This is above 12 inch so no longer a true bookshelf. Under 12 inch, it could have been a competitor for LS50. At 2K USD, you will have to cross shop agains other bigger counterparts like R3 where this is going to loose both in the look and sound department. The 'bracing' inside kinda reminds me of Bose waveguide which lends a horn like effect to the sound which is good for acoustic heavy music.

I had a pair of speakers that were very similar, about 15 to 20 years ago using the Jordan JX92S 4 inch full range driver. They were made by Ronnie Thackerey who had a small company called Carolina Audio. The bookshelf model looked a lot like this one with a folded transmission line and there was a floor standing as well. They had a lot of the characteristics that you talk about with the amazing sound stage and clarity. To me they sounded like a pair of Quad electrostatics but with better dynamics, sound staging and, bass. The driver's on these ones look amazing and I hope I get a chance to hear them someday.

What I did to solve the lazar problem on the highs with FR drivers: I mounded the FR driver at a 30 degree angle on top of the box. Built a cover with a wood top and black mesh sides (with an omny deflector cone inside). I plan to make a few like that. They are semi omni, just a bit brighter in front but no lazar stuff, just gentle pregressive roll off in the highs as you increase angle. But even from 90 degrees it's still only 10% less highs. Easy to still enjoy. And as you walk around the room there is barely much difference in highs. It's not for the faint hearted but if you are handy with wood, it's about the only real solution to the super directional highs. Better than any conventional speaker for highs spread!

Something for me to consider. I'm currently shopping for a whole new system. SS or Tube, mono or stereo, integrated or stand alone, bookshelf's or floor? Decisions decisions, but the information gathering is actually a nice voyage. Too many times in the past I've bought on impulse and regretted it. This time around I'm aiming for high-end but simple and not ultra expensive. I want to get great value for my money. These speakers are interesting and with a quality sub might be the ticket with something like a Zen TORII JR.

Nice review as always. Better is in the eye of the beholder... but I will agree they sound different than the KEF's. @@jonathanreich6360 These reviews (reviews from others as well) I feel "really" appeal to those who love analyzing "the equipment side", followed then by those who might be looking to buy (which can be helpful in their decision). At 72 years old I've "finally" realized that the "grass is typically not greener on the other side", and from a cost basis standpoint, "apples to apples" chasing equipment often just provides a different, equally good change Horizontal, but not a big change Virtically. Bottom line, if you are happy with your system, save your money and enjoy the MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent video, mate! I ditched my LS50 Metas after hearing a demo of the Adam Audio A7V powered studio monitors. With the A7V, I pick up details in music I never knew were there. Imaging is outstanding, too. Sometimes, it seems I hear voices, footsteps, gunfire, etc. behind me while gaming. I use an SVS 3000 Micro to fill out the lower end to make an outstanding nearfield system. Don't get me wrong, I liked my Metas, but the A7V are just a cut above.

I've had the original A7X for years - great monitors! I agree, It's definitely the most revealing "speaker" I've ever heard -- perfect for audio work and production -- and the best system I have for EDM style music. I find it a bit too harsh and fatiguing for long listening sessions though... I prefer the smooth holographic sound of my KEF q150 - and hopefully soon, the R3 Meta. I can't get enough of my Kefs. My Micro 3000 sub is due to arrive tomorrow actually :) I might have to try the Adams with it. Maybe some highpass and subtle EQ + sub could increase my tolerance for them. I usually only use em for sound design/production but it's worth a shot.

I believe the midrange clarity of a transmission line speaker - is partly due to the low(er) back pressure inside the cabinet. Since it is open, the driver is, I think, able to be more like an open baffle speaker.
@Jayiyagi
@Jayiyagi Жыл бұрын
sure but unfortunately open baffle with a 4 inch driver like this would be too compromised in bass performance for my liking haha
@NeilBlanchard
@NeilBlanchard Жыл бұрын
@@Jayiyagi - right - a transmission line is the best bass solution, in my opinion. Because a TL gets so much bass out of a given driver, the quality of the bass is better - the lower mass of the driver, and the control of the TL, end up having (much?) lower distortion bass. *And* you get the excellent midrange from it.

Hi Neil, I understand you are professional designer I think your work was promoted on Sonora Design YT channel. What do you think of the narrow throat at the bottom end of that TL tube? I favour an ever widening tapered TL with more of a horn at the outlet? A la Voigt pipe. In my view they will muffle the backwave. Also the lack of taper promotes a limited range of frequency of the backwave.

I build speakers with single driver and coaxial drivers (that I built up from separate drivers). My 3" FR drivers go high and yet are fairly warm. You can even listen to them completely open, out of the box. And even easily make out the kick, over the music. A "puck". But in my built speakers I actually mount the FR driver half out of the box (with an acoustic speaker hole). So you also hear the music from the back of the driver (while the box still warms up the sound). Sometimes I hear someone in my room talking and I turn around in fright (it was the speakers). Once I heared a jet go past "overhead" and I looked out the window with excitement (a half a meter from my speakers). It took a few seconds of looking out the window before I realised it was a KZfaq video.

It’s a tough question because these speakers are subjectively very different. OGY are very analytical and light on bass. They’re perfect for soft acoustic music with vocals. The KLH should sound warmer with bigger bass. The KLH are better for rock music and parties. I imagine that a lot of people would like the KLH more on bass alone. That’s like the #1 criteria for regular people. And the OGY expose bad recordings instantly because they’re so infuriatingly transparent.

 pretty hard choice. Depends on what you want. Arendal 1723 thx is going to give you a fullrange-ish response right off the bat without a sub. More impactful air movement and mid bass punch. Highs are going up to be sparkly but not as forward or distinctive as the OGY but it will be a more warmer meatier type of midrange in comparison. OGY is going to give you more pin point accuracy in imaging and wider/deeper soundstage. Very clear sounding like a panel speaker. Bass is going to be a lot more dependent on what sub you go with and how you set it up

Very cool speakers. Kinda where im headed in terms of designs. I feel like they float the image in a beutiful way with these designs. Im going with a aperiodic transmision line design and a 8" drive with supertweeters. Should yeild a low 30's -30 frequency response. Ive had my eye on this company for a while too.

Besides the look, what is the advantage of these co km pared to a Kali IN-8 and woofer setup for even less money? More SPL, extension is both directions, more advanced port end, no worries about subtractive crossovers. Sensitivity doesn't make anything more dynamic, and power is cheap... Plus most music only has 15dB of dynamic range on average anyhow.

Maximum respect for anyone's opinion in Naples they say "Ogni Scarrafone e bello a Mamma Suia". The BBC3/5 in the various versions produced have been on the market for many years and evidently their sound has become tired, but it seems to me that we are returning to the phonovalige . ... moreover there are beautiful versions of the Diatone and Goto one-way in Japan that no one is looking for, but they are much better ............ although personally I can't stand them for more than 10 minutes ..... If I want to hear with a one-way I use a dipole with Altec 420 driven with a single ended 845 and so much for your shoeboxes

Focal does not use Crossovers, each driver is build specifically for their own tonality.

I am not sure why they told you that at the factory. But from my understanding, the Focal Utopia 3 used OPC crossover where you can adjust the different frequencies to the room acoustics. It should be in your manual for the Focal Utopia 3. Unless we are talking about two different speakers, I am pretty sure...

Adding a sub-woofer rubbishes the transmission line principle of the design. If a sub-woofer is necessary Ogy might as well house the same driver in a smaller cabinet such as the Neat Iota.

@Jayiyagi, you should try a Bose 901 Series VI (the made in Canada versions) paired with modern audiophile electronics. Incredible bass from the 14” equivalent surface area and benefit of crossoverless design, albeit with the outboard EQ. Main problem was that Bose always sold these with poor electronics or in showrooms with poor placement. The Canadian ones seem to be the best (there are made in USA and made in Mexico vintages of the Series 6)

Crossovers do not shape the tone of a speaker/driver. The only thing a corssover can do is limit what frequencys are allowed to pass to each driver in a multi-driver system. The tone of a speaker is determined by it's design and the baffle it is installed in.

Thumbs up and shout out to team full range! I built the Pensil 7ms DIY speakers recently (ms=mono suspension, special driver technology now copied by B&W). Was only GBP 200 for drivers and CNC cut wood. I have the same super deep and wide soundstage. Only one problem occurs with one Santana live recording where the very left congas on the track always play in my neighbour's living room (so wide & spacious is the soundstage). He can get quite annoyed at times about that...

If they are small and only one driver and no crossover parts why are they still $2000? Should be around $500-600 range ;)
@Jayiyagi
@Jayiyagi Жыл бұрын
$500-600 using these drivers and cabinet construction will get them bankrupt, can't even get to the price your asking even for DIY projects unless you go with a much lesser single driver. Drivers are EMS LB5 and costs that much on their own. The transmission cabinet in birch plywood aside from R&D cost makes the price pretty reasonable.

@@leo11877 $400 is a pretty expensive driver. Building a transmission line cabinet that would work well with this driver took the company 3 years according to them, many iterations. Again, anyone is welcome to just buy the driver (they sell just the driver as well) and try to diy for less but this is a product where that work has been done for you. Price justification is always a challenge for products like this since all people see is a single driver thrown into a small cabinet.
