Field Trips with Robert Field

Field Trips with Robert Field

Күн бұрын

In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I'm meeting up with Kevin Nakada from Hobie to go kayak fishing on a LEGENDARY SoCal fishery: La Jolla. Producing kayak fishing legends like Kevin and Jim Sammons, La Jolla earned its nickname "The Jewel" because of its beauty and knack for producing trophy fish just a short paddle from the beach. We'll be targeting one of the strongest fighting fish on the west coast: California yellowtail.
Watch until the end for a preview at episode 3!
Comment below and tell me more about fishing in SoCal or ask me any questions you guys have! I reply to every one.
Thanks to Fish Village and Hobie for their help during my time in San Diego!

I'm active duty and was based on San Clemente Island off the coast. Caught a similar sized Yellow fin off the rocks on the island last year. Best 1 hour fight of my life!

Fished La Jolla twice a week March through October 2003-2008. Huge 40-69 lb White sea bass come out of the deep canyons to spawn. Catch them on live green back mackerel. Before spooling with braid with a short tip shot half would run you through the kelp and cut you off. Caught a 50 lb beast Easter Sunday 2003. Went back a week later and watched a friend paddle in with a 42lb yellowtail he caught on an MC swim bait and Calcutta 400. Amazing fishery too for thresher sharks starting in late spring. When the squid move in to spawn mid winter you get a run of big home guard yellows and White Sea bass mixed in. Amazing fishery we almost lost to the environmentalists back in 2004

White sea bass is definitely high on my list Gary. I'll definitely be back out there to chase them. Sounds like you've caught some impressive fish, can't imagine a 42 yellow!! And I'd LOVE a thresher. We go for them in episode 4 up in Malibu, but catch some other stuff instead. It is definitely an amazing fishery.

Robert, if you really enjoyed fishing yellowtail off the coast of Southern California, you should really try looking into Cedros Island. The best yellowtail fishing is when your throwing the surface iron (which is basically a big piece of metal that swims on the surface) they can't stand the iron! The best feeling is when your reeling that jig as fast as you can and all of a sudden it just stops and starts to get heavy!

dude! I was born and raised in cali and you passed awesome fishing in san clemente just south of dana point actually next town south of dana point. fish about 100 yards out from the end of the pier there is a nice rock reef with lots of sheephead and calico bass sand bass run very large, also the halibut are larger here than dana point. before storms removed the end half of the pier you could hit this reef easily, they doubtfully will never build the pier out to its original length sad for die hard pier fisherman. Then there is the san onofre nuke plant just before oceanside, a great place for huge halibut due to the warm water from the plant. san clemente also has a state beach with a totally awesome state campground. the only thing I miss about cali is the ocean fishing in southern cali. also san clem is only 70 miles from the baha border undeniably the best fishing I have ever experienced on both sides of the peninsula all the way down to la paz! baha would definitly be for a series all of its own! Fish on! and keep up with your great videos!!!

Amazing video, and in my backyard.. Why did Kevin have you keep the reel in freespool with your thumb on it while trolling versus using the clicker ? About what speed were you trolling ? Were you flying lining or using weight, what size/style hook ? Bait can be easy or rough in la jolla.. Why I try and be in the water before 5am.. Hell of a day tho. Thanks for the upload and visit !
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 жыл бұрын
+Tyler Lowe it's an incredible fishery man. He likes to let the fish run with zero pressure at first, just his style and it worked pretty well. Probably about 2-3 knots. No weight, 3/0 hook on a solid ring to let the baitfish move more freely.

You've got balls, I know what's in those waters, I lived there while serving in Navy, would go to the cove and the seal lions would be 20 feet away from me on their side of the beach. There also used to be a leopard shark that hung out right in the cove and would come right up to you in the water while diving, within touching distance, not ta mention the rocks. You're out in the water further away but near the shore alot of rough necking going on with sharks and people. I knew a girl who was killed probably from a great white they found her surfboard in pieces, it wasn't a great way to die. Still went out though. Love that area, great video, omg there some good eating in those waters.✌❤☀

Yeah dude, big lesson in gaff management, especially when coming in the surf haha. Looking back at the footage, I don't understand how it DIDN'T get me. Too close for comfort! The Fishbrain app is KILLER for finding fish nearby and connecting with other anglers, and it's free. Follow me on there and comment your username on one of my photos and I'll follow you back - @yakfishfield

If that was Saturday I was out there a little closer to the kelp beds and heard you hootin and hollering! Btw, that wasn't a big wave! Lol Super close call for the boys! Lmao

Honestly, looking at the footage, I don't understand how it DIDN'T get the boys. Like, all my knowledge of physics said I should've been headed to the hospital. Somehow it missed me.

Kevin, you should have put that bonito on for livebait, you never know when a yellow tail tuna might bite. Also, don't forget to wear your sunscreen, the sun is so harsh out on the ocean.

@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you're saying? In Australia and New Zealand they call a very similar fish kingfish. This is a California yellowtail. Just like what you guys call Spanish mackerel, we call King mackerel in Florida, almost identical species. Our Spanish mackerel are a different fish altogether. Different fisheries, different names for very similar (but NOT genetically identical) species.

I really like your channel and I was wondering if I could ask you for a favor because I know you would be the right person to ask. I'm going to Santa Rosa Florida August 19th and I'm going to bring my kayak and try fishing. I've never fished in the ocean and I'm semi new to kayak fishing. I want to try even though I'm not very experienced because I don't know when I will have another chance. If you have any free time could you make a short video on what basic gear would be must haves and what size hooks and line and how you set up your rig. I will probably stay pretty close to the shore so what should I target and what bait. Any safety equipment or advice you could give me would be great too. I completely understand if your busy and don't have time. Thanks man keep up the awesome videos.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
I've never fished there man, so I probably wouldn't be much help. You can watch a couple of my offshore videos in Florida for a good idea of what we use offshore in Florida in general. Look for my mahi mahi and sailfish videos, those are 2 good ones. Up in the panhandle it's a bit different though. I'd search online, tons of info you can find using Google. Definitely have a PFD (life jacket), waterproof floating VHF radio (so you can call the coast guard just in case) and I'd try to find a buddy. Everyone I know that fishes up that way are in Pensacola/Destin area. If you'd want to make that drive, I know a great guide named Brandon Barton with Emerald Water Kayak Charters. Look him up on Facebook or Instagram or Google. He'll show you the ropes and put you on fish.

Cool video but holy shit! Using 4lbs of drag or something? Those fish pulled more drag than my #35 - 45 Yellowtails. Looking forward to your next video!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Petty I like to err on the side of looser drag when fighting a fish I've never caught. Much more forgiving when you have no idea what to expect. But it was probably around 6-8lbs. It was towing my kayak so tight enough to move 300 lbs of boat gear and human

Hahaha not too bad really. I love being out on the ocean, so it's fun. We were watching sea lions and saw that mola mola, you just never know what you'll see. Usually if I have to pedal that far I'll troll bait on my way out, but we didn't have enough bait to waste any.
