This is great information especially about the locking straps. One thing I would stress is to check your straps for wear. I lost a very expensive white water creek boat and back window on the interstate because of a worn strap.

Great Video! I only fish out of a Kayak, so this one hit home with me! Thanks Gene! Also, the ratchet straps caused the roof of my car to dent in multiple locations b/c I was tying it down so tight. When I went to sell my car, they thought the roof dents was due to hail damage. : (

Which kayak is your goto? I know my Hobie PA12 is big and clunky and heavy but it really is a great fishing machine. I am 65 and have NO problem loading and unloading it onto my small flat bed trailer. It isn't very heavy when you only lift half or less of it at once. I even got talked into trying a small trolling motor. WOW...works great. I tend to do more sight seeing though. LOL

hey gene, it's me again with another question. A friend of mine is selling a 6'9" MH power fast action Micro Magic Pro to me for a price I can't refuse. I was a newb and bought Abu Garcia Veritas rods in every action and power back 2 years ago when I started fishing and really hate them now, therefore I'm switching. I was curious what u would suggest the use of this rod to be. It's a killer deal but I don't want to buy something I won't use. Also I'm a shorter guy, 5'7" and tend to keep my rods 3 inches shorter than most people's suggestions on length.

One thing i saw with yours that alot of people dont do and is important...the pvc runners need to have no middle support so they can bend to match the shape of the hull...i see so many videos where the pvc has like 4 supports under it and it cant flex...so you then only have like 3feet of support...nice videos

Gonna use pvc for my sit on top kayak trailer Thin wall or thick wall pvc?
@BenFourman
@BenFourman 7 жыл бұрын
Great information Mr. Gene....THANKS!!! A comment and a question. I use the ratchet straps but my kayak is a sit in and I don't have it on bars but a pair of 4" (or whatever they are) PVC pipes I have mounted lengthwise to my trailer. I have yet to haul my yak more than 25 minutes away from home so maybe it'll be a problem in a couple weeks when I travel to NC. I don't really crank the straps but I ratchet them until they are snug and when I get it in my garage I leave the yak on the trailer but I loosen or remove the straps. So far so good. My question is kayak or boat...which do you prefer or which is more fun to fish from?

Someone should build a locking tube trailers with guide bunks in it that would fit a kayak (minus poles). Take out gear, wheel it up, lock the back hatch. Wouldn't need all the tie downs either. PS: add a side lockbox for gear and large rod tube for poles.

I am surprised you are not using some sort of saddle on your trailer to put the kayaks on. Strapping it on those bars alone will cause dents over time. I car top my pdl and use a Malone MEGA wing and stinger combo. The mega wing is just a beefed up version of the seawing. I lay the nose on my trunk which is protected by a bath mat and slide it into the stinger extension and into my mega wing. I secure it with two cam straps across the kayak and bow and stern lines. For long hauls I run an extra strap through the handles and secure to rear cross bar. Car topping is not as scary as people think. You need to get quality cross bars from Thule, Yakima, inno, Malone or rhino. Don't cheap out and get those foam blocks or crappy bars that hook on your roof with a cheap strap and small hook. Get a quality base rack system.

@helotaxi

I also don't use the waterproof housings much at all. Now I've gotten a Session and a Hero5 in the last 2 years that are waterproof on their own, but I used and still use Hero3s in the Frame for a lot of stuff. It's a risk I'm ok with just to get better audio. If you're not willing to make that trade in security of the camera on the off chance you have a yard sale, it's your call. I fish cold water a lot and I just make sure that I don't go swimming. The camera is really the least of my concerns.

you are right it is not a good idea especially in hot weather, all plastic boats will keep their hull shape longer and not dent, warp or oil can. Even on that trailer they should be strapped on their sides unless it is a very short trip, that's why kayak trailers have a bar in the middle.

Looks to be 2" pvc pipe. I would guess that two holes were drilled through each end across from each other. The "top" one being large enough to fit the screw/bolt all the way to the other "inside" so that it wouldn't scrape the yak.

Seems to me that the PCV pipe would start sagging before the kayak
@luphinus
@luphinus 6 жыл бұрын
Depending on the wall diameter, that's possible, but sagging might be a good thing because then it would cup the bottom of the kayak? 1/4" wall would be the minimum I'll be putting in on my rack if I can't find 1/2" wall cheaply. Alternately, running 2x4's between the outer crossbeams, and then laying 2" ID pvc pipe HALVES over them would give support and prevent sagging.

Aliex Folgueira how does car topping mess up your kayaks? As long as you use proper saddles it's fine. I've been car topping kayaks for 7 years and my new kayak is a pdl. I just slide that sucker up my trunk and into my rack. Car is protected with bath mats and I have a load assist bar sliding from my rear bar.

RIYakFishing you have all the right gear, a high quality roof rack system and use towels based on what you are saying you take your time and do it right. I didn't my roof racks where crap and I put too. Much weight on it. And pretty much destroyed my car.

🤔 Gene did someone tell on me for only having my little two door sports coupe to strap my yak to? 😂It rides surprisingly well with the little strap on racks but it looks beyond ridiculous

Ben Shobe man I have a 2 door Civic (2000) and am dying to find out how I can get a larger kayak on that thing. I'm thinking about the ascend 128 t (using certificates and that's the best of my choices). Let me know if u have any ideas haha

Jason Pittman sorry brother, it's a read but this is how I do it with a small car.That's actually the kayak I'm carrying on a 2004 330ci beemer (they look stupid when put together, but it works lol) what I did was found a roof rack that's made for smooth top cars (has feet and a strap that I run through my windows) and I riveted my mounts to it since the bar was round(mounts I have were intended for a square bar). The mounts I use have a flexible rubber attached to a wide "U" so that it hugs when the yak sit in them and then I use the loops you can bolt down on the interior of your hood (Just used an existing bolt and added the tie downs) and use the screw in tow point on my back bumper to secure front/back movement. And just for security I run the canoe locks through the windows and strap it down (also added security if the strap on bar ever tried to give let it wiggle left/right) the key for me in getting it on their with a little bit of back problems and without hurting me, car or yak is the Sherpak roller bar that suctions to my back glass and having a kayak dolly as far back on it as I can so the butt doesn't scrape as I roll it up the bar. I get the nose on that and hand by hand my way to the back so the wheels don't let it roll off and push it on from there. Using the Sherpak as the pivot point I can roll it up and keep from knocking the car too much. Car has some scratches from the bar feet, straps and some learning, but I'm pretty sure it does things BMW never thought it could lol

Jason Pittman my set up certainly not the only way to do it but when all you have is a little car and an obsession for fishing you get creative on how you're going to get off the bank.
