I was stationed at Beale from 1974 to 1977. That sound and all the black smoke from water injection sure brings back a lot of memories. My aircraft was 1464.

Good ol' J-57 turbojets with water injection, causing the black smoke. Most of the KC-135A models (including this one) underwent CFM-56 engine conversions in the 80's.

ANG and AFRES birds got the TF33s and were redesignated KC-135Es.

You mean increased black smoke. Even non water injected takeoffs produced smoke.

If she's a local bird, she's almost certainly a Q-model (hauled JP-5 for the Blackbird), as the last aircraft conventional A-models would've supported (B-52s) left Beale in '76.

Reengined KC 135s sound like a typical airliner. Same with the Super Galaxy.

I have read that the KC-135A was actually louder than a B-52G at takeoff when both use water injection but one would think the B-52G would be much louder as it had twice as many engines.

I read that the noise from a bomber, on the ground, doing power checks, would disable folks from the noise. Never had that issue on the tanker It had something to do with the noise frequency

Food for thought ?? Are KC-135 Airframes the same as Dash 80 Airframes?
@Doc62J5 жыл бұрын

(Q) Model. Not an A.
@kevinswinyer31762 жыл бұрын
@@BraesBladesmyth it was an A Model with the Water Injection for the Engines, but then if it hauled JP7 for the Blackbird, then it became a Q only if it was actually carrying the JP7 Fuel in it's Bladder tanks. If there was no JP7 in the Bladder Tanks, then it was just an A Model. Any 135 could have been used as a Q simply by filling the Bladder Tanks with JP7, then flying a refueling mission to refuel a Blackbird.
