We start from #Fiscardo, a picturesque port in Kefalonia, exploring the top #attractions of the northern part of the island. At the end of the video you will find detailed #maps.
Of the approximate 365 #villages on this large and diverse island, Fiscardo remains unique; it is the only village on Kefalonia that has so many of the original #Venetian buildings. A #walking #tour in the alleys and #promenade transfers you automatically back in time, during the era of the Most #Serene #Republic of #Venice, that used to control big part of the #coastal eastern Mediterranean.
It has 190 permanent residents and lies at the northernmost tip of Kefalonia, some 50 km north of #Argostoli and the #airport and 38 km from #Sami port. Fiskardo has a small #fishing fleet supplying the area with fresh fish, while during the summer months numerous #luxury #yachts and sailing #boats find shelter here.
Fiskardo and the dense forest in the surrounding area have been declared areas of great natural beauty and are protected under Greek law. The magic shades of the green trees that reach the shining blue waters will steal your heart.
Fiskardo has been identified with the ancient town #Panormos, mentioned by the Greek historian #Herodotus. A well-preserved #theatre, #baths complex, Casa #Romana and the cemetery with a perfectly preserved Roman-era grave filled with gold jewellery, glass artefacts, clay pots, among others, have been unearthed locally. During the 11th century a.D., period of #Norman dominion in Greece, the village was renamed Fiskardo after Robert #Guiscard, Duke of #Apulia and #Calabria and founder of the #Kingdom of #Sicily, who died at the #Atheras beach in the year 1085. Discover the Venetian #lighthouse across the port and the nearby ruins of a #paleochristian #basilica.
The Venetians and #English used to occupy Fiscardo, marking this area. In recent years a small tourist industry has developed, centred on luxury villas in the area around the village. Et voila: English and #Italians are among the top #visitors by nationality.
