Well, the running video I had planned got put on hold as the ground was soaking from a night of rain. So instead I thought I'd have another go in front of the camera. What could go wrong? 😅 In this video I'll give you a brief overview of the Kyosho Legendary Series 2WD buggies, similarities, differences and what I think of them (short answer: get one if you can! 😁)
Apologies for the clunky presentation and the constant exposure shifts in the background! 🤦🏼‍♂️
As always, thanks for watching.
More details on the buggies:
Scorpion has HG Shocks, carbon suspension stays, universals, black electronics box and black wheels. It runs a 1060 Hobbywing, Le Mans 490 and stock gearing.
Turbo Scorpion is completely stock mechanically, optional LEDs, 1060 and Le Mans 490.
Tomahawk is also stock, 1060 and Le Mans 490.
Ultima has gold shock upgrade, universals, 1060 and a Kyosho G15 Single 15T Brushed Motor.

I prefer the look of the scorpions and their open cockpit design. They look more realistic and scale as I own an actual off road buggy that was built in the 1980s and it looks very much like the scorpion buggies. My full scale has a Chenowth frame, 2200 V.W. motor, disk brakes, power rack and pinion steering, turning brakes, etc. It’s old school and it’s a blast in the desert or sand.

Great video. From what I know, the Beetle and Scorpion both came out in 1982, then the Tomahawk in 1983/84, followed by the Turbo Scorpion in 1985 and the Ultima in 1987, so the 2WD lineage kind of does make sense. Love the Legendary Series and really enjoy watching your videos!

Great to have this comparison, just what I have been looking for. Any tips on accurately setting up the steering for the Turbo Scorpion (and most likely the other two)?
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No real tips, but be careful when setting up the front suspension and make sure everything is lined up and positioned properly. On the Turbo Scorpion watch for the tires rubbing on the trailing arms at full lock. The steering rod goes through a rubber cover for dust protection, which can make later adjustments a little tricky. I did find that with my Futaba servo in neutral and the steering rod length set to specs I needed to use quite a bit of trim to get it to run straight.

These are sweet looking cars. I just picked up a set of wheels like you show on your blue Tomahawk. They looked cool, brand new and were only $15 so I grabbed them thinking the rear wheels would have a hex configuration. Unfortunately I don't own a Kyosho but I assume the rear is at least hex. Maybe the tires I got are for RC planes or something but they sure look exactly the same as what you have on the Tomahawk. I like the design of these cars and 2wd are fun to drive. Awesome.
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC Жыл бұрын
The Tomahawk and Scorpion rear wheels don't use a hex fitting I'm afraid. They're held in place by friction. So the wheels you have are probably genuine Tomahawk wheels. You may be able to use the wheels by fitting the Kyosho friction pad set up in place of your hex adapter. The part is Kyosho #SC234 "Drive Washer Set". You can also get the Tomahawk manual from the Kyosho homepage if you'd like to see more details and part numbers. Thanks! 👍

Thanks for the chat - really useful if you're planning on getting one of these. I'm just building the optima mid. I'm 1 yr in to the hobby and i race nitro and electric touring cars. So the offroad scene is new to me. Is the 2WD experience worth it? I'm going to run my Optima Mid for a bit but I can see myself eventually trying the Javelin or the Scorpion Turbo. What do you reckon?

Great comparison David. Kyosho's done a great job with all of these. Metal parts, ball bearings, high gear settings. Okay they cost more than a Tamiya model, but put all these extras into a Tamiya and you had beaten the Kyosho price by far. And then you don't even have reached the speed performance of a Kyosho. All shown buggies are great, although I have to admid the Turbo Scorpion is still my favorite.

This is an excellent video.I also stick to nimh.And this is where most modern rc builders differ.I like the simplicity of nimh charging and running 80's buggies for half an hour instead of the seven minutes we used to get on nicads.I dont need the hassle of lipo balancing.I built a turbo scorpion, but found original wheels and body,so it looks like an original.Better quality than a tamiya.But don't get me wrong.You should still buy a brat or frog.They are awesome too.Oh and a sport tuned of course.I also run an orion vortex ddrive 3000 kv integrated esc and motor and it is faster than a sport tuned and a hidden gem of a motor/esc combo.It runs well on nimh.So if you want a screamer,go for the orion vortex.No im not sponsored by them.Ha Ha .

Lovely cars mate. Why don't you use lipo out of curiosity?
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 5 ай бұрын
Various reasons really. As a casual user, I felt I didn't really need the extra power lipo offered. At the time of recording I mostly ran alone at the park, so the drawbacks of lipo were not worth the extra performance gains. When heading out to the park (or wherever) I'd have to charge the batteries before leaving the house, but I would not know until I arrived at the location if I would be able to run. The park might be too busy, the grass too tall etc. Many times I would not be able to find a suitable place to run. It was quite frustrating at times! In such instances, I could leave the nimh in a charged stay until the following day/weekend, but that wouldn't be good for a lipo. As I almost aways ran alone, there wasn't any need for the extra performance lipo offered. Also, most of the re-releases have suspension (springs, damper oil, pistons etc) set up for heavier nicad and nimh packs. Lipo being much lighter can sometimes adversely affect their handling. I found that older Tamiya designs in particular seemed to drive better with the extra weight. Of course, the best option would be to retune the dampers for the lighter lipo packs. Since then I began running at a local circuit. For circuit use lipo, but I still keep my old nimh packs for whenever I'm running in the park. 👍

Hi, great video, recently bought the beetle, I love it , I have upgraded the wheels to alloy turbo scorpion ones , would like to upgrade the shocks as well, find the back sags a bit to much even after adjusting the pre load, do you know if the shocks from the turbo scorpion would fit? Any help is much appreciated 👍
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 3 ай бұрын
The Turbo Scorpion shocks are slightly larger than the Scorpion/Beetle ones and make a nice upgrade. However, they are designed to mount to the Turbo Scorpion shocks stays (#SC251 and #SC252) which are taller than the stock Beetle ones (#SC208 & #SC211). Depending on your preference, you could use internal spacers to limit the length of the Turbo Scorpion. I haven't done the mod myself, but looking at the buggies the only issue you might have is clearance between the Beetle body and the shocks at the front.

Hi Kai, Great videos on these classic rc buggies. I have th opportunity to get a few and I was thinking of getting one 2wd and one 4wd. I'm leaning towards the Turbo Scorpion for my 2wd but mixed on the 4wd. I have a nice track in my backyard woods, which has two sweeping, banked turns, a couple of s-turns but it only has one jump so I'm torn between the mid-Optima and the Javelin. Any advice? Thank you. John
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC Жыл бұрын
They're both great! The Mid has the prestige, the racing pedigree and arguably better performance. But the Javelin is the better looking of the two, is a joy to build and is my favorite of the 4WD's. It also has a much more retro feel, with the option of chain drive and, of course, a driver figure. 😁 They're all superb, so my advice would be just go with the one you like the look of the most! 👍

Great comparison David. Thanks. I just got a Turbo Scorpion after watching your videos. Did you have any issues with the front Swing Arm Pivot Bar fixing it in the right place? @KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 4 ай бұрын
Yes, getting that part to line up is tricky. After building several I've found that the best approach is to slow tighten the screws on either side of the block little by little. Also, don't be tempted to over tighten them to bring the block flush against the chassis rail. A small gap is fine. Tighten them too far and the thread will strip. (don't ask how I know 😅) And finally, I've only ever managed to get it exactly on the middle mark twice. Every other time was slightly out. I've not noticed any difference in how the suspension works. To be honest, I really don't think it matters as long as it's not way out. Good luck with the build. 👍 Oh, and don't forget the thread lock.

I believe the differences you are noticing with the Turbo Scorpion, are changes made for the legendary series re-release, the original didn't have the same wheels, and I suspect it didn't have the hex wheel adapters either; whereas Kyosho kept the regular Scorpion and Tomahawk more similar to the originals.

Besides several Tamiyas I also have Kyosho's Scorpion and the Javelin, both new releases. I'm thinking of getting the Turbo Scorpion too as I'm curious about its handling compared to the earlier Scorpion. Is there much difference in driving? Also you mention that the Tomahawk feels different from Scorpion, in what way? The physical difference would be the battery position, and something else?
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on where you run. I don't notice a huge difference in performance between the Scorpion and Turbo Scorpion. The Turbo is more stable, especially during cornering on rougher ground. A more advanced driver on a track would probably notice the benefits more. I think tires play a huge part, and on grass the Scorpion's rear tires offer a lot more traction than those fitted to the Turbo. The Tomahawk is lighter than the others, and it is noticeable. With most of the weight towards the rear, the Tomahawk has way better traction off the line. It beats out all of the the others (they all use the exact same motor, gearing, ESC and battery) . But with so little weight up front, it suffers a lot more from understeer. That is despite the fact that the Tomahawk can get some pretty extreme steering angle too! 😁 Changing the front tires to a softer compound helped.

Is the Beetle a friction rear wheel setup, and shorter like the original.... or hex and longer/wider like a Turbo Scorpion?
@KaiCityRC

The Beetle uses friction fittings like the Scorpion/Tomahawk. Only the Turbo Scorpion has the larger wheels, wider track etc. But you can buy the Hex Adapter (Kyosho Hex Driver Washer Set SCW020) if you'd like to use hex wheels. Personally, while the larger wheels of the T. Scorpion look great, I really do like the vintage look of the smaller diameter Scorpion/Tomahawk wheels and tires.

I picked up both the moment they went on sale. 😊 I wasn't in any hurry to build either as I was thinking they would (rarity for me) end of shelf queens. Well, that what was I thought. However, I'm planning to enter the Vintage Class in this year's G Force Competition Cup, so I figured I'd build one and enter it. I went with the JJ, though I suspect the majority of entrants this year will opt to run the 870C (including Masami Hirosaka!). The Mid you do get quite a few upgrades, and the price isn't too far off a standard Mid. The JJ however, I feel is way over priced for what it is. Most of the cost comes from the (excellent) carbon chassis, but the rest is pretty much standard Ultima (plus options) and a few other unique parts. But even over here, it retails at almost double the cost of the other 2WD Legendary Series buggies.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these 2 RC's. I'm tempted to get the JJ Ultima though. I like the carbon chassis instead of the regular semi tub. It gives you more space to put your electronics in. I also like the gold shocks instead of the black and the neon colored wheels. Do you think it'll be difficult if I'll just buy the regular Ultima and add all the upgrades of the JJ Ultima (is it hard to find these upgrades in the market) ?

That would all depend on a few factors. How much like the JJ kit would you want your converted Ultima to be? The most expensive component (by far) is the carbon chassis, but you'd also need the upgraded gold shocks, the spring kits for those shocks, the ball diff, universals, shock stays, motor guard, wheels, Tomahawk body, Decal set, JJ wing set, battery tray, servo mount etc etc. You can download the pdf manuals for both buggies from Kyosho and get an idea of what would be needed. Using the normal Ultima's gear diff, rear wing and silver motor guard in a conversion would help to reduce the overall cost. It can be done, but whether if it worth it or not is something you would have to decide. Note: the 60th anniversary laser etched motor guard is not available to purchase separately.

May I ask what size pinion your using with the le mans 490 motor?
@KaiCityRC

Sure. I’m using the 31T pinion for a ratio of 6.9:1. It seems to work well with the 30T Le Mans motor. 👍

@@KaiCityRC Thank you! I'm just starting my Tomahawk build and wanting to try to stay within the kyosho line of motors but they seem very hard to find at a reasonable price compared to other brands here in the US. I could go with a vintage motor yet even some of those are pricey and not sure what condition your really buying. I'm hoping to find a Le mans 490 to keep it new and simple. I don't plan on running this hard at all since it's such a nice kit.

The 490 is a little expensive, but it’s a lovely looking motor and a perfect match for the vintage series. 👍
