I had PF several years ago and tried every orthotic, stretch and exercise imaginable with no relief. What finally worked was losing about 30 lbs and buying better supportive shoes.

I love Keen boots. I wore Merrill for years, but the Keens are significantly better. I chose the Keen ventilated hiking boot (Voyageur) as I found the waterproof lining of all boots leak in time and it causes my feet to sweat. The breathable boot is certainly not waterproof, but I rarely need a waterproof boot, so I am willing to hike with damp feet once in a while. I hike mostly in the Southwest on rock so I go through a pair of boots each year, but the Keens are the most comfortable boot I have ever worn (I am 72 and have tried many different brands). I believe the large toe box is a key to the comfort of Keen boots. They are simply shaped more closely to the way our feet our shaped.

The two best boots I’ve owned were Keen and Redwing and both lasted exceptionally well and fit perfectly. The Redwings I have now are pretty much the same as the Keens you had in your review, I’m on year six now and although I need to replace them soon, it’s entirely because of far too many miles on urban sidewalk and pavement and zero maintenance on my part. I’ve been back and forth on those two brands for a very long time, had 2 pairs of keens I think, and this is my third pair of Redwings. All I would say, is I would never again order keens online, I’ll only buy them in person after trying them. With Redwings I found the online shopping with regards to reliable sizing far more reliable. That said, have found very little negative about either. And both companies were able to supply me with a very hard to find sizing which most companies cannot. I think I’ll go Redwing again but I’m also considering a little heavier model next time, and possibly more traditional materials and skip the goretex or goretex-like liner.

Right on. I always try my shoes on before buying if I can. For my winter boots by Keen, I ended up ordering them online. I bought two pair with a different size so I could return one pair. Even then, I could see differences between the boots. Thanks for commenting Randal

Great review, Mark! While my background is different than yours, I have and continue to do a lot of walking. It is very much worth going the extra mile to get the best possible footwear as it can make or break your walking experiences. I am thinking about checking out what law enforcement and armed forces wear as the terrain they maneuver through, wearing their considerable gear would demand a good boot that keeps their feet comfortable, protected, and sure-footed. Quality socks are a part of the equation, especially in a good wool/synthetic blend. If the products selected leave my feet comfortable at the end of the day with no signs of callus formation, I have a winner on my feet. Thank you!

Hi, Mark, I just got back from a 274 mile long hike on the Appalachian Trail. Most of the hikers out to do long stretches are wearing trail runners, because they are lighter on the feet and cooler in hot weather. Most of the models that are worn are not waterproof, either, which is logical with a low-cut shoe which might be immersed in deep puddles on a wet trail. I wore Altra trail runners, which I tried a few years ago because they mimic the shape of the average foot (as if there's such a thing). I started out with a broken in pair of Superiors, which, unfortunately, do not have deep lugs, so I slipped a lot in mud. I replaced them at mile 136.9, after slipping and falling on my backpacking guitar (undamaged, thankfully) with a pair of Lone Peaks, with a more substantial tread. I also use orthotic inserts, but mine are over the counter Powerstep brand, and one pair made the whole trip. For habitual longer distance hikers, boots get to feeling heavy, and use more of your energy than trail runners. For weekend hikers, in rough terrain, on unmaintained trails, boots might be a better option. One thing to note: In prolonged rain, days at a time without the means to dry gear, waterproof footwear will get wet inside from water running down your legs, unless rain pants (uncomfortably hot in warm weather) are worn, and, personally, Gore-Tex and other liners don't breathe appreciably, despite the advertising hype, and sweaty feet blister easily. I, therefore, wear breathable footwear which dries quickly. Fwiw, I have never injured an ankle with the exception of a scrape or two, since switching from boots around the turn of the century until now, while wearing trail runners, though I have always had a tendency to turn my ankles outwards. Keen makes some great footwear, and I have tried some of their low top hikers, but they gave me heel blisters. My heels are unusually blocky, and my feet are very flexible, so a more flexible shoe works for me. Good presentation, as usual, of an excellent product, and a thumbs-up for you mentioning that what works for your feet and your walking lifestyle might not work for others. When I use a chainsaw, for instance, I will wear my leather boots! 😊 👍👍✌

@MarkYoungBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
Wow. sounds like an amazing trip. Yes, I can see how a through hiker and/or UL hiker would want to go with a running shoe. I would like to find some non-waterproof show that fits as it would dry faster then these goretex type of boots. Mostly, I am not bothered by that as it rarely gets that hot here and I am not in really wet areas either. Thanks for commenting

The review is ostensibly of the Keen Targhee II boot, but the boot displayed is actually the Targhee III. The comments about the sole being a bit lightweight are accurate about the Targhee III; the Targhee II has a bit heavier sole with more cushioning and a significantly different lug pattern. The lacing is also different. Good review of the Targhee III, but mis-labeled as Targhee II.

I feel the pain, never had cortisone for the plantar fasciitis, just physical therapy and regular stretching. I understand about getting the correct fit- I wear orthotics and still need firm soles that provide real support, but also provide cushioning. I tried Keen's years ago and now wear Danner's, Asolo-mig height, or Karrimor sneakers. I used the Danner's (leather or canvas) for working in the woods and the Asolo's for some work and hiking general use. Aging bodies require care. Thanks for a review from someone who used their feet.

Great info, Mark. I first wore my Danner on a hunting trip in my 28th year, and been in love with them ever since. However as I will be 60 in a few years time, I am finding out Danners are youngman's shoes. They are great boots but this guy has become too old, worn out, and fat to get the maximum use out of them. I will be needing a few pairs of new shoes. I will give the Keens a look. Thank you, Mark.

Thanks Mark. I have owned Keen sandals for years and they have worn very well. I have worked outdoors my whole life and have NEVER gotten more than 1½ years out of a pair of mid hiking boots. 90% of that time was in the woods doing trail work, etc. I have very wide feet at the toe box and there are few manufacturers that provide me the width I need. Recommending boots us quite subjective. I loved my Targhee IIs for the reasons you didnt like them. Unfortunately both soles came unglued after 5 months. In the summer I where Altra trail runners and absolutely love them.

I started watching this video in search of a light hiking boot with a stiff sole. As soon as I saw how flexible they were that was a no go for me. I have a pair of Keens that are similar and I find them way too soft even for day hiking with a light pack. Otherwise, I own four pairs of Keens, one of which is a winter boot, which are great for everyday wear around town.

Great video Mark. Thanks and also thanks for your service as a policeman. I have a few questions (1) You mention that you would go for a more rugged model.. would that be Targhee 3 boot? (2) I wear a 11 Targhee 3 Oxford. Would I stay with size 11 for Targhee 3 boots too? (3) For winter/snow is it better to stay with the waterproof boot and use a nice woolen socks or go with their snow boot model? If I do not go with the snow boot (that can only be used in winter) (4) I have used Keen for years but never tried their wide version.. Would that be too wide or better for wearing a woolen socks? Thanks
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft Жыл бұрын
I can answer some of your questions but not all. Yes, I am looking at the Targhee 3 mid-boot as my next warm weather hiker as I find my current boot is a bit thin in the sole and I feel the rocks under my feet. I did go with the next size up for the Revel 3 for my winter boots as I usually wear thicker wool socks in them. It is hard for me to advise you on sizing as each boot model may have a different fit and each person a different boot. In addition, my feet have changed over the years and I wear corrective orthotics that take up some space in the boots. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks for commenting
