In Thailand, we have something similar called Khao Pong(ข้าวโป่ง), a traditional northeastern dessert. The process begins with pounding the steamed glutinous rice with a mortar. dry in the sun When is eaten, it is roasted until cooked.There are 4-5 more steps to do.

This month many Muslims make a somewhat similar dish called chonge at home where they fry the rolled hard dough bread & serve it in 3 ways that is with halwa or sweet syrup or chobe (dry coconut,sugar,dry fruits mixed together)

In India we use this exact method but we use sand for peanuts and salt for fryums. We heat up the salt for peanuts and toss it with the shell intact and it cooks. With fryums we toss it in high heated salt and then shake it off. Result is oil free fryums for kids and elderly.
