John Gaughan is a magician who designs and builds spectacular illusions for big-name magic acts and stage effects for rock musicians. He has also devoted many years to collecting and restoring vintage magic devices dating back to the eighteenth century. His workshop has been in the same place for 35 years and two of his employees have been with him for 25 years.

So found myself reading the wiki on The Turk chess playing machine. So the original was an illusion with a chess master inside. "From 1770 until its destruction by fire in 1854 it was exhibited by various owners as an automaton, though it was eventually revealed to be an elaborate hoax.[1] Constructed and unveiled in 1770 by Wolfgang von Kempelen (1734-1804) to impress the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria" John then built his version in 1984 over a 5 year period. It does use the original chess board which wasn't stored where the fire was. His version is a computer running a chess program. So he was actually doing a magic trick on that one for us.
