In the years before my mother's death, I would call her on Saturday night when Keeping Up Appearances reruns were on, and we would sit there, me at my house and her at her house, and "watch" the show together on the phone. That brought so much joy to my mom, and I will never forget how we laughed and laughed together. I just love that show. It never gets old.

My Dad enjoyed this so much, along with "Are You Being Served". He would slap one leg & burst out laughing. My Mother was just the opposite, as she would leave the room, go to the bedroom & shut the door. My Dad passed away on October 26, 2004 & my Mother is still living at age 96.

As an Aussie, I absolutely loved 90s British^ and Irish^ sitcoms like this, _Father Ted_ , _The Vicar of Dibley_ and _Absolutely Fabulous_ . I'm sure there were plenty of others that either slip my mind or I just wasn't exposed to, but these shows were my education to the "old country" to which I have still never been, from the other side of the world. The British and Irish easily do the best English-language TV comedy. ^Yes, I know there is a huge difference between Britain and Ireland, but I group them together in the same way that you might group Australia and New Zealand together.

I discovered this show totally by accident a little less than 20 years ago and have watched it on and off for that long. This show rates right up there with 'All In The Family' in terms of hilarity. Like Archie's character the rest of the cast play off of Hyacinth's character in similar fashion and it works like a charm. She is a right handful and a scream. RIP Geoffrey Hughes, Mary Millar and Clive Swift.

I love how Patricia Routledge never really breaks character. XD
@wilsjane4 жыл бұрын
That is because she is playing her natural character, the genius of Roy Clarke, who used the same approach in all of his series. Cathy Staff (Nora Batty) is another example. Although Patricia is 91, she is still working today. Her partner is Betty Boothroyd (Speaker of the house of commons for many years). They are like 2 peas out of the same pod.

Have you ever wondered where Onslow got his hat with FH on it and what FH stood for? Many years ago he went to New Zealand for a fund raising telethon and was given the hat by a local road building company, Fulton Hogan. When he went to audition as Onslow, he wore that hat and the directors liked it. Fulton Hogan replaced it for him every season after that.

+I'LL BE BACK ! The world is going crazy, The definition of racism is making a person feel inferior BECAUSE of the colour of their skin. It is as simple as that, but the nanny state society seems to have lost the plot. I remember the scene in one of John Sullivan's series, where the black guy insisted that he was born in Kingston. The funny part was when he whispered to his friend, "Kingston in Jamaica". No one saw it as racist and it was not. I have worked with people from all over the world and I always enjoyed chatting about their origins and customs. Far from being offended, they loved chatting about things that they felt that other people were ignoring about them and many of them became lifelong friends. I can't imagine being offended if I was visiting India and someone accused me of being English. I would probably just tell them that drinking all their tea should have dyed my skin by now. LOL.

@@wilsjane Roy Clarke is still alive according to Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Clarke
@wilsjane4 жыл бұрын
+Shane Collis. It is with great pleasure that I have just discovered that I was wrongly informed by BAFTA, It was a different Roy Clark (without the e) who died on 15 November 2018. With Roy being 88, I did not question the sad news at the time Something similar happened some years ago when news spread all over the US that Richard Attenborough was dead, In fact it was his brother 'Jonathon' who had died. Since few people knew the third brother and David was alive, people wrongly assumed that Richard had died. It was a strange irony, since Richard had a phobia about sending a Christmas card to someone who had died. Every year, his entire office had to make an excuse to call hundreds of people before they licked the stamp. Back to Roy. Did you know that he lives in the area where Last of the summer wine was set and his Home is still in the same area. His story-lines on the police were based on his younger life experiences as the village 'Bobby' and some of his real life stories were even funnier than his scripts. In fact, almost all of his characters are broadly based on people he knew in the village when he was a child.
