Like this video. Love the information you shared. I let the male Phidippus Johnsoni jumping spider outside. When I did, it seemed like he wanted back in. The amazing thing about that, was when I looked at him, I also spotted another jumping spider. Not sure what that breed was. It was way smaller in size. I have learned over the years that jumping spiders are in my opinion the most intelligent of the spiders. I know the one I had in the forye' by the front door was. The female, she was a bit more shy. I fully appreciate all information I have learned from your channel, and I admire they type of spiders and reptiles, along with the snakes you keep. Love them all myself. We need them for the life cycle in nature. Thank you, and hope you and everyone has a Safe, Blessed and Wonderful day. ❤😊🕸🕷🕸💯.

I just saw it, so I decided to make a little video with the pictures I have taken of it. The last few were of the other one. Just wanted to show Renée off to anyone who wants to see. Roaming free, it will be. Have a Wonderful day everyone 🤗❤️🕸🕷😍🕷🕸❤️🤗The other one I named Viola after my grandmother...

My first pet spider was a beautiful juvenile female western black widow I found in the bathroom at work. 😂 A year later, I still have her, as well as 2 tarantulas and a wolf spider. Black widows make amazing pets. They're so fascinating to observe, and they provide quite the show at feeding time. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a hardy, low-maintenance spider. They're totally non-aggressive and are not at all inclined to bite, so even though their venom does pack a punch, it's really not something to be overly concerned about. I feel like you'd have to actually TRY to get bitten in order to take a bite.

That's how I got into spider keeping too! I found a black widow when I was working in a vineyard, kept her briefly in a tupperware and fed her flies ( released her back into the wild when I was moving on to a different location). She was so fascinating to watch and beautiful. Now 15 years later I've got my third widow, tarantulas, and a six eyed sand spider on the way!

Everyone in the South grows up looking for recluse spiders and being told to wear gloves when you do stuff in the attic or garage. And that's it. Just don't be stupid, seek medical attention if you get bitten, and that's it. Stay calm. I was actually bitten by a recluse when I was a toddler (obviously I don't remember it), and I have a tiny divot scar on my thumb from it. I was a toddler, and I survived. I have a bigger scar from burning myself on the oven. :p I'm not saying I want one as a pet, because I probably HAVE some in the walls of my apartment already, ha. LOVE them and leave them alone if you don't want to take care of them like Kat does. Just... let people be, man. Kat has feelings and a life. I'm sure you do something that SHE would think was dumb and selfish.

@@nettyjads5620hi I'm from the UK too and just wanted to say we are also getting venomous spiders. Not deadly ones but they can hurt. Near where I live we have some types of funnel web spiders and lots of places now have false widows. I know a few people that have been bitten and they had painful swelling and they ached where they were bitten, but that's it.

@@CyanideSunshines Yeah the Steatoda Noblis False Widow has become very common the last few years with the Warmer Climate. They are a Pest as they are a Invasive Species that has seen a Drastic Decline in the other TWO Native Steatoda Species in the UK. We do get the Scare Mongering about their Venom being Necrotic like the Brown Recluse and Hobo Spiders in the USA. However as with those Spiders the Necrotic Wounds are very rare but can and do Happen.... likely either from a secondary infection or prehapse the Spiders are carrying Bacteria etc. As the Venom alone doesn't have any Necrotic Elements

I'd imagine that's partly because you're more likely to find a careless dog owner than spider owner. Not that I have any concrete evidence of that, but the owners of more unusual pets I've run across seem to just know more about their pet(s)

Ugh. The brown Recluse scares me more thanthe black widow because of their habit of wandering around. I found a young black widow in a box of grapes when I was a produce worker at a Whole foods. How it survived the refrigerated truck and then our cooler I'll never know. But it did so I took it home and kept it as a pet all summer. Full grown she was beautifully glossy black with a fiery red hourglass.

Literally every spider bite seems to be blamed on the brown recluse where I live, and they don't even live here. Glad that you brought up the dog attack statistics. No not at all. The propaganda about "dog attacks" is bullshit. Of course if your dumb child isn't disciplined and abuses the dog, that little demon will be bit. It's called natural instinct. I'd be more concerned and worried about that human child, because, you never know if that "CHILD" will become a rapist or serial killer.

When I was in first grade I had to be hospitalized from a spider bite that turned out to be a brown recluse. Turns out I had rolled over onto one in my sleep and it bit my back. Can't blame the little thing for self defense, and I can attest that there wasn't any rotting or anything. Just vomiting and weakness that I remember. I was bitten by one as a child too. Unfortunately, because of the location of the bite and the fact I was in a waist down bodycast, everyone thought it was a cast sore. And all the symptoms were things common for me to experience after surgery. So mine didn't get treated until it was rotting and I got nerve damage. It was nasty and painful. But I think the worst part was after I found out what it was, I had dreams that spiders were living in my cast...waiting to devour me. Lmfao. But for the most part, people just don't get bitten or if they do, it doesn't get nearly that bad. Especially if you get treatment earlier on. I was just unfortunate.

Primarily because of you, Dave (Dave's Little Beasties), and Tom Moran my dislike of spiders has completely turned around. I've never been phobic, but I would definitely not be very calm if one got on me (not screaming, but there would definitely be at least a little bit of a flail and slap). I am now super interested in them, and I've got five tarantula slings in various stages of growth that I enjoy feeding and watching. They are incredible creatures, and I feel like my life is richer now that I understand them to a (small) degree.

People seem to always hate on what they don't understand. I became a widow owner for the first time back in February and my western black widow girl, Belladonna, is one of my favorite spiders in my collection. She is super chill. Even to the point I've had to coax her to get her food that was dropped in her web. I wouldn't mind owning a brown recluse, but doubt my bf would be okay with that. He wasn't fond of me getting a black widow, but he's became a little more okay with it once he realized she couldn't escape her enclosure. lol

I love this video so much. I work around black widows in my line of work. One thing to mention about them being gentle tho is they are definitely gentle and docile unless they have eggs in their habitat. The mammas are very protective and aggressive and have different instincts than the younger ones without child. Most black widows i come across in my work try to either hide or will sit still if I'm not disturbing them too much. But the mothers definitely show an instinct to protect their eggs. Such wonderful creatures.

Do those people think spiders are like tigers, getting loose and hunting down people? LMAO! Thank you for your content and educating of people. You're one of the reasons I've worked through my arachnophobia and am at the point where spiders are fine to live in my house wherever they like, other than the bedroom. The bedroom is off-limits. 😆 I'm in Alaska, and we don't have black widows or brown recluse, other than the odd one that might get shipped up in a container. We have a "spider expert" (Keith) who lives in Anchorage and will happily take any of those off people's hands, thereby ensuring the survival of the spider until its natural death. It's been many years since a brown recluse found its way here, but I believe he has at least one black widow right now. I love the coffin-shaped cribs! I have two rectangular cribs right now, in case a spider over-winters in the house like last year (a hacklemesh weaver I kept for 6 months before releasing after his spring molt, when the weather warmed up). If they're indoors after the cold really sets in, there's concern (at least on my part) that the spider isn't acclimatized to the outside chill enough to survive the winter outdoors. So I plan to keep any I find. Hopefully not more than two or I'll have to buy more enclosures! Either that, or I'll just let them go where they like in the house. I have a shy girl (?) near my burglar alarm who has lived there for a couple months now.

I’ve been bitten twice by black widows. The bites were both a little crazy, but I’m still fine! I was put on antibiotics for over a month each, and just had to keep the bites clean. I still have a bruised area from one that’s very light now, but it took a long time to heal. I was nauseous and had headaches for a few weeks, but that went away. Moral of the story? If they do bite you, more than likely you’ll be fine. One of them bit me while I was in bed. Spiders are everywhere. Lol people are silly. And yes, if you’re a child or sick or elderly, you may have a more severe reaction. More than likely, you’ll be ok! Also, I’m in Utah, from Vegas. We have these everywhere! They’re so misunderstood. I was visiting Illinois and was playing with my friend's dogs in the yard and I didn't have any shoes on. I felt a tiny pinch on the top of my foot and looked down and saw what I think was a brown recluse on my foot. I shook my foot and it fell into the grass, so i looked at it and I think it was a brown recluse (but it might not have been). I went inside and washed my foot with soap and water just in case to make sure it didn't get infected or something. The spot where I was bit was a little red for an hour, but it didn't hurt or itch or anything, and the redness was completely gone by that night and I couldn't tell exactly where I was bit anymore. I wish I would have caught the spider so I could see if it really was a brown recluse or not.

My Uncle was bitten by a black widow in the desert of Cali and ended up getting a tat of the widow right over the spot! And he was FINE. My cousin and I use to search for them. I believe they are lovely! The recluse not so much, but your teaching about these spiders is AMAZING! 🤘🏻🖤❤

Super glad I watched this specific video of yours. We lived in SoCal for two years in the middle of the desert and Black Widows were a major pest for us. I remember one summer I found around 12-14 in about two weeks. Of course people were killing them left and right and I let them be. Mind you I have two kids who were 4 and under a year old at the time. They knew to not bother them and they actually laid three clutches in one summer and protected those things with their life. When they went away for the day under the stucco of our house, the clutch went with them. This just proves to my husband that I wasn’t crazy for leaving them be! Thanks again for another informational and educational video!

As a black widow keeper, my favorite is the "but what if there's a flood or an earthquake and your spider jars get crushed or knocked over and the spiders escape?" line. Just ignoring the fact that if such a disaster were to occur that would shake my house that hard, the entire structure would probably have collapsed into a pile of rubble and a dead spider in a jar would be the absolute last thing on my mind (also because I'd probably be dead too 🤣)

These spiders are part of the Eco system. I adore their existence and i say to the people out there We're all living though a pandemic, uncertainty sending out kids to school, hunger, crime I send my daughter outside! Like turn off the news, radio, lights, be free! My little girl will find spiders (OMG YOU LET HERRR HOLD THAT) isopods, earwigs, frogs and moths. Her ability to ask and learn will move mountains! Ive never seen either brown recluse or black widow in Maine. Jealous, but up north Huntsman. Keep on with books and information links. We love you Kat! Sincerely MJ and Ms Elayne

Brown recluse are also more likely to dry bite. Their venom can cause necrosis, but it's very rare and likely exacerbated by bacterial infection. I've been bitten by them a few times, and the worst thing that's ever happened to me is some minor irritation for a few days.

Widows are scary, they like my garage. Also, my first experience with them was probably with the angriest most territorial black widow in existence ever. I was 7 and it was in our garage and it actually did go after my mom when she went in to get to her car, I watched from the doorway a clear as day black window sliding down from the ceiling onto the car. It must have absolutely hated my mom or was infected by some virus. I have not trusted them since. But, good to know they are not normally like that and my experience was isolated to that possibly one widow. It also explains why they just stare at me when I go into my garage and then hide when I start spraying, sorry but I have a dog and two kids, not going to risk a bite. But thank you for explaining their behavior it does help understand them more.

Long time follower, first time poster! I loved this video; I recently moved from Northern California, which is rife with black widows, to Seattle, and I'm super bummed at the lack of widows I see here. I also was told by my father as a child that the brown recluse "is the most dangerous and terrifying spider in the world." Like Uncle Jesse on Full House used to say, "Have mercy!" These are two of my absolute favorite spiders on Earth (next to Ogre-faced and Bolas spiders), and people just need to calm down and stop believing the hype. These are gorgeous and wonderful animals that enrich our environment, unbeknownst to us, every day. Thank you for everything you do, Kat! I especially love Maple, your wolf spider; she's utterly adorable! Make a plushie of her, please!

I have or used to have arachnophobia until I started learning about tarantulas. Now I am in love with them (one reason I like watching your channel) and will be planning on getting maybe four of them in the future (including old worlds). But I draw the line at them. I get it that black widows are friendly but what if you make a mistake, they get scared, run up your arm and bite you?

I can take pics of the dozen or so Black Widows all around our house. Pfffft. They are actually so timid and not really defensive at all. I accidentally opened an outdoor power outlet where a female had not one, not two but THREE egg sacs... and she didn't even bat an eyelash, so-to-speak.

He’s since given me the green light on pet spiders and now we have our first T! He’s even become interested enough to tell me he wouldn’t mind a black widow someday, he thinks they’re cool! He still doesn’t want to touch any spiders, but hey, that’s alright I’ll take it!

🎉We live in East TN and my daughter does as well. Her house was totally filled with brown recluse they lived in the cabinets and under furniture in a tough little web hammock. If you got up at night and went in the kitchen and turn the light on they would sit frozen on the counter top. She called a pest company and he examined the attic and there were bunches of them up there and in all the closets. He told my daughter that the only way to do any thing was to leave the house for a couple of weeks and they could tent the house and set off bombs of spider spray insecticide in the attic and the whole house. There were also lots of black widows in all the windows and under her back deck. She soon moved out of that house and got a brand new double wide up on the job where he worked, totally spider free! I was cleaning closets and boxes and got bit by a brown recluse in the soft part of my thumb and pointer finger.. I had a bad sore get started and had to go to the dr. He said the tissue was necrotic from bacteria that went in when I got bit. It took several weeks to heal up! Now I’m careful when I clean closets or boxes that have been sitting in dark areas. it’s so odd that the brown recluse don’t catch their prey in a web, they hunt them chase them down and eat them!

I had a black widow for almost 2 years. Every time I had to open the cage to feed her or whatever, she would immediately run and hide in a corner of the cage. Yeah super scary. I would love to get a brown recluse one day, but they aren't in my area, however I caught a giant house spider in my bathroom that I decided to keep.

Some spiders didn't enter your home it's been there home since birth and the only environment it knows. I used to put house spiders outdoors, but found them dead the next day so now jusr let them roam around inside and never had any issues. There are some that accidentally wander in though that won't survive indoors also depending on the species

Speaking of children.... I have a four year old. We basically live outside and he can identify more plants, animals, fish, bugs than a kid twice his age. We are now working on spiders. We have a ton of jumpers around our home and I have three as pets. One of them currently has babies. It's been a great learning experience for him. We also have brown recluses around. I've found four or five outside and three inside. It makes it all the more important for him to be able to identify them and he does really good. He found the last one that we found in the house on his window sill. He came and got me and even told me what it was on our way back to his room. He knows not to touch ANY spider unless he shows me or his dad first. So far his favorites are the jumpers and rabid wolf spiders. He calls them "rabbit" wolf spiders 😂

I've relocated Brown Recluses before (had a positive ID on them thanks to your many wonderfully helpful videos on them so I knew they weren't Wolf Spiders or Cellar Spiders) and the thing that scares me about them is their ability to teleport when they want to, not their venom even though I DO have a healthy amount of respect for that as well. Also, I love how adorably messy Black Widow webs are and how every one I've ever encountered that I've gently used a stick on to chase them into a safef hiding place to keep them from getting sprayed on sight just for existing have dropped down and played dead instead of being aggressive like the people around me swore up and down they were. I have a serious soft spot for the misunderstood creatures and a love for true facts over fear mongering and misinformation. 💙💙

I miss my 8 legged danger babies. i decided it was best for them to be rehomed and started keeping regal jumping spiders cause my 3 year old has a love of creepy crawlies like i do. Especially his jumping spider we found that he named spidey ❤ patiently waiting for me and my old man to agree they are both old enough for me to have the more venomous spiders i love again🥰

Hi Kat, I really appreciate your channel, you helped me a lot with my arachnophobia. I adopted an Eresus and I love her. Would you be interested in talking about Tegeneria spiders ?
