I've bred discus for nearly 30 years and you've done everything right. What I will say is this, if I were about to start up a discus breeding setup, I wouldn't buy an adult pair. I've done it many times with 50% success and the other 50% didn't work (egg eaters, male dominance, fry issues due inbreeding, hormone issues etc) . Very few people sell fantastic pairs that are banging out the fry. They'd rather keep them and make money of them. I'd personally start with 6/8, 4 inch discus and raise them on good water (not RO which is mineral depleted) and you'll get 2 pairs in 6 months for sure. Don't breed them until they reach 6 inch otherwise the female will become stunted. The bigger the body, the move food for the fry. Then you remove and put them in RO. 50 TDs. High temperature, the rest you know. You'll find these will be so easy to breed if you form your own pairs. In summary you've done nothing wrong other than probably buying adults that may have been creating the same problems for the previous owner. My only other thing is your black edging on the tank. The fry will attract to it and that causes a problem for the parents. The other tip is lower the water to 50% to help the fry attach to the parents. Good luck.

When people say use RO are they only using RO then remineralise or using an RO tapwater mix. I did a topup with RO to a tank with HMA and got a sucessful spawn and we are at free swimming stage now. There is so much conflicting info. Also, I am looking to put HMA back into grow out tank to get the fry used to tapwater like parents.

Hey Nick, I'm not a discus pro but have some success in past breeding them... Here's what helped me 1. Weekly water changes is best about 50% not daily unless its on an automatic overflow etc. 2. Feeding frozen hikari bloodworms and live foods help tremendously. 3. Breeding Tank dimensions should be 18x18x18 inches or 24x18x18 inches maximum. 4. I used blue coverage on all sides except front. 5. Once every 3 months i deworm them.. This also helped if they were not laying eggs regularly as mine laid eggs just as often as angels.. 6. Add some Indian almond leaves in tank. 7. Keep them on the normal daylight and night cycle. Don't use any nightlight if they have any eggs.. it can stress them more. 8. Keep constant temperature in 30s is better... Best of luck Cheers mate

So 30s temperature is ok for breeding? Do you use light blue or a deeper blue tank side coverage?

@@tait8900 I keep it between 28 to 30 for breeding. For raising fry after 1 month and weaned from parents approx 30 to 32.. It the same blue color as seen on the Brilliant blue turquoise used as back ground...

Is it worthwhile feeding live foods if you have to de-worm every 3 months?

@@boddiesbuddy1380 Everyone's method is different. I'm just sharing what worked for me.. I even deworm them even if fed only commercial fish foods as a preventative. I've found that it beneficial from my experiences...

I was watching a video the other day from an experienced discus breeder, he does not do water changes when they have eggs because he believes the new water makes them want to spawn again.

I have free swimmers and not done water changes so as not to disturb them and they have spawned again today with babies still feeding off parents. The eggs dont look fertilised this time round though.

Very keen to see this discus breeding endeavor. Love hearing an Aussie voice in the scene . Keep the discus at 29/30 For breeding for sure but bump it down once they’ve laid eggs . Pro tip! It seems to help

mine have finally laid and raised the fry on their own, about 4 attempts prior they kept eating them, this time they have all attached to the parents. I attempted to artificially raise 3 batches but lost them all. while i was attempting to raise the last batch (they lasted a week) they laid so i let them have a go. Bang, 10th time success. :-) Happy Like you said in your Business plan video 1 of the key points is PATIENCE :-)

Hey mate, when I used to breed discus I had the exact same problem, I got given some advice that solved the problem for me and that was to increase the protein in their diet. So I started feeding them minced beef heart. you can buy the hearts from the butchers very cheap and also buy a cheap mincer. I also used to freeze it in very small cubes and feed twice a day. it does make the water very dirty but it solved my problem.

I have managed to get to free swimming stage with my pair. I think I have an Alenquer and Santarem (they look very similar). Not sure what fry these will produce until older what are your thoughts, anyone had this combo? Will your remineralise RO water or mix RO with tap?

Sell and post me your discus and I will try and breed them for you 😂 I currently have a pair in a 2 foot tank, white all way round except the front. Temp is at 30 just filtered water not RO. I have one but need to set up a water change system to make it easier to use. The pair I have are notorious for eating their eggs so I’m artificially raising the fry from two batches of eggs now. As I type they are cleaning the cone again ready to lay. I keep a very dim light on all the tome and try not to go near the tank unless I absolutely have to, hard as I have them in my lounge next to my 7ft. Keep going as they will eventually do the right thing for you Love the videos

Awesome to see the perseverance but I thought the discus were going into 3fts. My mate just got a breeding pair for $30 because the guy didn't want to deal with the eggs and the fish. I know it might not work but maybe you could add another white pip(attached to a tile - not the tank) and maybe artificially rase. I know it ain't for the money but they are taking your money so raising one good spawn would be fine. A small youtube called Urban Fish Keeper had success doing this. Sorry for always righting the longest comments. Just trying to get involved. I dream about what you have(aswell as Justin.) have a good one. Sorry again

I learned from Cory "Aquarium co-op" that Discus breeding tanks sides should be lighter in color making the parents the darkest body of the tank because, when the fries hatch they go to the darker body of the tank thinking they are their parents - I've noticed this in your previous Discus breeding video the fry stuck to the corners of the tank and away from their parents which is not good. I just want to let you know 😊 ref video:- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9ibjZmJlZqYZ3k.html&ab_channel=AquariumCo-Op
