Pulled in the water and still landed the fish....somebody give this man an award!!!!! Reminds me of my trip to the pier last weekend when some guy got his pole snatched into the water, it crossed another anglers line so they were able to retrieve it, still with the fish on and it was a keeper halibut lol

One thing I learned by fighting huge fish is to always keep rod pointed to the front of the kayak. If the fish runs left or right it will pull the kayak that way. Never have rod on the side like that unless you back the drag way down

Yeah they’re all manual-inflate. Auto-inflate doesn’t work because we all get wet in the surf, on windy days, etc.

Some of the high-end PFD's are triggered by hydrostatic pressure instead of water. They should be okay in surf or rain and still would auto-inflate once they get under about a foot of water.

Robert what rod a reel would you recommend for offshore fishing and what would you recommend for fishing in the bayou?

I like Penn spinning reels for saltwater, they're all good, just pick one in your budget. For conventional reels I like Seigler Reels. For rods, I mostly use Lamiglas personally, but we use Star Rods at the lodge which are decent for the price.

I rolled a couple of times it’s not fun. That’s why it’s so important to have everything leashed on your yak! Good recovery on his part though and still landed fish.

Yep. We make all clients leash everything down and us guides are always there for every fish fight in case something like this happens.

It’s not automatic. You always get wet going offshore, especially in the surf. If they were automatic they’d deploy every time out.

Nah, it’s natural. Spawning fish mixed with chaotic water hitting the rocks. Doesn’t happen often but sometimes.

It’s not muddy, that’s foam. I believe it was from spawning fish mixed with waves crashing on those offshore rocks.

Crazy fight for sure! Several species of fish were spawning in the area and the waves crashing on a nearby rock formation we call Vaca was churning it up. That’s my theory anyways, hadn’t seen it in previous trips

Those roosters pull harder than most grouper I’ve caught. Luckily it was late in the fight, so the fish was just about spent.

never been kayaking and i wouldn't like being dumped into the water..but it does look like alot of fun..really nice if you eat fish... seen videos of guys floating out in dry suits & fins. that looks insane..you gotta be wiped out from swimming

Yeah, we typically stay above the water haha. This was a combination of a gear failure, big fish and bad timing. All was good in the end though! That’s why us guides are always there with our clients.

It seemed as though the drag was the problem at 2:37, my mistake. I guess with all those fish those things catch hiccups like this are inevitable haha. Great videos Rob! Keep them coming!
