Thank you. Great tips. I have had good luck with plants in koi ponds by putting them in pots drilled with holes then just hang them on the edge of the pond so they are all but a 1/4 covered. All the grasses, poi plants, and some bamboos seem to flurish. That might also prevent Herons when they are all grown over.

I literally, just then, while this video was playing in the background, looked out the window to see yet another one of my fish get swallowed up. Its an old square pool about five meters by three meters, that's been remade into a working pond with its own natural ecosystem. Floating islands with plants (both surface and underwater). We love it. But the platform running around the pond (where you would sit and keep your feet in, if it were a pool) provides the heron with a spot to just wait for them to surface. We have minor birds and magpies that chase him off a lot of the time, but the prick is ballsy and always comes back for an easy feed. I don't know what to do, I've already lost biggie, bitey, kanye, goldie, chino and duck. NO MORE! I literally run out my door, chasing it with a broom and the arsehole just comes back after five minutes have passed. Appreciate your time putting this up and will try and do what I can to better my foe.

Beautiful pond and koi! After losing too many fish to the GBH I've added most of the measures you talk about. Scarecrow motion sprinkler, fake owl, fake heron, netting 7" above the pond and recently installed Ikea mirrors on the fence next to the pond, to scare the GBH by it's reflection. So far, so good.

Nice pond. Just one little tip if I may. About your heron statue. As you say, a heron will keep checking on your pond and if they see the heron statue in the same place every time they do realize it's not real. it does pay to move it around on a regular basis.Terry.

I have lost Koi and other fish to Herons, Raccoons and Possums. I asked my local pond store in Laguna Beach, CA and they told me to use the Fido Shock electric fence. It's been 9 years without anymore losses since I installed it around my pond perimeter. I have a 5x9 ft pond with 4 beautiful Koi now. One is huge because she was allowed to live so long. Others died due to low breeding quality and I have since bought new more expensive ones. I stopped adding Goldfish, Ryukin & Shebunkins, they are messy and carry diseases from Pet Stores.

Thank you for the tips. We have a koi pond and lost two of our seven last weekend to probably a heron. We live within 150 feet of a bayou and some retention lakes and heron are in the area. Our fish are just a hair smaller than yours. I went to replace them today and it would cost me 450.00 for two that are the size mine are. Looks like I will start small now....

Beautiful pond and fish, but I have to disagree about the open area herons need to land. I've witnessed herons landing on fences and an arbor in my very small yard and hoping down to the pond. They find a way to get where they want to be.

Thank you for showing us you beautiful pond, it looks so fresh and healthy for your lovely colourful fish, you seem to be getting it right! your survival rate proves it, well done. id love a pond but I know i don't have the skills or any expertise to maintain it and would be very upset if I caused any harm to the fish. I'm happy to watch your fish on you tube and be a very happy, good dog owner. Thankyou again for sharing you wonderful fish pond with us. x

HomeDepot or Hardware Store Sells post. Put 4 Corner Post as tall as you can and add Netting so since Net is high off the Ground it should not be able to Poke Fish, now that Heron found my Pond I keep a lower net tucked under rocks and now a taller Net attached to Corner Post so he can’t get inside. Since he’s coming around more I’m going to add 3 layers of Fishing Wire as a Fence also attached to 4 Post to prevent Egret from walking too close to my Pond. I love my Fish and it would be torture to see them killed!

This is obviously not possible for everyone but what my neighbor started doing for a couple months now is he leaves his beagles out during the day and at night a shepherd/St Bernard mix . There's also several other predators and feral cats in the area that will try to get them as well so the dogs work great

2 Years ago I watched this and was good advice. then A Heron wiped out all my fish. SO I rebuild the pond and sourced a large metal mesh cover, down side it does cover the view but ups ide it ensures the fish safety. Never again will I have a pond thats open. It just a matter of time then before the Heron kills. Neighbor also lost all his the week before. He gave up Koi as he was so devastated.

Brad, had seen plenty of your greenhouse videos, but accidentally found this one while looking for the best heron decoy for my mom's pond. She has a persistent one currently hunting her pond which unfortunately is concrete and slant sided. Unfortunately the lifelike herons that are sold are on the small side 29". Do you know if the color and texture of the heron are important? I was shocked at the quality of your koi, and then you said you used to work in the industry so it made sense.

Ive just had a heron eat at least 8 of my biggest goldfish. I gets its natural and just looking for food but i am gutted. I have a pond next to my house on the south side, a large tree on the west side but openish with room to fly in from the east and a 6ft hedge to the north. I dont want to cover the area with a large net as it is unsightly and discourages other wildlife. I am thinking i may stretch some string across from the tree to a wisteria bush and zig zag it back to the house. With the herons big wingspan and wanting a clear exit, im hoping that this will discourage it. What you think?

I think your video is amazing, as well as your fish (especially the white one with the black stripe). I had a bright yellow German koi -only 3 rows of quarter sized scales on each side) that was taken by a raccoon one year, and it was pregnant. Anyway, we have 23 butterfly koi and one koi. Each is named, tame, etc. I've had the pond for over 8 years now, and never had trouble with heron until this year. I'd always had a statue of one on the edge of my pond, but broke it last year and can't afford another. I guess that means it works. Your pond and plants are beautiful. I'd like to know more about that sprinkler - how to set up the motion detector and keep water supply. Thank you.

very large space to land they do not need, I've proven this today third day in a row its visited first day on the decking so I moved the table second day landed on the table ... added spokes and pots to the table well on the third morning where the first two days it arrieved at 4:34 and 4:35 the next day well today it arrived about 6:05 and landed in a very small space just in front of the table between the tubs it closed its wings very quickly so it could land. I've now added more spikes to the decking and table in the hope it has no space. the first day it attacked the pond for 20 minutes I have netting with 1cm holes and it kept attacking different fish and was not able to take them and the water isn't clear. second day it didnt get a chance to attack as the neighbours cat came out and it flew off. today it wasnt bothered no cat as it arrived later but this time it looked at the pond had a scatched looked at the fence and had another scratch and then flew to the fence and then flew off. I've got a camera that is always on in the garden so I've been able to see whats happening. I lost four fish wednesday with its attacking and another one yesturday and one today I am sure those extras since the attack are due to them being scared of it appearing and suffering shock. I don't have any shelter for the goldfish and have had them for five + years. Until Wednesday we would maybe loose one every year maybe one every two years. Now we've lost six in three days. Bird brains by name.

Great vid, thanks ! Like the sprinkler system, have an old sensor, may try and make my own, though how does it keep pressure ? does it run from the pond water or is it a separate feed ? have a tip for you too. Move your Heron so the carp don't see it. Your getting them use to an outline and shape of a heron, so they could loose there natural fear of them. Also the heron needs to be moved regular too for the real Herons sake. Otherwise they get used to the position being the same and can investigate and uncover our canny work ;)

how do you keep raccoons out?
@cbensch
@cbensch 7 жыл бұрын
Nacho - Raccons are special "fishing" animals. To be able to grab anything from the water, whether it's a pond or brook, they actually need to be in the water. They cannot swim and "fish" at the same time. They need to sit in a few inches of water, support their body with their rear legs, and "fish" with their front hands. If the water is too deep for them to sit in, they simply cannot "fish." Make your banks steep and the water at least 15 inches (30cm) deep and you should not have any problems wit raccoons. My pond is 1000 gallons and two feet deep. in the 4 summers I've had the pond I have never lost a fish to a raccoon.

Hi :) thanks for a great video. I was wondering what you do to keep the water so clean? My dad has a pond at about 3000-3500 liters with a small stream at about 5 meters of gravel and different plants, all to give some good natural filtration of the water. But his pond I always green, and in summer you can only see his fish when they come up to eat.

+Nicolai Christensen - Google a skippy filter. I made a modified one out of a rain barrel. It works great and you never have to clean the filtration system.

Also, I use pillow stuffing as the filter media and put broken up cement blocks to help the water hardness.

I know first hand how heartbreaking it is to come home from work to find your fish out of the pond and half eaten or completely gone. My pond had most of what you discussed to deter these birds but there is also a smaller fisher bird that is even more cunning and helped to eat them. They used to come to the very edge for food when they saw a shadow I guess and that appears to have been how they were fooled into being caught.

If you look at Colleen Penny she’s got four ponds three of them are connected and they are absolutely fabulous she has so many different things that she does from fishing line hanging shiny balls from the trees down low enough that they will scare any bird thinking about coming close
