You very smart not to pull guard from the beggining, as i believe Santana would have passed with a lilttle more gas and time. Strategy is also a big part of this game. Great fight! Congrats

What's the point of sport BJJ? What does it even measure? Two guys stalling, one gets taken down then gets right back up. So what did those two arbitrary points measure?

bjjsalzberry13 So what's your argument? an appeal to superiority. Wow, you are a tough guy, thus you must be correct. Thing is, you have no argument. Competition is good regardless of rules. The players develop towards the rules, but they still develop. Any JuJutsuka would argue that Submissions Only is the best system. What I am arguing is that the point system is stupid and means nothing. If you can't finish your opponent, it doesn't mean shit. In Judo or Wrestling points are based on the quality of the goal, a takedown. A good quality takedown gets an Ippon or five points respectively. But in JuJutsu, there is no such thing as a low quality or high quality submission, it's either a yes or a no and nothing in between. So points don't make sense. It's only use is to ensure a winner and loser so the tournament moves on. That's it. But if that's the case, then the entire sport is plain ass stupid. I hate sport BJJ, it's really the most boring shit out there. Only matches where the two players actually go all out are worth watching. And those are few and far between.

Where did I appeal to superiority?? You asked what the point of sport BJJ is. Points make sense because points reflect control. If I sweep you, pass your guard, and get mount I have just shown a lot of control over you; something that can be measured by points. If IBJJF let black belts do all submissions (Heel hooks, cervical cranks, etc) it would be a lot more exciting because certain positions would change. You can't have submission only matches because an IBJJF tournament may take 2 weeks to run all the brackets. Points allow you to cut down on the length of a match. You can do a 16 man bracket at blackbelt in 2.5 hours versus 7.5 for typical 30 minute submission only match (which still doesn't guarantee a submission.) Obviously a point system and shorter time limits can make people not take as much risk, and it seems a good number of people will enter tournaments to not lose which creates stalling. But that doesn't mean sport BJJ is trash. If anything go out there and compete and make it exciting. Then post your video and I will comment and say what a great match that is. Go to a local tournament and I will guarantee if there are six mats on the floor at least one of them will have an exciting match. As a wrestling coach I can say I have seen my fair share of boring wrestling matches but that will happen in any sport. It is about the 2 competitors out there, their mindset, what they are feeling from their opponent, etc. that makes it boring, not the sport itself

bjjsalzberry13 You had made a bet I had never competed. In other words, you were challenging me, which is besides the point of my discussion. First, we agreed that point BJJ is for expediency. That's what I had written. I don't like it, as I think it doesn't represent anything. For example, Eddie Cummings v Garry Tonon at EBI 3. Eddie in a point system would have smashed Garry, yet Garry won by submission. So no. I don't agree with positional points. They are garbage. The point system doesn't even represent real life applied JuJutsu. For example, many MMA player prefer staying in side control rather than go to mount, yet in point system BJJ mount has more points. Same with taking the back. In Pride FC, guys like Shogun would intentionally take North-South just to knee the opponents to the head, yet North-South doesn't get any points in sport BJJ. And obviously, I don't need to mention the unanimously agreed stupid issues like advantages and 50/50 stuff. I don't understand why every big tournament has to be expedient. Let them take their time. In Tennis, it takes them a pretty long time to declare a real winner. And the winner is truly the best of that tournament. There is almost zero controversy to any winner in Tennis. We wanna see the best do their thing, so let them. One of the reasons Sport Judo deviated from it's original system is because of TV ratings. Old school matches lasted for hours sometimes. So they, just as boxing before them, adopted a point system with rounds. Yet in JuJutsu, it doesn't make sense, as I mentioned, there is no measurement of the quality of submission. It's on or off. In terms of local matches, I believe if the authorities running the shows wanted to adopt a submission only tournament, it would be possible. Here are some ideas. Run a 5 minute match, and if neither win, they must play a sudden death 3 minute extra time. If A & B in the brackets have a tie, and X & Y had a tie in the same brackets, let A play X and B play Y. No one goes up until a winner is declared. If they keep on getting draws, say after two or three matches, then all of them are dropped. Dropped because stalling isn't the absolute objective in BJJ, submissions are. Obviously this system which I am suggesting very much favors offensive BJJ which isn't the whole system as defense is a big part, but it's better than stupid arbitrary points. These aggressive small tournaments would be feeders for the big tournaments with open time limits for the top 16 players. Now that we are cordial in our discussion. Let me know what you think.

I respect the hell out of both fighters but sport BJJ sucks. The fact that one of these guys “won” 2-0 does not demonstrate that either guy applied any dominance over the other. This was not enough time to determine a winner and why should the takedown have any more emphasis that the relentless passing pressure Murillo displayed. These matches should continue until submission or one gets 10 or 12 points, but 2-0 is a joke. Like o said though, I really like and respect both practitioners
