I understand why Keaton doesn't do interviews. Everything he sings is a beautiful insight to his heart. But I really do wish his fans would not pressure him into anything. Like the rest of us, he's human. If this is a message of the end, allow this to be the end. We've had a beautiful few years and everything comes to a close.

If you play the song in reverse you can hear "I'm just going outside and may be some time" repeated at the end (beginning when you reverse it). These are the final words of the antarctic explorer Capt Lawrence Oates as he left the tent. His death was seen as a self sacrifice because his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival. I'm not sure what this means but, it's certainly interesting.

There's a poem written about the line, which it's repeated four times. (I'm not sure how many times it's repeated in the song) But the poem writes of Capt Lawrence Oates' very English-gentlemanly goodbye (forever in that case). Which I suppose Keaton might be doing...
@lea23333
@lea23333 7 жыл бұрын
There's also a painting by John Charles Dollman titled A Very Gallant Gentleman which refers to Oates. I'm wondering if the line "The cold deep in my bones" is another nod to Oates in the song. Oates walking out into the cold was an act of self sacrifice, but in Keaton's case making music has been the act of self-sacrifice. Having to open up so many wounds and share them with the world, not to mention the anxiety of performing.
@Opie222
@Opie222 7 жыл бұрын
Here is the poem. ‘I am just going outside and may be some time.’ The others nod, pretending not to know. At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime. He leaves them reading and begins to climb, Goading his ghost into the howling snow; He is just going outside and may be some time. The tent recedes beneath its crust of rime And frostbite is replaced by vertigo: At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime. Need we consider it some sort of crime, This numb self-sacrifice of the weakest? No, He is just going outside and may be some time In fact, for ever. Solitary enzyme, Though the night yield no glimmer there will glow, At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime. He takes leave of the earthly pantomime Quietly, knowing it is time to go. ‘I am just going outside and may be some time.’ At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime. - Derek Mahon This is what I think: He sacrificed his life (creating music and now possibly stopping) so that we may have a better chance of surviving through life. I think having to pull along with him the weight of his depression and anxiety to give us music has come to a point where he can't do it anymore. He needs a chance to breathe, and maybe, "In fact, forever." (I use "possibly" and "maybe" in hopes that I am wrong.) I love his music and will miss him greatly.

Oh god..... i hadnt understood the song as a goodbye... I'm feeling so sad all of a sudden... I saw him live in february and i can say his concert was one of the most beautiful and trully felt experience of my life, he is an amazing artist but i can see how much this affects him. It is like a curse, loving what you do cuz it keeps you going and gives a meaning to your existence but at the same time kills you slowly. The beauty about art is that it is about feelings and meanings and human nature and trying to express in other ways what it is so hard to express with simple words, but how to do it in this empty and capitalistic world when the only important things are the rankings and the sellings... the meaning get lost half way and i'm sure he knows this... We are all cowards hiding behind his music, because he is not afraid to scream what we are so scared to whisper... Why are we so afraid of feelings? of being vulnerable? of being weak? of asking and giving love? of being sad? what are we so scared of?...... Keaton, you are a beautiful soul, so deep as to drown in yourself, but you know we are not, we are the surface. so you sing it to us in raw words, just to see if maybe, just maybe it will get to us... so we don't have to guess or read between lines... This is my cry to you, stay... stay a little longer, keep on singing all our feelings with your simple words so we wont feel alone, so we wont feel like we are the only ones. keep on filling our hearts with your "and's" and "the's". Grow up with us Keaton.

I listened to the song and it felt sad but I didn't cry. Then I made my mother listen and told her the best part of the whole video were the comments left on it. I made the mistake of translating your comment to her and it was so good it made her cry which, in turn, made me cry. You managed to put into words everything that Mr Henson's music makes me feel. The sadness, the hope, the love...it was all in your comment so thank you for leaving it and allowing me to have such a moment with my mother.
@sillage5409
@sillage5409 7 жыл бұрын
It is kind of funny, you know? cuz when i left the comment i didnt feel like it explained at all what i feel about his music or mostly what he express with it... it is too deep as to be confusing, it reach the core of every feeling and therefore arrives to the core of yours , where everything is too dark to be understood, not dark because it is bad, but because it is so deep, the distillation of everythig: sadness, anxiety, fear, hope, love, loneliness, anger, everything hidden behind a little smile or a joke just to make it look like it is nothing. The less you feel, the more human you are, but shouldn't it be the other way around? what characterize humans are the feelings. So, I think listening to his music sometimes is hard, because he is so direct about showing his heart and thoughts that I get confused. Do other people really feel like that? I'm so used of pretending that i dont have feelings and other people neather. Im glad the comment reach you and your mother, and hopefully it will also reach keaton as all the other comments, just so he knows that he is not alone. I hope he doesnt feel alone.
@Lullayable
@Lullayable 7 жыл бұрын
It would be sad, wouldn't it ? For him to feel alone when his music makes us feel so understood. Like someone is there to share all the feelings with us. I understand what you mean about how hard listening to his music can be. Because it touches feelings we don't really want to touch, I think it's the reason why his music makes me cry even though I don't really understand every nuance. In a world here being sensitive is not a good thing, it's hard to admit that something as abstract as music can hurt. I think that if anything, his music should teach us to be braver about feelings because there's nothing wrong with feeling, it's what makes us human. And that should be celebrated.

Keaton, you have no idea who I am, nor will you ever probably know.. However you have honestly helped me through some of the toughest times in my life so far.. Your music resonates with something inside me not even science can fathom. On the days I cant get out of bed, where I can barely breathe.. your music is a breath of fresh air, almost like an asthma inhaler, somewhat like these pills doctors force down your throat to keep living in this seemingly meaningless world. Expect the feelings your music provokes in me are true, unlike all these other masks we are forced to wear.. I hope you know, the impact your music and you as a whole have on so many of us who are struggling with so many diverse issues.. Honestly, whenever I see something new from you, it makes me jump up a little, feel a bit more alive in this sadistic world we live in. You are a voice for so many that have no voice, or are to afraid to express it. I hope you continue to make music, to express yourself with us all, but I understand if you cannot.

"I'm just going outside. I may be some time" This is what he says in reverse around 5:10. From what I can discern these are the last words of someone named "Lawrence Oates". He was on an expedition on the Ross ice shelf in Antarctica with several other people. Fate had deemed that many of them died, Lawrence being one of the more unfortunate. Finding himself riddled with gangreen and frost bite he realized that in his state he was a liability and detriment to his friends and their chances of survival. He made a final decision to walk out of his tent to certain death in the icy winds. "I'm just going outside. I may be some time." Lawrence knew his chances of survival were low. He also understood that leaving would raise the odds, if even slightly, for those he cared for. So he left, and to make sure no one worried he lied. Goodbye Keaton We love you We forgive you We won't forget you

Keaton’s music makes me feel really independent when I’m sad or angry and feel like I need someone to help me. After listening to him I feel like I can carry on alone.

hey, is it only me wondering if Keaton will ever read some of our comments? If he will I would love to say him that we love him! ❤ and his music can change something in our lives and that's the real power of his sensibility.

I identify with your music because it's full of emotions really difficult to express, in my particular case I have a broken heart since a few months waiting that all the love that I know I can give someday it will be received and accept again and, maybe those days where the life was more beautiful come back to me and finally I can leave behind all this sadness and emptiness that I feel in this present. When I listen your music is like if someone understand this tortuous path and translate it in each musical note. Keep going, this is not a goodbye, all of us need you, your music is very special.

Usually new Keaton tracks take a while to grow on me, and they typically do so much that I listen to frequently. This track clicked immediately. It is very powerful on all fronts. The best component is how it seems to mix compositional and production elements from much of his past works. So soothing and melancholy. I don't see how this could be the end, he stills needs to come back to NYC :)

Before I knew of Olafur Arnalds I listened to Keaton Henson to help channel the more somber and graceful aspects of my musical soul. I would love to see these 2 men collaborate. They live on similar musical planes IMO.
