My first time sailing in stronger winds so sail arrangement and handling isnt always ideal. I have still a lot to learn. But given I am a complete novice to sailing it was very easy to get going! It was a lot of fun and great to see how lively this very wide Kayak (OK Big Game 86cm) gets in the wind :-)
The Sail is a Kayaksailor 1.6m2 with the 0.4m2 Genoa kit. Fantastic piece of kit. 5min to fit to the Kayak :-) Will never go out without it again.
I need to improve the fitting of my Rudder cables though as they slipped out of the compression ring twice leaving my without steering which can get quite tricky to paddle back in high winds. So I would suggest for anybody to try this to doublecheck their Rudder before going out, not like me...

Awesome! I have one of these on a Perception Eclipse 19 sea kayak. However I realized I need to put some more hours in the boat by itself to get used to it. It has excellent secondary stability, but fast-rolling initial stability, so just imagine adding the sail heel to that! Once I get used to handling it I'll put the sail rig back on.

I see you have the bigger 1.6m sail (it has three panels). The smaller 1.4 mainsail might be a better option in those winds, and the addition of the relatively inexpensive Jib might have balanced the tendency to lee helm. Nice trip and the rig looks good.

Thanks, in terms of sail l find bigger is always better if you need it for low finds. If the winds are too high you can reef half the mainsail. It doesnt furl like a Hobie but you can reef the bottom square section of the mainsail. I find the extra jib (genoa) EXTREMELY helpful for tighter upwinding. I have the Hobie Adventure Island now and it cannot go as tight into the wind as the KayakSailor did due to no jib. Checkout my channel for much newer videos with the Hobie ;-)

There is more of a balanced helm with a jib and a smaller mainsail.

Pretty impressive sir. Would like to setup a sail on my 2013 OK Trident 13, I have a rudder and not so sure about the little WindPaddle style on the market.

Hi, if you want my opinion I find the Windpaddle style quite useless as all you can do is going downwind and then you have to head back paddling against the wind. This one is as close to actual sailing as you can get on a Kayak IMO as you can even actually tack upwind somewhat and sideways of course. Its a great kit. On a Trident I would suggest the 1.4m2 with Genoa kit as its not as stable as the Big Game.

Marius Schudel Well I'm actually considering upgrading yaks, looking at several with the OK Prowler Big Game II included. The 1.4m2 would be a bit undersize on it, for what they cost I don't want to regret an undersized version.

Yeah I was the same they advised the smaller one as its stiffer and better in higher winds but I also had to get the bigger one to be sure I am not missing out in lower winds ;-) the Big game II looks great. I think its a great fishing platform as its so extremely stable and you feel safe, altough its very slow I never regreted it.

Marius Schudel Well the OK Big Game II didn't end up meeting my requirements, decided their sister company Old Town Predator 13, completely new design for 2014, tri-hull & bow design for offshore, better setup for me at least. Lots of room for a sail one day.

Nice one! Looks like a real fishing machine. definitely would be fit for the bigger sail then with that massive width. Let me know if you get the sail would be cool to hear how you get on. Good Luck

Can you sail upwind
@mariusaquaticus3102
@mariusaquaticus3102 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Thats why its so far superior to 99% of other kayak sail out there. It actually tacks upwind even better than my Hobie Adventure Island. Especially with the Genoa Jib in the front. If you are getting a kayaksailor make sure you spend the extra on the Genoa Jib it is critical for upwinding. Happy Sailing

Sorry for the late reply. Just seen your comment. The "keel" is the 2 carbon blades in the front. The kayak had a rudder to steer. It was an awesome rig but i upgraded to a hobie adventure island a few years ago
