Satellites constantly intrude on astrophotography. But what if you WANT to keep them in?
The Witch Head Nebula is a notorious spot for geosynchronous satellites. Almost every frame will have satellites passing through. Stacking algorithms make quick work of them, but what if you WANT to keep them in? It’s not straightforward, but I’ve found a workflow in Pixinsight that allows you to have a beautifully processed image AND the satellites that would normally be rejected.

Thanks for watching! Have you ever imaged one of these satellite-heavy regions?

Fascinating! My only experience with high satellite traffic was around the Horsehead nebula region, must be similar geosynchronous satellites.

Great video Nick! Your witch head came out very nice and I liked your procedure for getting the trails put back in. I'll have to try that some day. Appreciate your explanation of geosynchronous sats too :)

Thanks! I wish I was better at animation so I could have explained it that way, but it worked out okay! 😆

Great info, particularly enjoyed the explanation for geosynchronous satellites moving in the frame. Subbed!

Very cool change up to include our civilization's space farers orbiting our tiny planet. Definitely have noticed certain targets are more prone to the "fireflies" above us. Nice new perspective. Thanks Nick! PS: I especially love pixinsight tuts. Yours are great for newbs like me 😊 love the meteor! Love finding things like that!

Neat! It brought be back to my schooldays and struggling through the non-intuitive nature of orbital mechanics.

Indeed! Definitely non-intuitive at first. Have you played Kerbal Space Program? I never really "got" orbital mechanics until I played that and it suddenly made a LOT more sense

Very informative video. I was doing 20min exposures in one part of the sky some months back and in one frame I counted 9 satellite trails! Funny you should mention the meteor and vapour trail because in my latest project I captured 2 meteors on different nights with vapour trails which I don't recall ever seeing in my imaging sessions before so i thought it was pretty cool.

Wow so cool! Yeah with a 20-minute exposure you'd definitely up your chances of capturing one! Have you imaged any geosynchronous regions with that length of exposure? Those would be some wild subframes, almost like a Starlink swarm.

Very cool video Nick! Wasn’t it you who mentioned it like this somewhere (now my preferred way of explaining it)? “With geostationary satellites it is not the satellite traversing through the field-of-view, but the FOV traversing past the satellites”

At 16:40 there is no rounding at all: you have found the precise rotation time of the earth which is 23hours and 56min. The 24hours is the rotation earth time relative to the sun.
@nicolast3499
@nicolast3499 2 жыл бұрын
I was wrong as the calculation is in decimal basis so you actually found 23hours and 33minutes (i was confused by the 56 which is precisely the correct value in minutes). However the correct earth rotation time (relative to space) is 23h and 56min

Yes, an honest mistake, but funny how it ended up being .56 😎
