had to do the process twice because I think I didn't have TDC perfect the first time. The second round appeared to work. I was able to crank it several times without incident. I hope it holds. I did not torque and just made it snug which I assume could lead to coming loose later. Thanks Again, because someone told me once this is normal?? lol

The clearance on the exhaust valve is especially critical because the cam has a bump on it that causes the exhaust valve to act as decompression so the engine can crank. The FC420 that I worked on, the gap was at .018 and the engine couldn’t turn over with the electric starter. I believe some other engines of this type also have this decompression feature.

How do you find top dead center? Do you have to remove the flywheel cover?

I generally just use a zip tie or something in the spark plug hole. Just turn the crank until the piston is at it's highest point. I'm guessing that's probably not what the manuals say but it works.

I have the same engine I changed oil(correct level) I have good compression but mine is still blowing out smoke could my valves be the problem? Runs and everything, or could it be as simple my head gasket

I would think if you have proper compression, it wouldn't be the head gasket.

Does it smoke all the time or just on startup?

All the time I let it run for about 10 mins still smoking and I did about 2 passes in my yard still continuing to smoke only other thing I can think of is buying a new carb and maybe the valves figured I would get someone else opinion

Ok I’ll check them out too thanks man, I picked up a 38” John deer walk behind gx38 for $100 guy said it wasn’t getting spark I got it running so figured I wouldn’t dump too much money into it, thanks again
