I had a teacher in the 6th grade who was the greatest educator I've ever met. I knew from our first meeting that he was a straight shooter and he saw the spark in my eye when I was entertaining people. He used to let me draw funny comic strips on the back of my homework, which pushed me to actually take initiative. Counselors, therapists, no one could understand why Christopher had no drive, no academic interest, and dismal respect for authority. Mr. Ramsey spoke to me for 20 minutes and had me all figured out. There's people out there like him who remind me of Robin's characters. People who inspire me to be fearless. Those people rarely get to be as famous as Robin Williams, but to the ones they affect, they're superheroes

I think Keating makes an interesting point here. Can the value in a poem be measured by the metrics defined by Dr Pritchard? Alternatively, is poem's value greater than the sum of its parts? If so, a linear measurement system like the one he describes will fail because some poems that score poorly on one or more metrics may in fact hold enormous value. I'm reminded of Picasso who famously said: "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child." Should we teach our youth to walk in the footprints of the greats who preceded them and hope that those who have sufficient passion for the topic to take it up as a career will still have enough courage and creativity left break out of the mold? Is everyone able to break away from the mold? The answer to that is probably no - at least not in the fashion that the likes of Picasso achieved since that requires genius. Schopenhauer best defined genius in his quote: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see." A poem written by a talented poet will probably measure quite well against Pritchard's metrics. A poem written by a genius will fail in one or more of Pritchard's metrics but will be so revolutionary and powerful in its method of expression that it'll give birth to a whole new genre. Given the extreme rarity of geniuses (in the true sense of the word rather than the sense used - or misused - by the modern media), teaching Pritchard's rules will do little harm. Just make sure that the students are also enjoying the poetry and make the poem come to life for them (as Keating tried to do). If a poetry teacher is sufficiently inspirational that his/her students are still reading poetry in their own private capacity many years after having graduated from the class, then that teacher will be able to rank themselves at the very peak of their profession.

John Keating : "Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all." This is no longer taught anywhere, today our children learn to be nice obedient consumers, no one dares to think for themselves.

Jesus, when I watch this movie I realise how useless 'secondary' education is largely to most kids. I was bored shitless all day at school, and was so depressed by the end? I was just numb and confused. English and music where the only subjects that did ANYTHING for me, the rest? I can honestly say, a huge waste of time. People shouldn't feel that way about their education. Bored? Kids won't learn anything under those conditions.

But at the same time, i loved physics, finding out how the world works, playing with lasers and shit. Yeah there were some dud classes, but mostly they were due to dud teachers.

There was only one Robin Williams. He came across the Hollywood sky like a meteor, and then was gone. "Good Will Hunting" showed us all that he was. For us Vietnam veterans, his "Good Morning Vietnam" told the story of what a mess that was. The great ones come and go too quickly. Robin Williams was a Great One!

You’re wrong. This movie is a very clear symbol of private schools, like Eton, where right wing adults are raised eg. David Cameron, Boris Johnson, George Osbourne etc. It is set in an all boys school in a time where there were very little ethnic minority students. Many leftists will recognise this as a brilliant opposition to private schools and an opposition of the type of students they often create.
