Last of the self sufficient pioneers that managed to survive in a true wilderness. Adopted a life style of thousands of pioneers that settled the west, his children could not have attended school and the family received little or no medical care. There meals had to be simple and repetitive and they had to endure the winter rain storms that lasted for days at a time; a tough life to live but they managed. Going all the way to the Supreme court defending his Homestead is amazing when you consider he had to go across the country in crude transportation of those days to argue his case, hard to believe, but he did it.
