Awesome 4th of July on the water!!! This is my second attempt to use divers. I have to say... THEY WORK! So far, I'm batting 1,000 with them. 2 trips--2 coho.
In my opinion, this is the BEST beginner approach to coho fishing. I do think there are much more advanced methods that will result in more fish. My heavily biased opinion is it is worth your while to learn how to use a downrigger. But I would be shocked if you tried 5 trips with a diver and failed to catch at least one coho in the July-September range in Puget Sound.
Divers are a joy to use. When a fish bites, you know it and you can reel it in very naturally. No worries about chaffing off fish or devastating cable tangles. The fight is very direct, so even smaller fish feel big. Just make sure to dial in the tension of the screw.

Thanks for continuing to share your tips and trips on the Sound, really enjoying your content and am finding it helpful. Only been out once this year and picked up one coho. Tight lines!

Divers are great. We use them a lot in the mouth of the Columbia where it’s shallower. You might try a triangle flasher either connected directly to the diver or by a short length of line, and put your leader behind that. You need lure/bait that has its own action, like a plug, spoon, or my favorite, a cut plug herring.

Nice video. I like your set up. I like to see the Rod in the Shot. You’re lucky you got the strikes on camera. It’s always a challenge to try and film with a limited battery life.

Thanks! I actually keep about 8 in a dry storage container so I never run out of battery. That said, I did break a GoPro because I got salt water in the battery compartment from changing the battery with wet hands. Nice videos, BTW! Subscribed.

Exact way i fish them. Works out well if you dont have a downrigger.

I was surprised how effective it is! I’m from Chicago, so still learning how people fish out here. Nice chum in your pic btw!

@@narwhaladventuresThank you! oh yeah they are great up to the recommended depth. Downside is the additional weight it adds to the overall gear on the line when fighting the fish. I recently got a autopilot 120 and plan on doing some trolling Around MA 10-11. If your ever down this way let me know and we can do some team trolls!

I have a laketroller downrigger but much prefer the divers for Coho. At those trolling speeds, the 4 pound ball just doesn't cut it and there's too much blowback and it's mainly for Pinks Kokanee and trout

Good tip! Thanks. I felt like the angle was actually worse with the diver. It actually got tangled in my rudder a couple times. Do you troll with a round ball? I use a pancake style downrigger weight. That does ok. I can get down to 150’ for kings but I have to watch my speed.

I just picked up a lightly used 2017 Revo 13 to compare to my paddle yaks. Looking forward to kitting it out and seeing how much better a downrigger performs than clip weights.

Awesome! Put some turbo fins on that thing and you should be able to hit 6-6.5 mph.

I live in magnolia and just got a kayak, it's not a peddle drive so I'm planning on doing some mooching on the king salmon opener

Nice! I’ve heard kings can be caught mooching/trolling plain spoons by kelp beds near shore. Should be doable in a paddle kayak. I’m going to give it a try this year.

Awesome video! I have a similar set up. Actually going out to the Puget sound next week! You prefer 8 inch flasher over an 11? I’m using the largest deep 6 too.
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 27 күн бұрын
I’ve only used the 8” twice. I did catch fish both times. I think the 8” is more fun and easier to use but the 11” is probably visible from further, so likely more effective in deeper water. Can’t say I’m an expert though. Good luck! Should be nice winds this weekend. Hope to see you out there.

@@narwhaladventures Nice! I have both but im gonna use the 11. I actually do more Kokanee trolling than salmon so im also new. Thanks man! Cant wait to take the outback in the sound. Just gotta figure out where to launch. Think ill hit up area 10 tho. I’ll be out early next week if you’re out there!

What resources do you use for monitoring the conditions on the water? Tide, chop, swell, etc
@narwhaladventures
@narwhaladventures 25 күн бұрын
I understand tidal current patterns using Current Atlas, I use an app called PredictWind for wind, and an app called Tides for the current tide for wherever I am. I estimate chop and swells based on the wind and surrounding land masses.

Oh man! Sorry to hear about the bad weather. Unfortunately, the winds can be a real factor this time of year-especially in the afternoon. Hope everything was ok. The diver is pretty cool. I’ll definitely keep using it. People have also posted very positive comments about 6-8 oz weights as well. I’ve never really tried it but sounds successful.

@@narwhaladventures I use virtually the same set up, but instead of a diver I use an 10-12oz cannon ball on a sliding swivel. 70-80ft of line gets you to about 40 feet. Another good option for folks starting out.
