I believe that year on year police stats show that only about 6% of accidents are caused by unlawful speeding or that speeding over the speed limit was a contributory factor but by far a higher majority of accidents are cause by vehicles that are being driven or riden at speeds that are inappropriate at the time of the incident and not necessarily over the speed limit of that road. The vast majority of all accidents are at junctions and roundabouts, [ smidsys and tailgating] usually around towns and all usually under the speed limits and then in the country on bends [ going to fast or not allowing sufficient time and distance to slow in] or on inappropriate overtakes into oncoming danger. So a speed limiter would have little or no effect on the vast majority of collision, incidents, accidents, injuries or deaths.

Will it act on the shown speed limit or take into acount the Police allowance of a speed plus 10% plus 2 mph so at 30 mph one could drive at 35 mph without fear of prosecution [ at the police officers descretion of course] but does that apply to speed a cameras as well. Are we going to get any inbuilt speed allowance. I hope n allowance is made because these higher allowancedspeeds of up to 79 mph on motorways are allowing some drivers to get away with anti social speeding and to speed with impunity. Something that makes the roads more dangerous. Its a boiut time tyhe police took off this allowance and let us use the speedometers. So what if one is doing 28 mph instead of 30 mph its safer than idiots doing 35 mph.

From what I have seen the driver can turn on or off this mechanism and when turned on the car reads the speed limits and then obeys them to the degree that if one wants to travel faster than say the limit of 30 mph one has to turn the sensors off and then one can drive the vehicle at any speed one wants. So its all up to the machine once its switched on and untill switched off the speed limit t cannot be exceeded.

Yes as I said in my original article ACPO [Police] now the NPCC had set an allowance above whatever the speed limit was in force for any particular road. That said they do also say that it is at the discretion of the police oficer at the time and neither did they mention whether the GATSO or other speeding devices like the ASC or Average Speed Cameras made such an allowance. This then makes the whole thing a mockery as it can and does encourage some drivers to actually speed whereas some drivers will just drive by their speedometers. As a by the by it is understood that most speedometers are designed to give a false reading. A reading that is actually faster than the road speed obtained and so as I said if a speedometer reads 30 mph one might be doing say only 27/28 mph. So one could argue that if one is doing the ACPO speed of say 35 mph one might only be doing only just over 30mph and not breaking the law. That may be true but for BMW drivers who would truthfully be doing 35 mph and thus may be reported for speeding at that speed but again in the mistaken belief that they are not speeeding at all. Believe it or not their speedometers have been found to be actually correct and perhaps thats why BMW drivers seem to be always going faster than other vehicles and catching one up. Thats because in truth you may only be driving at 27mph believing yourself to be doing 30 mph but the BMW is doing 30 mph so 3 mph faster than you. Thats why he is catching you up.

So it can be turned on and off or indeed overriden if one wants to overtake and presumably one will exceed the speed limit for that road. What a useless waste of time monies and effort. The only saving grace is that in urban areas where there are traffic cameras a potential speeder can supposedly rely on the speed limiter and not bother looking down at the speedometer and therefore one is not taking ones eyes off the road. Or maybe be one can be able to look around a bit more and still take ones eyes off the matter in hand, that being the road. Does it also keep safe following on distance to the vehicle in front... no I dont think so and will it actually stop if there is an emergency in front... no again I dont think so So as a road safety devise its worse than useless and a waste of time monies and consideration. What it might do is stop bad drivers from being caught at speeds in excess of the set limit but it all depends on the driver and what limit is set and when or whether that limit is switched off or overridden .As such its a boondoggle and that is something that is absolutely a waste of time, monies and effort but is politically pursued by the authorities.

What a stupid device! A qualified driver should NOT be on the road if he or she cannot properly control their own speed. This device just eliminates the simple skill of throttle control.

Qasim Mir and the driver has to fiddle about. Eyes off the road and one hand off the steering wheel to set it.
