This video I hook into a bunch of Chinook / King Salmon in my 12 foot Kayak. Here I'm fishing not far off shore from Nanaimo, BC, Vancouver Island.

Appreciate the feedback Stefan! There are a lot of things going so it’s pretty rewarding on the Kayak.

A heavy duty low profile baitcaster might do you some good for line pickup speed while being easy to handle in a kayak. When you're in a powered boat the boat in gear does a lot of work for you in keeping tension. Maybe a Daiwa Lexa 300 HD or something of the sort. Something to consider my 0.02

Agreed! I’ve been thinking on the same lines as yourself here. I’m looking at trying a baitcaster. Funny you mention the Daiwa as I now use that for my River reel.

@@BCFishingJournal It's a solid reel that I've used for Chinook! Been several years now and it's holding up just fine. Been using it to jig on the bottom in the salt as well and with some rinsing and maintenance it's been solid.

@@BCFishingJournalThe Lexa 300 is a awesome reel, it's around $350.00 usd. I bought a Alejos for $100 usd . It has more drag and a lot of line pick up and comes with a nice power handle option. The reel has lasted 3 seasons so far with no issues. It's a good way to try a baitcasting reel without breaking the bank. Im down on Whidbey Island in WA and fish every day of the season from my hobie with this reel. I've caught everything from Kings to big halibut and the reel performs great.

Thanks for the note! Yes, netting can be difficult when the fish don’t cooperate. Fun times though!

Thanks Keith. You’ve got to get out on the water to start with! Launch wherever you can in West Van, and use some bottom rigs. I’d recommend a little weight with a bait hook and some shrimp on it. You don’t need to go out deep, especially if your new to kayaking. Out front of West Van right now there are plenty of Sanddab’s, Coho, Dogfish and sculpins. But you’ve got to start somewhere.

yeah a couple hundred meters out of ambleside or near Capilano river would be great

@@bushinc. can be even 20-30 meters out, just off the drop off in 15-30 feet of water

I would do a first try in Poteau Cove, much easier to put a heavier kayak and tide currents are not as bad as Ambleside. Just check the day when wind is below 10 km h and it will be a beautiful day on the water.

So good! I’m on Lasqueti and do lots of Kayak/row boat fishing. What boat are you using? Looks like an Old Town maybe?

Nice! Yes, an Old Town Salty 120 kayak. It’s been a blast. I’d love to fish around your area in a yak. The little bit I’ve done via boat was a blast.

@@BCFishingJournal man I need a boat like that! I’ve been using an inflatable. It’s easy getting it in and out of the water the fun stops there 😂caught plenty of fish from it but it’s so much work! I’ve been looking at the Big Water or Wildy Radar 135. Any thoughts on either of those?

@@cahilldrummer personally 12’ is my limit as I’m usually running solo and car topping. The BigWater or any other 13’ or larger are getting more challenging for my transportation needs. Plus the 12’ is perfect for everything I’m doing.

@@BCFishingJournal thanks for the replies! Once I get a boat here it doesn’t need to go on a car ever again. It does however need to get into the water via some pretty nasty beach terrain. I was originally going to buy a Tarpon 140 for simplicity and weight considerations but that hands free fishing looks so rad!!

Which rod and reel are you using? I'm looking to get a trolling setup and am considering the canadian style mooching rod and reels. How do you like it? Sure looks like fun!
@BCFishingJournal
@BCFishingJournal 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the note. I'm using a 10'6" Kufa Mooching Rod with a MR3 Islander reel. The reel is pretty pricy but a lot of fun. I love this setup, it does have a few more challenges as the line is all monofilament, so you have to keep pressure on the fish. Versus a casting reel with braid (and mono top shot), that might be a little easier to manage out of a kayak.
