A lot has been said about the quality of drinking water in Florida. Although it is safe to drink, some want a filtration system. In this video Jerry and Linda replace the filter cartridges in their Nova system. The filters need to be replaced about every 26,000 gallons used and for the newcomers this took about a year. Come along and learn about water filters in The Villages.
The channel is more than just The Villages. It features episodes designed to inspire retirees to make the most of their golden years. Kayaking, hiking, golfing, music, travel and more is featured.

I think I would get the system but pay them to maintain it just so I can sit and watch the technician and regale him with "back in my day stories" like, "we didn't have water...we had to lick the dew from leaves in the morning...while fighting off the thirsty black pumas"... and then tell him how kids today are soft... LOL. Of course, I'd slip him a twenty, tell him to pull up his pants and see you next year... God, I can't wait to retire! It's going to be awesome. :-)

When we had our house build in west Texas, we purchased an RO water system that had 5 smaller filters....we had very bad tasting water in west Texas, but the system worked great! First time we changed the filters, we were taken aback by the colors...they ranged from chocolate milk to malted milk to an ecru...that filtration system was a game changer. It even took away the smell of the water. Good investment, those RO systems. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

Realizing hindsight is 20/20, it would have been nice to have the filters installed a little higher to allow room for your 5 gallon bucket to easily fit under the filter tubes. That system looks like a good one. I enjoy your videos for their content and length. Keep em coming.

Great video and Mailbag Monday is must watch TV each week. You guys look great in 75 inch glory! Thank you so much for making your videos. I have a system like this in my northern home and find that the O-rings become Oval-Rings after while and need to replace them from time to time. Good idea to have a few extra available before starting this project. Also, Amazon sells a metal wrench with a slightly longer handle that makes this change slightly easier. Paying someone $40 to change the filters is certainly reasonable.

I am about to get one of these installed. We see sediment around faucets and water spots. A neighbor installed it and said no more sediment, tastes better and white clothes come out whiter. Also should help prevent the sediment we got in our dishwasher. I am an engineer and looked at their website. The system looks good and is very reasonable compared to other much more expensive options. I did notice that you installed the filter marked 5 (microns) first and the 10 (microns) second. Even though your words were correct, the filters were marked so you put the 5 micron first. You may want to switch them.

I visit Florida frequently in my diesel pusher motor home. My incoming water passes thru a 2 canister filter system. The 1st filter is 1 micron sediment filter. The 2nd filter is ½ micron carbon filter. Not sure what good 10 micron & 5 micron filters do? Maybe the reason they were so clean is that all the sediment passes thru your filters? But the more important concern in Florida is water hardness, not sediment. Get some water hardness test strips & you'll see what I mean. (It is very hard) The ideal system has your inside water passing thru filters (to keep the softener resin clean), then thru a softener. This is good for everything but drinking. Then use a Berkey to filter your drinking water. Don't do anything to your outside water. Good luck and thanks for the videos.

I have live here in Florida for 27 years, the water here is hard not liked the water in New Hampshire, Florida water need water softener and water filters especially if you have Ice maker. But not everyone can afford to have in the home cuz having softener is kinda expensive and you probably need 3 bags to last a few months defence of how much water do you used. But i think water softener and water filter is essentials here in Florida, and make your appliances last a little longer in my experience.

Jerry & Linda, Did you buy the filters as a three pack, and how do you know which filters go where. I would strongly suggest you use a silicone grease for the gasket instead of olive oil. I had a system like this. I noticed there is not a water bypass for the unit altogether. If something fails in the unit you will have no water because your only option is to cut off the water to your entire house. I had a connection fail and needed to bypass the entire unit.

@@JERRYANDLINDA I think you need smaller micron filtration ratings on those filters. Instead of 10 and 5 microns, I would go with 5 and 1 microns.

Does it soften the water at all? Do you notice any difference in cleaning capability -- dishes, clothes, showering, etc.? In factoring savings I always think one should include their time, because that's worth something, too. I would say your time was worth $40, but if it's how you want to spend your time that's your choice. of course. :-)

Hi Linda and Jerry. Did you purchase your Nova water filter system after you bought your house or did you have it installed before you moved in? Is Nova the name of the company that sells these filters? Would you share the name/phone of company you used?

Love living in Florida.......but the tap water leaves a lot to be desired. I have been buying bottled water for years. When all you drink is water; you have to enjoy it. Filtration system is great investment. I didn't read any comments, but curious, why not just use your fridge water? I suppose your system is providing for the entire house? Sorry, I was limited on time and had to cut your video.

Where did you purchase filters? PN? Amazon link maybe?

We actually tried to look at doing that, but was not feasible since we had to buy in bulk. We will talk a little bit about Nova filters on the January 22 show. We have the company come back and change them when it's time, usually once per year.

@@JERRYANDLINDA I had them come do the Filter change after one of my canisters split and started leaking. I installed a By-Pass valve. They replaced the canister and installed new filters (Qty=3) they check o-rings cleaned and lubricated them… $165 for everything. Fast and Easy. I would recommend them anytime.

The Tech was very thorough and polite. He even said they are Pentaire filters and Nova just has special systems built for them. He liked my By-Pass Valve setup. You can definitely taste/smell the difference when the filters are by-passed though… filters are worth it

Is it worth doing it yourself? NO (in my opinion) - if you ruin that O ring.. where are you going to find one quickly? (water is off until you find it) love the video! FYI after you shut the water and the pressure is released if it is difficult to turn the filter housing - press the red buttons on top to release more air pressure.

I know how filters work. if there's a lot of dirt coming through your water it will show on the filters. of course it won't show the microscopic organisms, but it will show sludge. I was happy not to see any large particulates in the filters.

THE VILLAGES FLORIDA NEWCOMERS vaseline has been used for rubber gaskets for the past 70 years in the AQUATIC Hobby. Some of the largest canister filter companies like Eheim , made in Germany, only recommend and use Vaseline for the rubber gaskets. I’ve had rubber gaskets last longer than 20 years using Vaseline.
